Title: VB6 & Haptek - Little experiments
Post by: GT40 on September 08, 2008, 12:39:31 pm

(yes, 24/7 under the influence of Second Life [:D])

Just starting to play with Visual Basic and the Haptek window. Seems interesting for little skits, allowing some new effects, impossible with html/javascript.

A language from the 90's and a dying 3D technology... As always, I'm a naive newbie, at least five years late. Sure that people who program Hal's brain tried that a while ago.

You can download and unzip (anywhere) this following file:

http://gt40.chez-alice.fr/Haptek/Experiments.zip (1.15 MB)

and then just launch "move.exe".

Sorry, for now only one stuff, but 2 or 3 works-in-progress coming soon. Maybe. I hope you have the good DLLs, but don't worry if it doesn't want to work on your PC: it's totally USELESS. [:D]

Great!!

You are on to something, GT40! You may be able to make her do spins and flips with the touch of a button!!

Also, if it was possible to move the buttons below the background, it would be great. It would make a good video of random moves.

Which is another thought, taking all the haps and  making them wrok at random.

Just some thoughts. Not useless, it can be very useful.[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

Thanks a lot, lightspeed and Mark, for testing it. [:)]

Glad it works on your computers. I have 2 old PCs, under XP and 98 and the stuff runs fine on both of them. But I tried it on my son's PC, with Vista, and it doesn't work correctly. If some other people try it, please tell me if you have any problem.

Yes Mark, the buttons can be moved elsewhere outside the background (I just wanted to show it's possible to put objects upon the Haptek window). If you want, I shall do another version for you. The keyboard arrows are faster (if they work, lol). But for now, I'm unable to get the functionalities of Second Life. Every touch on a key is just launching a hap (they are in the folder).

And yes, I guess (no, I hope!) it's not too difficult to launch random haps (just afraid by the number of haps you have, lol). Now, that first stuff is more Haptek than Basic, but I just started little experiments with variable Haptek parameters (x, y, z, t..). Seems to be fun, now looking for an use. [:D]

Just got home and headed straight to Zaba after mail. This looks very interesting and I'll give it a try under vista. I still use your jukebox for entertainment and dreams of making another movie someday. [8D][8D][8D]
Edit - somtime later - zip folder won't open. Kept trying and computer says zip is empty. I'll try again tomorow.
Edit - even later - forced it even harder - internet explorer had an apparent siezure which even task manager couldn't stop, I had to log off. Before I try disabling all protections, would you mind mailing this zip to me through my newest email address at google? It is listed in my little personal section as my new primary address. My old address still works. If you can't get here from there, say so and I will send it to you and you can send as a reply. You come up with some mighty cool new stuffs!

That's great GT.
Been playing with it for the last 3 or so hours.
Put one of my girls in there, she's a little undressed [}:)]

Changed the timing in the haps, I thought she moved a little too quick.
Have not been able to slow down the left to right or right to left
because it will effect the centre to left or right.

Tried changing the ogg & now I have got none.
Never mind, still having fun.

Yes Mark, just tell me if you prefer a version with a 4:3 ratio screen (like YouTube) or the "normal" wide screen. [:D]

Many thanks Ted for testing it and really sorry it can't run. With my son's PC, I didn't tested the .zip file (I mailed it to you), but after lauching the .exe, we saw some strange things: display problems inside the stuff, unresponding commands and then crash of the program.

Many threads on the net about the compatibility between Visual Basic and Vista, like this:

http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?t=530299

Here is the point of view of Microsoft (not sure it helps):

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vbrun/ms788708.aspx

If someone here has the solution, he/she is welcome. [8D]

And thanks a lot, Nige. Really happy you have had fun with that little joke.

I made external haps because, if the Haptek commands can be embedded in the VB code (and then in the .exe), I noticed they don't support a timing with Clock [t= ...]. All the commands must simultaneously start (I have an idea of solution, but not sure it works).

And it's finally a good thing because you can play now with the haps and customize the stuff for yourself. [:)]

Thanks again everyone for trying it. [:)]

4:3 might be best, since I don't have a widescreen computer, but if you want, you can make both. It's your call. [:D][:D][:D]

Thanks, GT40!!

Wow, imagine clicking a button, having the gal appear and sing a selected song and do somersaults!! [:D][:D][:D][:D]

The possibilities are endless, I just wish code wasn't so hard for me.

No problem, Mark. Please just be patient. [:D][:D][:D]

I guess there is no need to use Visual Basic for you future wishes, lol. With my "old" method, JavaScript (in an HTML page) can do many smart things too. VB is interesting for making pretty interfaces and sophisticated programs. I used it because I like experiments, and it's a nice way to learn the language. [:)]

Hi GT! Just received your mail. zip still would not open so I downloaded the 10 files to a new folder on desktop. The program works perfectly. It is a lot of fun and accepts haps, oggs, text files and bodyskins. Thank you![8D][8D][8D]

Yes!! Really happy it works, Ted! And next time, I shall use a more recent version of WinZip.

Like Nige, you have very good ideas. You changed the haps and did something totally different. Thanks for testing.

Now wondering why it doesn't run fine on my son's Vista PC (no problem, he doesn't worry about that at all!). [:D]

Many thanks all, for testing that joke. Because you have a lot of good ideas, here is an update, with a little "tool". [:)]

Hap 03 to Hap 16 are empty, so you can copy and past your favorite or new haps in them. A 1 second movement or a 5 minutes script. Nothing more than dropping haps in the Haptek player. And thanks to Mark for Laura's skin.

You have to download the same zip again:

http://gt40.chez-alice.fr/Haptek/Experiments.zip (now 1.33 MB)

and then launch "test.exe". Not a tool, just a toy. [:D]

Cool!![:D][:D][:D][:D]

When i get around to it (feel like playing) I'll add my Haps to it.

Gosh, so much here to catch up on.
G.T., this looks like fun, gonna have to give it a try. [8D]

Thanks all for testing. [:)]

Maybe you still discovered the bug: if you use a script with a non-body_female character, you have a "little" problem. Like with the Haptek player.

- A first solution could be to put a removal script in a button, like this:

#Haptek  Version= 1.00 HapType= script FileType= text

\DelPerson [figure= body_female]
\DelPerson [figure= hair5_9exp]
\DelPerson [figure= ...] (all the figures you use)

- Another one is to make hap00.hap empty (it can be save in another button). So when you launch the program, the Haptek window is empty. Then you can use any character in your new script. Of course, you have to relaunch the stuff everytime you change the character (fullbod, torso, head...). Not very smart but easier.

Sorry. I told you I am a newbie. [:D]

AND THE WINNER IS...

Here his the good place (less visible) for posting a political stuff, lol. A short (interactive) skit, using the fact that you can put some VB controls (like here, the picture of a desk) on the Haptek window. So the character can move BETWEEN the background and the "object". If you want to play with her, you can download (again!)

http://gt40.chez-alice.fr/Haptek/Experiments.zip

and then launch "winner.exe". Please don't touch your arrow keys before the "movie" ends: I have spent a pretty lot of time tuning the timing of the script (at least, for my computer). [:)]

It runs fine under XP (with Vista, never sure). You can make a Democrat version by changing start2.hap and its elements. The other haps of the stuff are left2, center, right2, far2 and sing. If you have some time to waste...

Many thanks to Mark for the skin and to Nige for the hair of Sarah Laura Marilyn. Hope you’ll enjoy. Republican or not. [:D]

But if you don't like her, now you have CNN (hope it works). [:D]

It's "cnn.exe". Thanks again to Mark and Nige. [8D]

Edit: update (invisible, I hope so) because of a little mistake.

Just a little message to the few people who might have had fun with these little jokes (thanks to them).

As you can see (now, not see, lol), the CNN TV (in cnn.exe) doesn't work anymore. CNN has changed the way to broadcast its four channels on the web. Now they are at

http://edition.cnn.com/video/flashLive/live.html

And so sorry, another very annoying bug appeared: the winner was not the expected one!!

Afraid I can't fix this... [:D]

Thanks for the update GT. I'll have to admit I had forgoten about this program. I keep your jukebox html shortcut on my desktop and play with it occationaly. I'll have to take this out and play with it again. My .haps are better aranged now thanks to Dusky. I've wanted to do a stand-up comedy routine for a long time but you know it's all about timeing and gestures.[8D]

Many thanks, Ted. Oh yes, a stand-up comedy is a great idea, and would be something very original. If it uses the lovely fullbods you make for us, sure it will be a very cool stuff.[8D]

Hope you will do this soon. [:)]
