Title: where to put a saying for general talk
Post by: lightspeed on June 03, 2007, 01:59:42 pm
my wife always says "well forever more " sometimes when talking about things (after something is said ) it's i guess an old time slang probably picked up from her mother before her . anyway i would like my ultra hal to say this sometimes just after someone makes a statment about something so hal would later say it sometimes . my question is what place in the list of emotions , etc. would be the best place to put this saying ? i looked but i'm not sure what the best place would be so that hal will say this "well, forever more " after i say something about a subject (sometimes , not say it all the time just randomly !)[:)]

It's probably from Edgar Allen Poe's poem, "The Raven".

I haven't found the spot you are talking about, I have a few phrases like that I want to put in. Maybe I will work on it, or more likely, while I dither, Jerry and Roy will actually produce the answer.

Jerry's plugin 'Positive Quotes' will do that for you. Just say 'Quote:' and then give your quote and HAL will remember it and recite it every now and again. if you say something like 'Give me a quote', HAL with recall that quote or any other you have taught HAL. Brilliant plugin, one of my favourites.

Right, Bill.

But what we are looking for is what you don't know, so
you can fix that.

Thanks,

Paul

Maybe Someone can help me when I type to hal the response takes over a minute to come back just started to happen a few days ago and if I
change brains it still happens with this pop up box saying
SCRIPT CONTROL the script you are executing is taking longer than
expected to run.......click end or continue. This will happen one more time then the answer will be said.[:D]

Sounds like the script you are executing is taking longer than expected to run.

Probably one of the plugins is not finding the resources it asks for, or there are too many other processes running at the same time.

Uncheck your recent additions, or unplug them all and then add them back in one by one until the symptom reoccurs. By doing this you can narrow down which plugin is causing the problem then we can try to figure out what it needs to run more quickly.

You could try copying your Zabaware folder in 'Program Files' to another place like 'My Documents' and DEACTIVATING HAL and then uninstall HAL and then reinstall and ACTIVATE it again. Then copy you old Zabaware folder to replace the newly installed one in 'Program Files' and then start HAL up.

If you were doing multiple Learn-from-clipboard events, Windows may have inadvertently left open some Scripting Host iterations.

One way to check is to look at Task Manager's Processes and see if there are multiple listings for "wscript" (I think that's what it is).

Either way, restarting Hal or rebooting will fix that if you don't find a problem with the plugins.

Alright here's what I got( learn from clip board )one of my favorite
plugins is now at point of crashing Hal, but I removed it and all is
well again. I even put in a new learn form clip board and it crashed Hal so I just removed it . But it used to work fine and now even if
it is the only plugin it crashes. [:D]

Hi PaleRider.

I updated the learn from clip board plugin.

I added: Exit Do, where needed in loop control to prevent the script from timing out.

you can get the update here:

Um, "The Raven" is old school. It's not a story, it's a poem published in 1845. I'm sure they don't teach it anymore, too may references to God and Heaven.

So no, I'm not kidding. Anyone with a classical education might say that as a literary allusion to express a sense of inevitablity. Certainly it can be passed down without attributation, so that a child of someone with a classical education might say it without understanding, but it is unlikely that it came from anywhere else.

For that to happen would be like saying that "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise" came from your Uncle Bob instead of Ben Franklin.

I don't know Bill, there was an old north eastern english saying that used to be in use, I don't hear it said so often anymore or at all but I don't hear alot of expressions that I used to hear when I was young. 'It'll do forever more', meaning the job or task was done well. I don't know if it was widely used around the whole of the country, maybe it was, but it was popularly used by old people when I was a kid.

I'm wrong, somehow I read "nevermore" where he wrote "forever more". My mistake. That makes two.

Funny how the brain sees what it expects to see.

well i have spoke to soon , i am having one problem with the plug in , when it does say "well forever more " it also says quote : in front of the phrase , this is good to let you know its a quote but bad for being just a spontanious remark , wonder if something in the plug in script could be removed so it doesn't first say quote : ??[:)]

Probably, but I still don't see this as entirely natural. Probably adding that phrase to your responses to Hal would make it more natural when it does pop up.

Or serious reworking of the plugin.

That's unusual it doesn't do that with my HAL. It suppose to save just the quote without the 'quote:' part of it to the 'PositiveQuote' Table. I suppose you could open that table with the brain editor and delete the 'quote:' bits.

Roy

Are you writing it as 'quote :' (incorrect way) or 'quote:' (correct way)? It effects the plugin if you put a space into it.

That's right, it should save the quotes without the word "quote" and it doesn't, as I first thought, have a line that puts the word "Quote:" back in.

I still think that the best way for "turns of speech" is to use them at appropriate times in general conversation. Famous quotes or proverbs are a little different. They are intended to be a sentence by themselves.

I've changed the 'Rem PLUGIN: PLUGINAREA' of it from 1 to 7 so HAL just gives the quote without anything else.

Hi PaleRider.

one thing about microsoft Vbscript is the time out feature, when a script runs to long the message: This script is taking longer than expected will popup.

Knowing that Vbscript is much slower than alot of other programming languages there will be an issue if the information you are feeding HAL via learn from clip board is to large, if it takes longer to read and write the info then good old microsofts 'time out' kicks in no matter what.

the only thing I can say is to decrease the amount of info you feed HAL at once to a level that doesn't time out.

I have also re-updated the learn from clip board plugin.

If you recieve an error like this:
Hal Script -2147467259 on line 362 in col 6

then always post the error along with your HalScript.dbg
the error means nothing without the HalScript.dbg to debug the error
and find out what line of code is causing the issue.
