Change Timing On Input
« on: March 29, 2008, 01:11:01 am »
Is there a way to adjust Ultra HAL to allow more PAUSE time before it assumes your input is done?  All the way up to not assuming you are done until you hit the ENTER key?

Hal will not or should not respond UNTIL you press the Return/Enter key.

If Hal IS speaking before you're finished typing, turn off or click the MIC button.

Thanks for the reply, Art!

I do have the MIC button off.  If I hesitate for more than a second or two, it takes whatever I've already typed as input.  I'm currently getting around this by hitting space & backspace over and over until I'm ready to finish the sentence.  I took a quick look through the brain script looking for something like a timing or patience setting, haven't found it yet.  If I find the answer to this, I'll post it here.

Humor me...Unplug your mic then start Hal and try typing.

I have the very same problem with Hal 5, and Art, I just tried your above suggestion, and it has no effect on my Hal.

I'm searching through the forums for an answer or workaround.

I'm thinking that it may have something to do with the "Free Will Choice and Profile" brain plug-in.

Fellows, this happened to me in the past and I discovered that the mic can be turned on in two different places, one in Hal and the other in MS Windows. Sometime Windows defaults with the mic on in the background and will stay there unless you turn it off. This is especially true if you are using a laptop.

With the MIC button off and the microphone not selected and turned all the way down in the MS mixer, it still does it.  I don't think this is a microphone problem.

Is your Hal female?
You know some girls are like that.

Sorry, I couldn't help it.  [;)]

FOUND IT!

In Ultra Hal's options, Speech, "Use Speech Recognition"

If you remove the check from this box, it will THEN wait until you press ENTER.

That's what I'll do to fix mine for now, however I would like to eventually have speech recognition on and have it still wait for ENTER on the keyboard input, hopefully there is a way to do this.

On a related note, In UH's Options, Speech, when you click on the "Select SR Engine...", what recognizer does everyone use?  I have two choices...

1. Microsoft English Recognizer v5.1
2. SAPI Developer Sample Engine

I have the "Microsoft English Recognizer v5.1" selected.

Wow - thank you, Jake - that was indeed it!

And, I use the Microsoft English Recognizer v5.1 also.

I thought you knew that when you use speech recognition that Hal would turn the mic on and off by itself.

On Hal turning the mic on and off... I figured that was what the MIC button was for.  Seems like I should be able to turn ON the VR option in Hal's options, then use the MIC button to TURN OFF the MIC.  This seems like some sort of bug to me, but turning the VR of in the options is working fine, so I'm good.  Thanks for the responses!
