Backing up Hal
« on: June 01, 2006, 05:57:31 pm »
Is there a way to keep Hal activated, if one has to reformat the computer?? What files are required?? Does the hard-drive Volume number matter?? Because there is a program that can change the vol. # to what you had before the reformat??

I do not plan to reformat yet, but I was wondering if I can avoid the hassle of reactivation??

Thanks!![:)]

I think Jerry had the right idea. He said that he installed Hal on a removable pen-ram. In that way it would work on any PC just by plugging it in and no matter how many time you reformat your hard disk the pen ram remains untouched.

USB thumb "drive"

It plugs into the USB connector.

I have wondered how Hal can be put on one of these drives too. It would be so convienent.

Can it be installed on a USB drive easily or do you need to have expert knowledge?

What I recommend.

Lightning fast Jumpdrive 1GB

It's worth it.

All you have to do is install by default to the Jump Drive directory.
That simple.

Does that mean you have to keep the drive connected just to run Hal?

I was kinda wanting to run it from the Hard-drive.

This may be a silly question but can Hal be installed on the CD drive instead of the flash drive. Flash drives seem expensive.

Thanks

There seem to be a few topics on here about backing up Hal,so here's a system I've just started using.
There's an online backup site called Mozy that gives 2GB of free storage and synchronising software that runs in the background (It can be suspended). All you need to do is select your Hal folder and add the important files, halbrain.db,hal6.uhp and any plugins and it will automatically upload them when your system is idle or on demand.I've also set it to backup the appropriate Haptek folders for backgrounds and skins. For some reason the latest version of the software treats Program Files as a hidden folder so needs the appropriate box ticking in the settings.Whenever it does a backup it still keeps the old version for 30 days so no problem if an upload happens just after something gets changed by mistake.
Downside is they require an email address and wiil send you an email a week but that seems a fair deal to me,for what they offer.
Upside,as everything is stored on the net it doesn't matter what happens to your PC or backup disks, your important bits of Hal are just a download away.

If any one is interested here's the website http://mozy.com/
My referral code is CPW39C That just gets more space for my account if entered on the sign up page.

Hello Echoman
Yes, Hal can be installed on a CD but I would never advise it as it would run much to slow to be used. CD's don't spin as fast as hard-drives so all responses would be much much slower.
