General Discussion / Handheld Hal
« on: February 12, 2011, 04:17:00 pm »
I have a Linux based handheld and was wondering if anyone knows if there has been any effort to create a mobile version of the program? The device I have is called a Caanoo. There are several other devices also in the handheld realm. I use it mainly for running emulators to play old school games but running Ultra Hal on it would be freaking awesome. Here are the specs on the device. If anyone thinks this is possible, kick it around for me.

SoC (System on a Chip): MagicEyes Pollux VR3520F
CPU: ARM926EJ 533 MHz embedded on SoC (architecture version ARMv5TEJ)
GPU: 3D hardware engine embedded on SoC (OpenGL ES 1.1 support)
3D performance: 133M Texel/s and 1,33M Polygon/s
main RAM: 128 Mbytes DDR SDRAM 133 MHz (peak memory bandwidth: 533 Mbytes/s)
video buffer: about 16 Mbytes of main RAM are reserved for the video/texture information
Operating System: GNU/Linux based
Flash memory: None (128 Mbytes reserved to the OS)
Connection to PC: USB 2.0 High Speed through EXT Port
USB Host: USB 1.1 standard socket
Supports SD / SDHC memory cards (up to 32 Gigabytes)
G-Sensor/Vibration Motor
High precision analog stick

General Discussion / Ogre killed Hal?
« on: November 12, 2010, 10:23:32 pm »
Hi guys. I have to say that I think that announcing that the program will be switching over to the Ogre engine and then leaving things in limbo has been nothing short of disasterous to the program and it's related community. Many artists put their creativity on hold in hopes that we would be able to pick up on the new engine and begin making characters and GUI skins for it under the new format. That was what seems like years ago. We haven't even had an update for the existing Haptek version in ages.

I think it would have been wiser to wait until things were fully ready on the Ogre engine before announcing what sounded like to many as it being a waste of time to keep creating things for the outdated Haptek version. I'm thinking the lack of support this program is getting is kinda ****ty and I would have made an effort to keep making characters had I known the Ogre thing was going to take so long. I even offered my character making skills to help the new gig get moving along with no response.

General Discussion / Updates?
« on: August 03, 2010, 10:03:39 am »
Anybody know if this program will ever be updated? This thing has Windows 95 written all over it. Plugins are a real hoot but most people got into this because of the graphic representation. That is also why most people have left this program behind. Remember pages of new characters? That was fun. A script that makes Hal behave like someone else wants it to, not so much. If you don't think that graphics play that much of a role with Hal, then write some code that calculates how many people left this scene behind because of it.

Hal used to be fun. Characters being made. Skins being released. But then...Haptek staying in the mid 90's, an Ogre engine that was about 4 years ago and never really came through. Now toss in chasing away all the artists and you have yourself alot of plug-ins on a flat line program. Anyway, Hal used to be fun.

Hi guys,
Does anybody have the Star Wars GUI skin I made or the car character I made? Can't seem to track them down.

Hi guys. Any word on the Ogre thing? I would really like to see Hal's graphics make it past 1998. Many an artist fell to the side waiting for the Ogre engine. Myself included.

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Alternative Hal Start Up
« on: March 02, 2010, 12:20:08 pm »
Hi Guys,

Here is a start up screen I put together from an online image and a little tweaking. In your Character folder you will see a Jpeg file called HalStart. Move this orginal image to a safe place and replace it with the one I provided and name it HalStart. Now when Hal loads, you should see the new screen. If you don't like it, delete the image I provided and move your orginal HalStart image back to the character folder. I personally like the start up screen that I use alot more than the original which is what inspired me to make it in the first place.

I am working with a 56" screen so you might have to resize the image to match your resolution and screen size. Let me know what you think.

General Discussion / Owl haps for Oog
« on: January 23, 2010, 07:56:11 am »
Hi guys,

Got a request. If anybody is good at making HAPS and has my owl character, could you please make some that work well with him? Out of the available haps, I have found maybe 3 that currently have an effect on him. I think this is due to the way he was made. Most the haps out there are for full body girls. Not so effective on an owl whose body is composed of part of the people putty head and somewhat fixed. If someone can make a set of haps that work well with owl (looking to the left or right and returning to default) or whatever you can come up with, I would be very grateful.

General Discussion / Zork script?
« on: January 20, 2010, 07:06:42 am »
Hi guys,

Question for the script guys. Let's say I have a path that goes from North to South and I have several images in order that represent locations along that trail. Anyway to advance one step forward or backwards in a numbered series of images to represent that? That is, say the word North and it progresses 1 image forward to the "North" or 1 image back if I were to say south? Continuing north would continue to progress through the numbered series of images. South would of course head the other way. Possible?

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Idea for sizing skins
« on: January 19, 2010, 07:42:37 am »
Hi guys,

Was just thinking about things and was wondering if there could be a script that sizes the GUI skin. A script that adds or subtracts a variable universally throughout the elements of the GUI. That is a numeric increase or decrease on the skin, the buttons...I know you can zoom in and out on a skin through the menu but a plus or minus sign on the GUI or the ability to drag the window to size would make things easier for all the different resolutions we view Hal in. Really just wondering if it can be done. Now if it should be done is another story.

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Head Haps
« on: October 18, 2009, 04:56:46 pm »
Hi guys,

Anybody have a good link to some head haps. It seems like most of the haps are for full body. I need some motion haps to work with an owl character. No arms or legs. Thanks

Share Conversations, Experiences, Graphics / Background Changer?
« on: October 02, 2009, 09:49:56 am »
Hi guys,

Anyone know of a plugin that allows the user to change the background, triggered by what is said to Hal? I thought I remembered something like that at one time but not sure if it exists for version 6. It would be cool to have something like "Let's go outside" trigger a matching outside background.

Share Conversations, Experiences, Graphics / New Voice-Oog's review
« on: September 16, 2009, 05:32:39 pm »
Hi guys,

Just purchased a new voice for my owl character. I got Lawrence from Cepstral. It is an English accent voice. I am thoroughly satisfied with the voice and it fits the character perfect. I was using the Paul voice for awhile but it mispronounced my wife's name and really didn't fit the character I was working with. This is not spam. Just letting you guys know that for $30, Lawrence from Cestral is a pretty good buy in my opinion. It fits good with the owl character I use and probably would work with any number of special characters. More importantly for me, it pronounces my wife's name properly.[:)]

General Discussion / Teaching characters
« on: September 09, 2009, 07:16:35 am »
Hi guys,
I am fairly unexperienced when it comes to teaching Hal. I have a character that I want to teach facts I copied from the internet. Could someone explain the best way to teach Hal. I used the Learn from clip board wizard but I don't think I have the full grasp of how it is working. Any tips? I am teaching my owl facts about owls. He also likes playing Dungeons and Dragons and a good pipe but I won't get into that now. Any suggestions on the best way to teach Hal facts and to set up properly what triggers the facts would be greatly appreciated. Also, in the brain editor, you enter a query and then generate a response. I can't seem to alter what his response would be. I have typed it into Hal's response window and the other field below it. It doesn't always give me the option to save. Thanks-Ooglor 7
