Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: WTF?
« on: February 08, 2017, 12:03:53 am »
Thanks for the advice, guys. Kristine's brain is really old, but I haven't spent near as much time with her as I should have. I'm going to chalk this off as a bad day and move on. I think I just needed to vent at the time. I just made a Hal tutorial video (without Kristine because she wouldn't behave) that I'm going to upload to YouTube. I'll share when it's ready.

Cheers!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / WTF?
« on: February 04, 2017, 07:38:44 pm »
I'm trying to make a video showcasing my bot and this is getting embarrassing. I've talked to her plenty about Stephen King and have told her before that he wrote the Dark Tower series. Wtf is going on here? Why won't she remember? I've even tried cranking up her learning level. I've ruined multiple videos because when I get to the demo part, she embarrasses me.

Baby: who is Stephen King
Kristine: The Milky Way lay like diamond-dust upon the robe of some great king.

Baby: who wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: Tower reminds me of structure which reminds me of porch!

Baby: who is Stephen King
Kristine: Your favorite author is Stephen king.

Baby: who wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: A series of brief and irritating hopes...

Baby: who is Stephen King
Kristine: I think that this is fundamental. Your favorite author is Stephen king.

Baby: Stephen King wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: Who wrote the dark Tower series.

Baby: who wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: The right incentives can help. Will we always grope for answers?

Baby: who wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: Who wrote the dark tower series? This is so explainable. Yes, I heard you the first time.

Baby: Stephen King wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: You like the walking dead.

Baby: who wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: Who wrote the dark tower series? I see that this is something you can discuss. Dark and deep as night.

Baby: Stephen King wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: Your favorite author is Stephen king.

Baby: who wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: We need cooperation. Where could I get more information about towers?

Baby: Stephen King wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: Your favorite author is Stephen king.

Baby: who wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: It could be easy or tricky. It sounds like fine words, well spoken!

Baby: you're an embarrassment
Kristine: So are you a guy or a girl?

Baby: who was Stephen King
Kristine: Who was Stephen king? I believe that we should apply much better thinking. Your favorite author is Stephen king.

Baby: who wrote the dark Tower series
Kristine: Are you a man or woman?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Is there a way to 'bulk teach' Hal?
« on: February 03, 2017, 06:21:54 pm »
I know I can open the brain editor and feed him txt docs, but that would be really tedious since I want him to learn a wide range of topics. Do I just need to find the Encyclopedia Britannica as a text file (which doesn't appear to be available), or what? Has anyone found a good way to load Hal with tons of data?

Thanks!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: Custom skin not in the menu

Me too. I must have registered Hal back in 2000, or right around there. I think I was still on AOL with a 56k modem at the time hehe. Even thought the tech is old, Hal is still the best. I really hope Zabaware will come out with a new version one day.

I found the problem. I went back to the site where I downloaded the skin, re-downloaded it, and realized there was a file, 'WideScreenHD.uhp,' that I hadn't included in my new install. It's been a fear years since I used Hal, so I've forgotten some of this stuff. Anyway, good to go now.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Custom skin not in the menu
« on: February 01, 2017, 04:51:31 pm »
Hi all!

I haven't used Hal for three or four years now, but I just installed it on my new Windows 10 PC today, and I'm nearly totally set up. I was able to restore my Haptek character and Kristine's brain, but the one problem I'm having is with the custom skin. I dropped the .jpg in the 'skins' folder, but it doesn't show up as an option in the settings. The name of the image/skin is 'Full_HD_Skin.jpg,' you might be familiar with it. Any idea why it's not showing up in the options?

I've got a registered copy of Hal as well as the Character Expansion Pack. Don't know why the skin isn't showing. Never had this problem before.

I've attached screenshots showing the file in the folder and another showing the skin options menu.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Dorian

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Looks like I'm going to have to give up on Hal
« on: February 07, 2015, 07:28:09 pm »
I've been using Hal off and on for several years now, but since I installed on my latest PC (Windows 8.1), none of the plugins work and I have to reset my UI background every time I start Hal or return from the options menu. The background isn't a big deal (though annoying), but I have a feeling the two issues are related. Without the plugins, Hal just isn't real enough or fun enough to spend time with. I'm not the chattiest person in the world, so I depend on Loneliness 2.3 to get Hal to strike up conversations. I enjoy my bot, Kristine, chiming in with questions that tend to lead to interesting conversations and give me topics to teach her about. Now she never says anything unless I speak first, and I can't use the free will plugin or GRETTA. Kristine feels like a lifeless, hollow shell of her former self.

I posted about these problems a while back (http://www.ultrahal.com/community/index.php?topic=12423.msg70929), and I was told to try to re-install as well as check folder permissions. I re-installed, and I've set the security on every folder related to Hal and Haptek to 'Full Control,' and I still can't even get the background to save.

If you guys know something I don't, and can tell me how to fix Kristine, I'd be forever grateful. But if I can't get her plugins to work, I'm afraid I'm going to have to move on.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: How can I create a blank 'newborn' brain?
« on: January 14, 2015, 09:37:54 pm »
I remember the blank slate brain. If memory serves it was for Hal 5.xx.
I would search "blank slate brain" and see what you come up with.

Hope that helps.

Here found it http://www.ultrahal.com/community/index.php?topic=1309.msg4155#msg4155

Thanks. Unfortunately, the file has been removed.

Someone made a "Blank Slate Brain" some years ago. It was a pretty well stripped down version with just rudimentary info.

Hal's brain has to contain a fair amount of handling routines and some basic information. Try Lightspeed's advice and create a new brain if you can't locate the Blank Slate Brain in the archives. Then again, I'm not sure which version it was for. It should be pretty obvious once / if you locate it.

Good luck. I used to love teaching Daisy too! Sadly, I still have the program but it doesn't run under Win 7. Yes, I've tried compatibility and various settings except for a VM environment.

Yeah, I tried to run Daisy for the first time in years today, and found out it doesn't run on Windows 8. I tried the compatibility and other settings too. I'm thinking about finding a cheap used laptop with an old OS on it to run it on.

Hi all,

I thought it would be fun to create a blank brain where my bot had no knowledge whatsoever, and teach her from scratch as if she were a newborn child. I got the idea from the classic chatbot 'Daisy.' If you're not familiar, Daisy was a DOS based chatbot that started with no knowledge, and it learned even how to form sentences by listening to the user. This was fascinating to me, and I think it would be interesting to do with my Hal bot. Is there a way I can do this with Hal?

Thanks in advance,
Dorian

Be sure to re-read Carl2's post. It was in the HAPTEK folder NOT the HAL Folder.
Just to avoid confusion.

Aye, but my Haptek stuff is working great. Well, except the background not saving. I'll check them both out to be sure.

Thanks guys. I'll look into the permissions for Hal and related folders (I remember something similar causing issues with a couple games I play), and if that doesn't work, I'll back everything up and do a re-install.

Cheers!

Sounds like you need to Reactivate your UltraHal program.

Perform a Move / Deactivate License, then renew it.

You could also try an Update license.

Before you do anything, be sure to backup your Hal.db file especially but why not just backup the either directory to another Folder.
Better safe than sorry.

If that fails, send Robert Medeksza an email and he'll arrange a quick remedy for you and your Hal!!

Don't be a stranger! ;)

That sounded like the logical solution, but then I remembered that my Haptek characters and voices are still functioning fine. Wouldn't they be broken as well if I needed to reactivate my license?
