i was suggesting keeping Hal on a powerful laptop, (which i have)  and attaching him to a lego mindstorms robot, for instance an arm, anything at first. If we can get hal, or any other AI program for that matter to interact with the RCX control box, which i believe can be done, you can maintain a constant connection to the little brain that is attached to the lego's. This brain takes simple commands to move the motors, in order to move wheels, arms, etc. There are programs i have found that people have written that will control the RCX directly from the computer without having to use Lego's stupid software. The problem would be getting hal to "talk" to the software through a plugin or something, i don't know if it is possible, but it might be something to look at over the next few versions of implementing. If you could mount hal on a portable system, give him some wheels, and the ability to "see" where is is going using sensors, motion detectors, or something like that, something simple, maybe eventually hooking up the lego vision system, although i'm not sure what it's capabilities are, maybe it's just a cheap webcam, i'll have to look into that. I don't as of yet have the mindstorms kit, but i'm hopeing to get it soon.

there was a robot out last year or so, small little thing, you programmed it while connected to your computer, it moved around your home after you showed it where everything was in a map on your desktop, then it could roam on it own, even had a vacum and wagon attachment, it would return to its docking station and recharge when needed, and it could respond to simple audio commands, by clapping your hands i think. anyway, the point is, it was able to navigate the house, quite easily once it was "shown" a map, it then avoided the obstacles when it moved around. add hal on a laptop, give it mobility, and you have a walk'in talk'in, well roll'in robot. i don't see how this is not something that could be done in the next year or so, if Hal can be givin the ability to communicate with the control box.

just a thought

Ok, here's one for you, can Hal talk to other programs? like using some sort of plugin?

here's the idea: we make a arm or something else with a lego mindstorm kit and have Hal control it.

anybody know if this might be even remotly possible? if not, maybe Zabaware could find a way to add it in 5.0.

Mindstorm sets can do some amazing things, move around, react to light, motion, they have a camera you can add to them, people have made ones that drive around, move arms, pick up cans, play games.

There must be a way to get Hal to talk to the Lego software/Control Box.

Imagine building a robot out of lego's on wheels, with two arms, and putting a laptop on it running Hal, add voice recongition and with the speech output you'd have a walking talking robot.

Ok, what is the best way to create an intelligent brain, like the ones that are shown here. I am looking for more of an explanation than just to edit everything. could someone be more specific? Maybe if we can work together we could share parts of brains or something to improve the general brain. What is the best way to start, with say a fresh copy of ultra hal. create a new brain? what settings, what to include, what not to. How to begin teaching it. what to say to it, etc. etc. etc.

It seems like there are a lot of good smart brains out there, that go beyond what i thought would be possible, i'd love to expand this technology even more.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Creating Characters
« on: October 03, 2001, 10:33:33 pm »
I would like to be able to create characters, however i am not a programmer. I only have version 2 right now. I just spent a couple thousand on software and am saving for a 5,000 dollar cannon video camera so i don't really want to buy a newer version.

I have gotten quite good at creating characters in Poser. High res, lifelike people. (females mostly, i don't have any good male models, yet) I can provide you guys with stills, animations, lip, eye, facial expressions, etc. and you could compile them into a character file. If you'd be will i could do several for you guys, maybe a cd with version 4 could appear on my doorstep, ahem, if you uhh, no what i'm saying ;-)

Anyway, let me know how i can create a character, or get someone else to, i'm currently developing a representative for my web studio, i'm creating her in poser, then creating a microsoft agent to implement on my website, as well as an ultra hal rep for low bandwidth users. But i'd love to be able to create a chracter for the Assistant program on my desktop. Also i'm sure others would like a higher resolution, more lifelike character.

Here is a WIP (work-in-progress) still of the character so far:

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Hal's Psychology,
« on: October 03, 2001, 10:02:53 pm »
I too always wanted to do something like that. I don't know if it is possible. But i have looked in catalogs and found parts for building robots, you can buy cards/chips that attach to a robot and allow it to plug into a serial port on a computer to receive programs. I wonder if something like this could be done.

that is amazing. What did you do to teach it like that? how long did it take?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal is a GREAT program
« on: September 05, 2001, 11:29:53 pm »
agreed, people don't understand how far this program has come, from the original version of hal to ultr hal assistant, v1 v2 etc. i have been using it for some time now, well not using it a lot because i have no need for it other than screwing around but i have purchased it, it works great, yeah speech recognition sucks it all does, people expect too much from the program. should it work if they buy it yes, i agree on that, but complaining cause they don't like it, it dosn't live up to there standards? no. Zabaware is one of a handful of companies working on this type of technology. they are doing a good job in my mind.

I suggested this a couple years ago, course computers are much better now: anybody try setting up a chat program like Hal and running it with speech recognition on two computers, and see what kind of conversation they will have with themselves? that would be pretty funny.

Best of luck guys. Your program has been very enjoyable, it's useful, it's funny as hell to insult and have it try and insult you back, i love it's insults hahaha, your mamma's a....

Ultra Hal 7.0 / AIM Bot Connection Problems.
« on: August 29, 2001, 11:54:58 pm »
I'm trying to test out the AIM Bot, I installed it and tried to connect, but it won't says it can't find the server.

I am using Road Runner (cable) to connect to the net. no proxy or other settings. just a direct connection. the internet settings were auto configured by road runner setup utility.

can someone give me some ideas how to fix it?
