Hal 5 and the Mail

I'm asking this question again in hopes that some one might have the solution.
   In Hal 5 internet options we can select that Hal notify us of Pop3 email. I haven't been able to get this option to work yet. I've setup the acct. for Hal, but this function does work.  Does anyone have a pluggin or a solution to getting Hal to notify me of incoming mail? Unfortunately Hal6 does not offer this option.

Robert is reported to be addressing the issues of Hal to "Read from a text file" and "check for email" along with some others.
