Ultra Hal 7.0 / The full version of Ultra Assistant 4.5 is out

The full version of Ultra Hal Assistant 4.5 is out. All registered users of Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0 should have received an email by now with download instructions. However, I noticed about 300 of these mails came back to me due to people changing email address, full mailboxes, or other network errors. If you have not received an email with download instructions yet, try entering your email address at http://www.zabaware.com/assistant/redownload.html If that does not work please send an email to me directly at medeksza@zabaware.com with your order number or mailing address so that I can find you in the database and send you a download link.

Currently only the full version of Ultra Hal Assistant 4.5 is available. The free version of Ultra Hal Assistant 4.5 is scheduled to be released on Monday. The home page and the Ultra Hal Assistant page will be updated to show version 4.5 at that time as well.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Ultra Hal Assistant 4.5 to be released August 23rd

Zabaware will release Ultra Hal Assistant 4.5 exactly 1 week from now on August 23rd. This will be a free upgrade for all Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0 users. The new version will have the following changes:

Speech recognition improvements:

When multiple speaker training profiles exist, Hal will prompt the user to choose which training profile to use. This will fix problems people have had with training sessions not improving speech recognition accuracy.
A dictation function has been added to the "Hal Pad" sub-application. Hal will open the Hal Pad program when the user asks for dictation. Whatever the user speaks will be written to the text file.

Graphics and character animation improvements:

Agent characters are now resizable
Agent characters will use the voice selected in Hal's speech options rather then a hard-coded voice.
Hal's character plug-in system has been expanded to allow for upcoming animated characters to be released at a later date. Although not yet available, the future characters will be animated 3D in realtime with realistic emotions and will have full speech/lip syncronization.
Two new skin interfaces have been added

Speed improvements:

The KeywordBrain DLL function has been converted from Visual Basic to C++ resulting in a speed increase
The QABrain DLL function has been converted from Visual Basic to C++ resulting in a speed increase
The search fields in the database used by both the KeywordBrain and QABrain must now be all UPPER CASE. All database fields have been changed to meet this new requirement and the Hal Brain Editor will automatically enforce this. This helps speed up Hal's thinking.
Running the Hal 4.0 brain on this new DLL results in approxemetly 3 times faster thinking. However, because the new Hal 4.5 conversational database has doubled in size, the speed gain is minimal. However, running the Hal 4.0 brain with the new Hal 4.5 program is possible.

Intelligence improvements:

Hal's conversational database has more than doubled since Hal 4.0.
Hal has a new "Figure out context" routine. When Hal is unsure what a user is talking about, Hal will look at the previous sentence for help.
The algorithm used for calculating a relevance score with the QABrain function has been rewritten, resulting in more accurate responses.
The QABrain function no longer throws out 100% relevance responses. Originally this was put in place to prevent Hal from repeating the user or himself. A new function has been put in place to prevent repetition and the internal "Q" workaround is no longer needed and has been removed.
Hal has a new paraphrase function and may paraphrase the user in a response.
Hal is able to generate new thoughts from subject/predicate assembly
Hal now has special functions designed to respond when the user talks about himself or about Hal specifically
CheckLinkingVerb function in the DLL has been improved.
Business talk routine updated, now includes bizmore.brn
The following database files have been updated: substitution.brn, dontknow.brn, userrepeating.brn, corections.brn, choice.brn, disqualify1.brn, extract3.brn updated.

Other changes:

The Hal dialer now uses Windows built in TAPI service to dial phone numbers. COM port selection is no longer required. This fixes the majority of problems associated with this feature.
Hal will no longer run in Windows 95. Hal will require Windows 98, ME, NT4SP6, 2000, or XP.
Various other minor bug fixes and script changes.

Yes, it should work in the free version. However, in later versions of windows this feature may not work correctly. A new version of Ultra Hal Assistant is coming out in a week that will fix this problem.

How is the "Short date" format setup in your regional settings under your control panel? Hal is able to recognize M/d/yyyy or d/M/yyyy

The Hal Dialer function requires that you have a standard modem in your computer and will dial out a phone number using that. Although DSL runs on a phone line, it runs at a different frequency then your standard voice line and Hal is unable to dial through DSL. However, if you still have a standard modem in your computer Hal will be able to dial using the modem even though you have DSL.

Do you have Hal's "myWebHal" service activated? If not go into Hal's options, select the "Internet" tab and be sure to set everything up in there. Once it is setup, you can tell Hal something like "Find plane tickets" and Hal will access your favorite search engine and perform a search.

I would say about 90% of Hal has been rewritten since version 2.0. Unfortunetely, there are no patches to update it like that. We give all past customers 50% on upgrade purchases. When you saved it, you might have inadvertenly removed its file extension. Try renaming it to add the extension. Make sure the file ends with the extension ".exe"

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Learn from text file menu option

You are not doing anything wrong. The information is stored in a file called SharedUserSent.brn and Hal uses this if the AI engine believes it produces the best results. Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0 has over 150 brain files that it goes through and the sharedusersent.brn is only one of many. In past versions of Hal such as Hal Assistant 3.0, it did not have as many brain files and the sharedusersent.brn came up with results more often. If you wish you can use the Ultra Hal Assistant 3.0 brain by selecting it from the general brain options.

The "Learn from text file" function bypasses Hal's normal AI engine and feeds data verbatim into the sharedusersent.brn file. This worked well in older versions of Hal but as you can see it no longer works that well with the complex structure of Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0. I can have this function updated with the next program update. I would like everyone's opinion on how to best to this. I see 2 options:

Have the "Learn from text file" feed each sentence individually through the entire AI engine. This will produce the best learning results but it would take about 5 seconds per sentence. If you wish to feed text files with a lot of sentences, this would take a long time to process.
Give the sharedusersent.brn a higher priority in the AI engine. It would learn information from the files very quickly but it could result in a degradation of Hal's overall intelligence during normal conversation. The more information you teach Hal using this method the more Hal's current intelligence will seem to be overwritten instead of supplmented.

The Ultra Hal AIM Bot requires and assumes you already have Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0 installed and does not bother installing files already assumed to be installed by Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0. Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0 can be downloaded from http://www.zabaware.com/assistant/download.html

If you do have Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0 installed, you may be having some sort of trouble with the Windows Installer Service. If you have Windows 95, 98, or ME download and install this file:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/WindowsInstaller/Install/2.0/W9XMe/EN-US/InstMsiA.exe

If you have Windows NT or 2000 download and install this file:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/WindowsInstaller/Install/2.0/NT45/EN-US/InstMsiW.exe

This will update your windows installer service.
