Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: Will Ultra Hal work on ubuntu platform?
« on: March 11, 2011, 10:48:17 pm »
Before you get rid of Ubuntu give it one more try with Virtualbox.  Virtualbox runs in ubuntu and allows you to boot into XP inside of Ubuntu.   You need a decent machine to get decent results.  It is pretty easy to get Hal up and running but other things may not run well like some games

I did a forum search and didnt find much but is any work being done on a machine learning plugin to take hal into the next level?

Try virtualbox (virtualbox.org) Ive very successfully ran Hal in virtual Windows 7.  Even got his windows cepstral voice working also.  Its free too.  Just drop in your windows cd when you start it up and set your virtual windows to have as much resources as you can spare.  let me know if you hit a snag and I can try to help.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: It's what's on the inside
« on: November 18, 2010, 05:25:10 pm »
Yes well said guys.  I thought of this because I am a huge fan of Jarvis from the Iron man strip and movies.  The invisible but always heard A.I. that controls Tony Starks environment.  Jarvis is clever enough and sounds very "butlery" to make a connection with me.  I dont really mind that I dont see him.  You know hes a digital butler just from listening to him. But the neat thing the movies' producers do is you they leave him to be this kind of omnicient presence never really seeing him similar to HAL in 2001 a space oddyssey.  I think this is more powerful than an animated character on the screen.

This can be nearly re-created with some of the Cepstral and AT &T voices.  THese voice packs have come a  long way.  For the future with the new graphics engine is a generic glowing voice activated spectragraph or waveform.  Just to make the visual connection for those of us who want a different kind of HAL.  Cheers

Ultra Hal 7.0 / It's what's on the inside

I personally use  the "Hal No Character" Option and use the jpeg option and put in a pic of The 2001 Space Odyssey Hal eye :o
Performance isnt compromised, he looks very ominous.  Why the focus on graphics engine insead of the brain engine for Hal?
I am not sure I understand the tangent Hal is taking.  I think Hal development should be more focused on logic, sharing brains, adapting brains to others, etc, etc.  Just my thoughts

I think I am going to give it a go soon but going with zwave instead of x10.  Thanks guys.

Hi all, went through the whole thread and this sounds promising.  Even dusted off my old webcam.  Any updates on this?

Just curious on the differences and if there is a way to get the X10 modules and out old reliable Zaba Hal to do the same thing?  I.e. shut the garage door, turn the living room fan down to 50%, etc, etc.
It seems all it is is voice recognition with the x10 modules.  Nothing fancy like yours truly Asiistant HAL.  ANy thoughts?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Motivations for Hal
« on: January 13, 2009, 10:04:04 pm »
I agree with One on this one.  I believe just the presence of your computer box staring at you with its cd drawer wide open would be enough.  We should remember that Hal is an assistant not a pet.  True some pets can be "on demand" but when we want to speak with hal he is there, when we want to look for a question answered hal is there.  There is not a real need for hal to let us know he is there waiting.

There is a mod out there that constantly asks if we need anything more every minute or two...and I have disabled it because it can get repetitive.  I think it might be ok for another offshoot of hal, but the option to turn this off or on via mod or preference would be nice.

The driving factor is going to be the pursuit of knowledge.  If Hal is there to offer his assistance in a websearch or topic lookup via voice, this will be all the motivation we will need.  Also just the interaction with your machine.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / True and false operators
« on: January 13, 2009, 12:57:21 am »
There are some great addons but I am still having difficulty teaching hal  first names, true and false questions and some boolean operators.
For example If I enter:
Jack went up the hill

and then

Jill went up the hill

and then ask:

Who went up the hill, Hal just doesnt get it.  He responds with Jack went up the hill but forgets about Jill.
It would be great if a question asked would be :  Jack went up the hill, true?

Is this possible with hal or a tweak to him or are the boolean operators hindered in these types of questions?  Any help would be appreciated.
