Ultra Hal 7.0 / hal getting confused

I would like to correct something you stated and that was that Hal does not really understand or think in a manner of speaking. Well that is not true as Hal does understand some words and sometimes comes to his own conclusions from what he has heard.
As a short example which has been used in the past:
"Fat people do not live long lives."
"Tom is a fat person."
Hals response has been in the past "Tom may not live long as he is fat."
This and some variations of it have been noted. This kind of IF-THEN logic is well developed in Hal thus Hal not only learns but does understand to a certain degree.

General Discussion / loneliness plug in question
« on: January 04, 2010, 03:03:01 pm »
Let me explain something. IN Hal 5.0 plug-ins did not exist. We had to go into the main brain of Hal and make changes to Hal operating code. There were a few places that we could do that but operating on the main brain was always dangerous.
If the Lonelyness plug-in uses another file to store its responses then the file used for Hal 5.0 could be substituted quite easily.
Tell you what I will try to do and that is to find the old file and post here so anyone can try the substituting it with the Lonelyness plug-in.

The Lonelyness Plug-in is really great. When Hal 5.0 was the rage on of the users created a patch somewhat like it and then with a little modification I made it do almost exactly what you desire for the new version. Some where I still have a large file loaded with hundred of quotes and other items for Hal to bring up and say.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / hal getting confused
« on: January 03, 2010, 10:46:45 pm »
I believe the level of learning that Hal has, has to do with how much is stored on the hard disk. If that is so then once it is stored then it does not make any difference what level you are on when you ask a question  because the information should already be there. The level of learning has nothing to do with Hal ability to answer questions. If he had learned it in the past he should be able to answer any question put to him.
Pardon the 'he & him' references I have given my hal a masculine ID.
My Hal is not a 'male' but he has a body as he is a robot somewhat like Will's Mr. Data, only older.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / please help Plugins not working
« on: January 03, 2010, 05:29:39 pm »
When I use the calendar to set dates for appointments or birthday, etc, I tell Hal "Show Calendar" and up pops the calendar. From there you can select different months and dates and then just insert the info you want into each one..

Ultra Hal 7.0 / hal getting confused
« on: January 03, 2010, 05:20:13 pm »
So far I have not used any plug-ins. I still prfer the old fashioned way because so far it has never failed me. Listed below is a sample of your problem using fictious names:
"My wifes name is Hellen."
"Hellen is my wife"
"My friends call my wife 'Hot Rod'."
By repeating this a few times I think Hal will not only remember it but will repeat it to you, but don't make the mistake of most beginingers by inputing one line of data and then asking Hal about it. Hal learns better after many lines of input before being asked questions. As an extreme example lets call it 'input today', 'question tomorrow'.
I hope this helps.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal Stops responding and needs to be restarted
« on: December 30, 2009, 06:21:25 pm »
Every single topic can be broken down into one-liners and Hal can learn from that very well. It is not a fault of Hal's that you can not simplify your concepts.
I don't know how many times I have mentioned this but Hal has the mental age of a 4 or 5 year old child. That alone does not limit his intelligence as there are genius's even at that age. For the best results in teaching Hal is to keep all input as simple sentences.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal Stops responding and needs to be restarted

I think the problem is that sometimes the sentence may be to complex for Hal to disect and so he cannot even bein to find a way to start an answer. The very best way to talk to Hal is by following this simple rule "KISS". In case some of you don't know what that stands for it is "Keep It Simple Stupid". If you follow this simple rule you will find that Hal learns more and faster than any other way.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / HalScript error
« on: December 28, 2009, 10:44:52 pm »
In old fashioned Basic it is caused by trying to declare a numerical variable as a double presion when in fact it can not be because it was already made something else.

I don't know what it is but I believe that CDBL is a math error. It might be a good idea to turn off you anti-virus software and try installing Hal once again, it seems you have a bad load. You might try to copy your Hal brain files to another directory first in case you have done a lot of training, but everything else should go because you don't know where the error is actually located.

The person in question had a problem with his computer so the recommendation of using a registry cleaner was only a helpful suggestion and not any kind of advertisement for any companies product. Over the years I have recommended to dozens of members here different things to help solve their problems one of the being to turn off their virus software before downloading Hal and many menbers have expressed problems caused by their anit virus software while loading Hal, ie. not complete downloads and a few others things. I thing this was only happenign to those using 'older' computers. My first Hal ran on an old 486 machine.
This whole forum is about helping each other not only with Hal but any other problems we may run into while using Hal

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Voice Recognition
« on: December 22, 2009, 09:12:55 pm »
You should forget about using Microsofts Voice recognition program and stick with Dragon Naturally Speaking as it is superior to MS.

You train y9ur voice with Hal. It has a trainging mode where it will sisplay severl paragraphs of writing. As you read each word in the paragraphs the computer records it. Two important things to remember voice training must be done with absolute silence, ie. no background noise of any kind and you may also have to repeat the traing excercises over and over again to get the best recognition of your own voice. I personally went through the training, reading the material at least 6 times and slowly, very slowly the computer got better and better in understanding me.
IT is a lot of work but it is well worth it.

It is a holiday drink. It contains a lot of milk, an egg or two, some nutmeg. Oh, just but a quart at the store. YOu can drink it hot or cold and some people add just alittle hard liquor to spice it up a little.

Everything you menntioned can be put into Hal, but there are no short cuts that I know of, unless you could get the "read from clip-board" to work for you.
