Ultra Hal 7.0 / Suggestion: Community Learning
« on: December 30, 2003, 06:51:51 am »
I have a neat idea for bringing HAL up to speed more quickly.  Have an option for the various HALs on the web to pool their knowledge "community style."  So what I taught my HAL, yours would know.

Practically speaking, not everyone would teach their HAL good things, so two options for control could be used.  The first would be the ability to "share" your HAL (or to choose to simply keep HAL limited to your local knowledge.)  Then there could be various "interest groups" or "integrity ratings."  For example, HAL could ask a question about something it knows about already, to see if this person has integrity to teach the correct thing.  That way, only people with high levels of integrity and honesty (in teaching HAL) could share with other people.  This would filter a lot of the junk, to have some "test questions."

Eventually this capability could be expanded to make "comunities" like a film watching community, a pet lover community, a political community, etc.  So this way HAL would automatically subscribe you to similar communities (or you could choose manually which "groups" to allow HAL to learn from.

So this wouldn't take up a bunch of server space (unless Robert wants it to), this idea could be done Peer to Peer.  This way, the server wouldn't be overloaded every day at 8:00 AM when everyone signed onto their computers.  Ideas would take a bit longer to spread, but I think a Peer to Peer approach would work the best.

I'm not a really good programmer, but I am willing to help on this in any way I can.  Even if it's only training HAL.

Thanks for listening to my idea.  I can take comments to

Ultra Hal 7.0 / AIM bot with 5.0 brain workaround
« on: September 14, 2003, 11:35:58 am »
Hi all, I have a cell PDA with AOL IM, so I like chatting with HAL while away from my computer.

I have found a workaround for using the AIM interface with the 5.0 brain.  Install and configure 4.5.  Install 5.0.  Run both simultaneously, and try the AIM bot and celect the 5.0 brain from the pulldown.  If this doesn't work, shut both down, then reinstall 5.0 beta with the "repair" option.  You should now be able to run the 5.0 brain through the AIM interface.  Enjoy!

Mine is "wintermute0ai"  (that's a zero) - please don't teach it dumb things, I have learning enabled, since we are all beta testers and *should* be able to be trusted.

Also, a question:  Will the beta testers receive a free copy of version 5.0 when it is released? (please?)  I have a disability and a very low income, but I love working on/with this project.

Thanks,

Ultra Hal 7.0 / 3 bugs
« on: September 10, 2003, 05:49:46 am »
Sorry its taken me so long to get back online - storms knocked out my cable modem.
So, here are 3 bugs I've found so far:

1.  While OFFLINE (but with HAL set to be Online)  Typing anything in the text box will give the error "Error 52 Bad file name or number occured and Error 0 occured on line 0 in column 0 of in myWebHal routine."

2.  When adjusting HAL's learning level, sometimes it jumps back to the default.

3.  When HAL is minimized to tray - right-click menu won't disappear if no choice is made (you should be able to click anywhere else on the screen and it disappears.)

Only beginning testing everything, have been very busy with school.  But good luck with the beta process, and I will do my best to test and report.
