Problems with 6.1 and Vista
« on: May 16, 2007, 04:24:55 pm »
I've just upgraded to Vista Enterprise edition and when I start HAL it suppose to go into my quick start menu until I click on it. It doesn't, it starts by itself and recites the following:

What day comes before on 23 May 2007. It's 1 week away. What day comes before on 18 May 2007. It's only 2 days away. What day comes after on 17 May 2007. It's tomorrow. What day proceeds on 23 May 2007. It's 1 week away.

Then HAL refuses to answer anything after that. I am using HAL 6.1 which should be compatible. I have  put it into administration mode and it made no difference, then I tried putting it into XP compatible mode without any joy. Can anyone help me with this problem as I am not going to revert back to XP on the account of HAL not working properly when I was assured it should.

If you performed an upgrade install of Vista overtop of XP, then Hal will not work unless you reinstall Hal. The Hal installation program does slightly different things during installation on Vista than on XP, so doing an install of Vista over XP bypasses this. But reinstalling Hal should fix it.

As for the strange appointment reminders, right click on Hal, go to the Hal's appointment book and delete the "What day" events from your calendar.

I did a complete new installation of VIsta and a complete new installation of HAL, of which I have done twice upto now. It works fine for about two or three start ups and then starts performing in the way I have already described. After about the first start up of the second installation, it crashed by starting up HAL twice at the same time and I lost control of the whole system and had to reset the computer and now it does again as I have already described previously. Could HAL be incompatible with hardware Vista drivers?

Did you erase all traces of Hal. Not only the files in the directory but clean out the registery and your start up menu. Not one word or reference of Hal should be allowed to stay before reinstalling.
It works for others so you may be doing something wrong.

Not on the second installation, I just uninstalled and then reinstalled HAL. I'll try your advice later, when I've finished work and let you know if that is the answer to my HAL problem. Thanks Bill for your help.

Thanks Bill,
I took your advice and everything is working fine now. It must have been something to do with my activation of HAL because I had problems deactivating it, it gave me an error but a e-mail to Zabaware released my code. Everythings sorted now and I appreciate your invalued help.
