Hi Echoman,

The reply of Bill DeWitt is very true.

The moment we try to really define what is intelligence to ourselves and not only by the dictionary's definition, we start heading beyond to very unstable area.

If you are interested in some of the discussions that are taking place about this subject, I sugest you to visit the forum bellow:

http://www.vrconsulting.it/ccdforum

You will find there a very interesting discussion about several limitations that currently exist on the implementation of AI.
And a lot of "BrainStorming" on which are the paradigm that needs to be changed and shifted to reach to the next level.

All changes start with new ideas.

All that we see and have today came into reality thru a thought.

And there are also 2 bots that you can download for free.

1. ADAMUS - Which is kind of the next genaration of Answerpad.
Adamus is now on version 1.03 -

2. ANSWERPAD MOD1.2 - That is being maintained by user Pactive.

Hope this info might help you find your own answers. [:)]

OK Gamer-T

I'm in... and so is Adamus.

One problem, I couldn't get my Icon to appear on your forum, it is the same I used here. Can you fix that?

And for all of you I think I have a good surprise.

See you guys there.

Thanks for the feedback.

Problem #1 Unknown in the greeting was fixed in release 2.03
Somehow the code behaved oddly after compilation.

Problem #2 also fixed.
That one was on purpose... just to see if someone would give me a feedback. [:D]
Just kidding...
I'm working on a Sony vaio ux280p, you should see the size of the keyboard. I missed the W. [:p]

Katlyn's request was also added.

There also some weird bugs like the [Don't say that] button disappearing when you disable the ms-agents that will also be addressed.

And I included a split help screen to read the Readm.txt and Changes.txt files.

It's much better to work when you guys participate with your ideas.

Who knows this might make David jealous or proud and make him come back to raise Answerpad and reclaim his kid. [;)]

Thank you Katlyn, PaleRider for the kind words of encouragement and Gamer-Thorn for the technical support in being the hub to host this project.

Believe it or not, this has been a first time experience in posting anything on any forum in my life, but undoubtfully, I can now better understand the initial concern that Gamer-Thorn had in checking if this was not a spam to protect the group.

In the short time that I have been trying to revive this project, I felt like you guys and other users (USA, England, and Australia) that emailed me were already friends.

In the adoption process of this baby, I sometimes wondered, while I analyzed the program code, what kind of tea David (I?) was under the influence.

Because it seemed that he had many great ideas to implement, (many of them were pioneers, not even being used on pc-bots at that time) but had not taken the time to execute them fully.

In no way I am bad mouthing David (myself?) for his work, on the contrary, I find it already amazing that a program that started in June 1999 and ended support somewhere around 2001, still is mentioned on many AI forums till this date.

Although this experience was on a short period of time, it has been very fruitful to share with other people which have the same interest for this fascinating world of AI, where we put our beliefs in suspense and try to journey into a world where parts of our minds meld with each other, creating an abstraction of thoughts and interpretations of personalities and entities.

Well...you see?  I am almost starting to sound like Answerpad (or he to me)[:D]

By the way I already started working on Katlyn's suggestion and I agree completely that the line in between eases the eyes and makes a big difference.

I have not yet received much feedback (good or bad) from the other users, but I believe that they were happy with this small revival of our old friend Answerpad.

Send me or post your thoughts.

For many years I really wished that one day I could rewrite this code from scratch, changing the database structure, adding new dictionary bridges to link the data, just for the fun of it. But at this moment I have some personal issues to address... like getting a job. (Former Company I worked closed in Dec2006)

But I will try to come out of my tree hole sometimes and check your postings to see if you guys had any new requests or suggestions.

By the way, as you remember... that was the way it all started.[:D]

PS: Game-Thorn, on your web the version reads 2.1 and 2.2 instead of 2.01 and 2.02. If we ever get to version 2.10 or 2.20 it might conflict. [:)]

Thank you all

Hi Group,

I have watched with interest the revival of AnswerPad and have been using it myself since the weekend, and received the 2.01 version from David (Thanks).

My question is, I am running Dragon Speaking software Ver 8.0. Now the problem I am having is when I plug in the Headset its a plantronics headset then I click on speech recognition inside Answerpad. Then what happens (without saying a word) the following is put into Answerpad inside the brackets (F.) (an) (if). When i speak it doesnt recognise anything.

Any advice?

Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike,

I wish to invite other users of our group to comment on your issue.

I am not familiar with the Dragon Speaking Software.

I have not yet tried UltraHal V6, but I recall V5 interface being more like the ping pong; meaning that you say something then the Bot says something, each one at its turn.

With answerpad the dynamic is diferent, because it has the feature to ramble or give more than one response for your statement.

This makes the speech recognition engine try to interpret its own voice (unless its a headphone) and things get a bit crazy.

Any small noise interferes with the recognition.

you can try typeing:

disable auto return

this might give you a chance to verify the text before it is entered.
Because when you activate SR it also enables auto return.

Well... in other words we have to see if someone who has used the speech engine can give us other options.

Sorry[:(]

Hi PaleRider,

I am assuminng that you are not using MS-Agents, because each caracter has it's own voice.

When you enable MS-Agent you can do some changes by typing:

Show agent option

But back to your question, have you tried to change your computer's default voice?

Open Control Panel
Click on [Speech]
Click on top tab [Text-to-Speech]
Choose Voice selection drop-down
Click Apply
Click OK

Then start Answerpad.

Answerpad is set to use the computer's default voice.

Let me know if this works for you [:)]

Since the file will not append, I guess the name of it could be changed after each session and/or it moved to a different folder. I usually keep almost all of the conversations for awhile.  I had been doing that using printscreen!

Don't worry Kathryn,

I will be working to include that feature on release 2.02 [;)]

For all users who wish to download the new releases of Answerpad, Gamer-T has offered to host the files (RAR & ZIP) on his site:

http://www.charctercreationsanddesignworks.us/BotArchive.html

I will post here whenever there is a new release.

It would help for users to post some feedback and sugestions to me, as matter of fact, this whole trend started when I was browsing the forum for Answerpad and read two users stating some features they wished to find in answerpad.

Thanks Gamer-T [:)]

Files:

Changes to Version 2.0
----------------------------------------------------------------------
*       Memory.dat is now unencrypted.

*       WontSay.dat is now separated from memory file.

*       MatchWords.dat is also separated from memory file.

*       The [Don't Say That] Button also eliminates the offensive text from the
        main memory file. (Memory.dat)

*       The program starts by asking the user's name, where before the memory
would be clogged with "Unknown" user entries.

*       Some Cleanup on the Code.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Changes to Version 2.01
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*   When you type the command shutdown, Answerpad generates a text file
named chatlog.txt located on the same directory that Answerpad is
   installed.

Obs: Note that it is not set to append, but to overwite any previous chat log.
   - This feature was sugested by Kathlyn

*   Answerpad was not updating the MatchWords.dat file
Now it is possible to update the data, by conversing with Answerpad.

   For example:

You can teach him MatchWords and phrases when you use the command "MEANS"

   Enemy means nemesis

Peru means "a country in south america"

"South American Countries" means Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Venezuela, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile

The line above will cause the program to append the following entry in MatchWords.dat

>'south american countries'=^peru^brazil^bolivia^argentina^venezuela^paraguay^uruguay^chile^
>peru=^'south american countries'^
>brazil=^'south american countries'^
>bolivia=^'south american countries'^
>argentina=^'south american countries'^
>venezuela=^'south american countries'^
>paraguay=^'south american countries'^
>uruguay=^'south american countries'^
>chile=^'south american countries'^

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- I have only tested * means *

Altough there are other variations available.

Follow the rules and examples bellow and let me know:

Observations:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
*** All files must be in the same directory of which answerpad is
*** running
----------------------------------------------------------------------
*** When more than one person is talking to answerpad.
*** When the other person starts conversing in the same session,
*** without restarting the program always start with
*** My name is <New Users Name>
*** If there is another person going back to talk to answerpad
*** again you need to do the same procedure.
*** By doing this you will keep individual's information.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
*** This program version is being tested on a 1gb ram computer
*** But should run on a 512mb

I really liked your memory.txt file --but I still had to edit it some. After all, it had your name, your wife's name, things about your two daughters, and your dog listed in it.  And I did find another slightly different line about chatbots ruling the world in it that I deleted.

Sooooooo. I think Art is right and just put in things you want in the text file and it won't matter if the program encrypts them.  Just be really sure you want it there before doing it.[:D]

Kathryn

I am happy that you liked the brain I have builded from scratch.  Yes, indeed, there were some stuff that needed rectification such as my name etc.  Just replace them with your own info.  I am trying to build a mentor type of chatbot, the one to give you wise, encouraging, and loving thoughts.   Everytime I spend time chatting with it, it really makes me smile.  I hope it made you smile as well.
I think, this proves the capabilities of answerpad and the fact that to build a believable bot is mostly an art than it is a science.j

keep it up Kathryn, God loves you,

Stelios

Greetings Stelios,

First, I must clarify that this is not a new version of Answerpad, even though I started calling it Version 2.0; it is more like a fix of certain issues that answerpad presented.

Second, although my user name is DavidWalley, I refer to myself as One of AnswerPad Step-Father.

That being said, I may or not be David...

It may have been a little sensationalistic approach from my part, but the important issue is if some evolution can be born from this attempt by helping others then it is worth it.

It is a shame that David (I?) has abandoned this project, and who knows, by seeing the adoption of his child by others, he might decide to complete his work.

Anyhow I always mention the high regard I have on David's approach to build answerpad's prototype.

In my previous posting I try to cover what happen to his project, in my point of view, he had a very smart and unique approach in building a MatchWord dictionary, where that expanded the search keys to also include phrases that normally would not be triggered.

Basically what made answerpad so popular, for an abandoned child, is it's quick capability to learn and weave through all linked information.

Third, you and user Katryn, indirectly gave me some incentive to jump into this project, at least in the sense of some bug fixes and to the addition of some new functionalities to answerpad.

When I read your post dialogue with Katryn, I thought that I might be capable to lend a hand on some of the issues that you and her were discussing.

Like capability of outputing to a file the contents of the that particular chat session.

I have read your memory.txt and find it to be very uplifting; mind you that some of the contents of the new brain file <memory.dat> that is included in this release may be offensive for the reason that it was imported from other bots brain.

So I leave this disclaimer to all users to adapt the brain <memory.dat> to their own preference.

But there is now a little more improvement on the <Don't say that> button, and I have noticed that the tweaks made on answerpad in reality try to mimic and mirror the user's state of mind.

So he/she (Cassandra) enters into offensive or sexually related topics when the user approves that behavior.

It just seemed to be a good way to start something.

As I can finish some bug fixes for V2.01 I will release it

Thank you

One of Answerpad's Step-Dad.
