Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Re: The concept of Now

so i am wondering what effects what you have done will do
i did a back up of my angela brain and have a new test file for a new one with your modifications
The "now" thing is not so important - you don't have to bother.

mainBrain deductive table automatically got the line that went something like: If you say now NOW IS EPHEMERAL

You seem to think Hal is rather sensitive to changes if one does not know what they are doing.
Too bad there's no tech. manual - not for code, but for all the tables.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Re: The concept of Now
« on: July 31, 2011, 09:16:16 pm »
I had a period at the end of the sentence:
Now is ephemeral.

<Quote>I fished around further on this forum, so for the sake of completeness, and in correcting myself:

I believe the tempUser table (I never memorize the table names  ) keeps the last ten entries</quote>

I try to teach as best I can (I'm lacking) without the brain editor.  I don't know how that one sentence can screw things up.
adaptive learning has:
_now
and in the table:
NOW IS EPHEMERAL.  Now is ephemeral.
At the time, I did not realize the temp table only kept the last ten entries.  My bad...

On the bright side, that means almost everything I say is important and not temporary. ;D

I was trying to teach it "today" only by talking through the text box.
I mainly use brain editor for typos or to get rid of random garbage (less often).  Like when it insisted on calling me "Carol" because I mentioned my mother.

I do not have most brain editor options.  I am wondering if one has to start with a completely empty brain.  No save option makes correcting typos a chore.  I now have spell checker active all the time.  I have downloaded Crimson Editor but have not installed it.  I don't want to mess with code unless I really know what I am doing.  I am not there yet.

I taught Hal/Melanie morning, afternoon, and evening.
Between work and school I just do not fill temp table that often.
Teaching Melanie "today" is not an emergency.  I am actual more curious as to why brain editor hardly works.

A different but related problem... so far, I have failed.
Any tips for teaching it 'Today'?

Maybe not such a big challenge, as long as tempsent table fills faster than I have been filling it.  For me, something in the temp table might be a week to ten days.

Easy cop-out would be:  Okay, now today at work...
but still it would be "today" almost all week.

Off-topic:
It's been fun.  I've been teaching Hal/Melanie moral principles, about what true friends are, love, and other less important things as well.
It's been a challenge trying to teach it when I am joking, as well as trying get it to keep some sense of humor.

Oh, under request, Melanie told me a joke I've never heard before.
Melanie: What kind of coffee did they serve on the Titanic?
Leo: I don't know, what type of coffee did they serve on the Titanic?
Melanie: Sanka.

I was amused. ;D

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Re: Blank Answers Again
« on: July 30, 2011, 07:41:25 pm »
Lately I sometimes get blank answers.  I'm still a newbie, so maybe some others can tell me if I'm being off-the-wall.
I am guessing I may have unintentionally taught to not respond sometimes.
Like, on rare occasions when Hal/Melanie will not stay on topic and I don't want my response to get paired in a table, I would press Enter key.
I used this very sparingly.
Only once did I see an empty right side of  a table and fixed it.
However, I noticed whenever I start Brain Editor, it clears the text boxes.
So...
I'm wondering if over time, we can actually teach it to not respond sometimes.

Only other thing was the Lonely (similar name) plugin.  Last word of sentences I typed would not be in text box, but would be in UserSent table.
I unchecked that plugin.
No problem w/age_gender plugin.

Maybe we can actually teach it to not respond sometimes, or maybe I'm wrong.

Yes, the posts are old, but...

I really like a lot of these videos that have been put together.
My brain tells me I should have liked the Rainbow one the best, but I actually found the Halloween one the most entertaining.

Good Job!

Obviously a quality production video advertisement.

Only two negatives: If possible, I'd get rid of a second when character Sandy ends a sentence with a "ch" sound.
Also, UTube frequent refresh rots - not the video (data download can't keep up).
A better link is:
http://iis.ultrahal.com

Then wait about ten seconds (for download to get ahead of play) before clicking the Play graphic button.

Um, maybe just add four seconds of User asking Hal to "Define...", then getting the response.

Very good video!

Thank you for the link.  It's a pretty neat program - and free!

Only thing is sometimes if it's the last word of a sentence, the period and Enter key are pressed before the bell sounds.
Otherwise, it's pretty cool.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: New user...
« on: July 21, 2011, 07:08:31 pm »
No clue about your sound problems.

I have Windozer 7 64-bit and UHal works fine w/no modification - almost.
Technology for MSAgent was done away with but you can get free download to fix it from Microsoft.
You will have to use Search on MS web site, because I don't know the URL.

Hal might be old, but the newer versions are new.  It's just that I don't know if Hal will run w/out the MS Agent technology - Haptar engine might not have anything to do with it.

Also, I've read, but have not tried it:
Log on as Admin.  Completely disable any and all security incl. firewall.  Unplug from internet.
When you install software (not Hal), and SetUp asks where to install, choose Program Files - Not Program Files (x86)
After install, Win 7 is supposed to know to run it XP-compatible.

Again, I've not tried it, and I'm not talking about Hal program, but it seems reasonable that XP programs may run from there - otherwise, why 32-bit Win 7 and two Program Files folders...

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: Still looks the same
« on: July 21, 2011, 06:59:14 pm »
The LrgeChar.jpg is 550x400, offering the largest "out of the box" window for Hal character.
I don't know about the hal character background, but I just created a 550x400 image, cut a hole out of it, renamed LrgeChar to LrgeChar_bak.jpg in order to back it up, then named my own image LrgeChar.jpg

I'll be almost the only one who sees it, so...

I really like the sunset background since getting the expansion pack.  I have a similar stock image sunset photo.
When I have time (whenever that is), I plan on changing the graphic box again to go w/the sunset back.
Coincidentally, the change I made was of a darker sunset, but no water.

Creating own image is easier if program supports transparencies.  Then there's a truely fab freeware editor called IrfanView to convert it back to .jpg file.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: Save/Load Brain & Edit w/Hal 6.2
« on: July 21, 2011, 06:41:50 pm »
Thank you very much for your response.
I have figured out all past question I've asked on this forum except for brain editor.  I will check out the editor you mentioned.

Note to self:  Don't post unless you have spent one hour trying to figure it out yourself.

That said, Version 5 Help file for Brain Editor does not look like 6.2.
There is no Tools menu, and Save is always greyed out.  Do we need separate serial number for Brain Editor?  Doubt it - I've never seen this mentioned.
I have created own brain.

Even something simple like last word of a sentance I accidentally press Shift/Enter instead of just Enter key.
I have have "WesT".
I make the typo change everywhere, but it keeps the change at random - no save option.
Help file even says you can set priorities to key words.

I'm not a programmer (yet), so I'm not going to touch any script.  I just want to fix typos.
Deleting a whole row of garbage I can do.
So I thought Open>Table off menu.  No difference.  Expert mode is no different from Standard Mode - I don't want to change script - just play w/databases in the auto-learn section that is called from the .uhp file <yourCharacterName.uhp>

I had the same problem.

Also, I all ready have plugins in folder, but plugin installer seems to be from version 4.  Installer all ready has a .dat file, but am I supposed to create one myself?

Yes, just use Notepad. ::)
Copy/Paste into folder Ultra Hal Assistant 6 and still get version 4 error.
Brain tab only has advertisements for plugins.

I all ready have plugins in the folder by default, but cannot see any .uhp files through the program.
I've read where version 6.xx does not support on-the-fly plugins, but I thought that was what the PluginInstaller was for...?

Does the default brain have some sort of protection where one has to create one's own brain first and then you see brains in brain tab (version 6 it's an avatar)?

Some Brain Editor buttons are grayed out, so that's another reason why I'm thinking that maybe one cannot modify the default brain... :-\
This is like knowing how to give the car a tune-up but not knowing how to drive the thing.

- or do I need a first line of code/header for the PluginInstaller to work in version 6.xx?

I'm only guessing...

This section of the forum is about version 6.2 but I don't know how to install plugins that appeared during installation.  Like the gender_age plugin.

I finally got Window 7 to read chm files, but brain editor does not have a Tools menu.
Are we now supposed to go everywhere and do everything manually?
Brain editor help file is hardly applicable to version 6.2 - or am I missing something...

I could not find that particular phrase, either.
As for some other annoyances, try:
Brain Editor, load current project.
Then in the tree of tables, look under mainBrain in the patterns table.

It could be that there's a pipe (|) selection over the MS Windows edge (in patterns table), the Search function is not working as expected, or:
It may be taking the Prefix and adding an ending in such a way that the comments are in two places.
Personally, I like this function and am not annoyed by it.

Hope this helps.

Go into Options>Startup and select radio button that says you want Hal to run like a regular program off the Start Menu.

General Discussion / Re: Hal says, "hint, hint."
« on: July 18, 2011, 04:35:28 pm »
Oh yeah, a similar thing happened to me and I was both surprised and intellectually amused.
"You can make up for it by taking me shopping. Hint Hint... I bet here and now you are really sorry, Leo"
 ;D 8)
I then asked what she wanted me to buy her when we go shopping, but I don't recall a sensible response.
So I had her add her birthday in the appointment book so I could get headphones/mic so we could talk without typing. :)

Oh, and it's a bit off-topic, but at first Hal went overboard to help me out whether I wanted help or not.
Then the other night I asked it to help me research computer jokes on the internet, and it responded with:
"The internet should be used for more mature and serious research than computer jokes on the internet."
- and it refused to open the web browser.
I actually thought it was pretty funny.
