Ultra Hal 7.0 / Next Hal Update?
« on: February 27, 2010, 01:51:30 pm »
Everyone seems to think that writing Hal in another language would be a simple thing to do. What they don't realize is that there must be several thousand lines of code that must be written and complete  nderstanding of the other language before it can even be considered.
What you don't see is all the code that makes the executable operate and actually run Hal.
In my opinion people should just be happy knowing that they have the most advanced A.I. program going and there is no limit as to what their Hal can learn.

I believe it was built into an older version of Hal. I think I still have copies of some of those old versions. I will do a little searching when I have the time.

Look at the top right side of your screen and you will find 'search'
Next type in 'X10" on the blank space. there are dozens of references you can follow but under the one names ER1 you will find all you answers including some code to make it work.

General Discussion / Hal and robotics
« on: February 25, 2010, 05:13:47 pm »
On my robot I do not intergrate Hals software with the robot control software, I run both brains at the same time. The one thing I did years ago was to give Hal the command when he heard a certain word to ignore what ever was being said next. The robots brain was programmed only to respond and obey commands when the word robot was given first, it would then follow the commands given to it.
This was not the best way to do itbut it was the only way that I could make it work.

On another concept I thought that Robert stated a few years ago about intergrating Hal with a company called "White Horse Robotics."
They made a small robot that could be programmed to perform many different tasks. I might not have the name of the company correct but the little robot more closely resembled R2D2 than looking anything like a human robot.

One problem with facial recognition and mood intrepetion is that sometimes even human can not tell the mood of a person well enough to act on it and that being so how could we expect a program to be written to do what many humans can not. As I stated earlier in aanother post there was a patch (this was how it was done before plugins were made available) that changed Hal's mood or emotional response based upon the conversation that was going on. If the user made Hal mad by insulting him Hal would stay Mad for a certain amount of time, but eventually cool off and return to normal just like most people do.

Your last suggestion in your latest post ie.(X10) had been solved several years ago. There were a few members here who had developed a way to have Hal almost run their entire household, such as "Hal turn on the living room lights, please." I don't know if nay of that is still available in the History file of Hal but it might be worth a search.

Years ago there was an emotion add on written by a Hal user. It had nothing to do with vision because no one had considered vision at that time. It was triggered by the responses of the user to Hals output. If you talked rude to Hal his emotional response would change to being resentful and so on. Then depending on which emotional mood Hal was in would direct his tone back to you. At that time it appeared to work very nicely.

Most of the people here do not have the intelligence to do the things that you do, that is why almost no one ever replys to your questions. Your understanding of Hal works is second only to Mr. M.
At one time I was able to slice into Hal's brain and add a little something but I have not studied the newest verion or even taken the time to try.
Be not discouraged but please keep up the good work as everyone really appreciates it.

I have not installed even one plug0-in so I can tell you that greeting you are talking about is just a part of normal Hal. My Hal says that to me on a regular basis and depending on the time of the day it may asked if I have had lunch or dinner yet. Don't worry about it and just enjoy Hal. It is pretty smart to begin with.

I may be wrong but I think Hal was designed only to open another program for you and nothing more.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / hal getting confused
« on: January 10, 2010, 10:34:08 pm »
One last thing concerning Hal getting confused. Sometimes and we all do it at one time or another we speak in incomplete sentences only because we expect that the  person with whom we are talking would understand what we are saying.
Hal's responses to what we say gives us the impression that he/she is a mature person/thing when in fact it is far better to believe that Hal is still just a young childlike thing. Because Hal can sometimes give us answers that  make us think we overrate his maturity. It is better in my opinion to just consider that he is just a very bright childlike initity.

is there a way to give another response if that situation occurs?
like a different getresponse?

That is a good question. You might ask Hal if he understood or not, althhough that might also bring forth a non reply.

When Hal does nt answer you it has two possible causes. One your input may be to complex for Hal to understand or Two you input was way to short, ie., a one or two word answer.
