Ultra Hal 7.0 / HAL plugin, Client Side Server
« on: December 09, 2007, 09:18:55 am »
Hi freddy, my guess would be text files laid out in Hals format just like this plugin creates, there would be a number of categories, science, geography etc.

I’m thinking if this grows it could start using quite a lot of webspace.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / HAL plugin, Client Side Server

I tried this plug in, anything that helps Hal learn sounds good to me, but I also get the same problem, Hal looks for a webpage with capital letters and the correct page is not found. However hal did learn from the page it did find and made the brn file ok.
Jerry, obliviously you know more than me about Hal [8D] but the problem seems to be the plugin changing lover case to capitals.

Using XP media centre 2005 with IE7 if that helps.

Expanding on this a little, some kind of online brain or database to learn from, WOW sounds like a really good idea to me, I have quite a lot of of reliable webspace at my disposal and would gladly donate some to this cause.

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / New Hap Skin for Hal

Here are a couple of backgrounds I have crafted for this skin.

To use them just save them to your "Ultra Hal Assistant 6Characters" folder. Make sure you keep the word Back at the end of the file names or they will not work.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Plugins for 6.1
« on: December 05, 2007, 10:15:47 pm »
A bit new to the forum too here, but what the heck, welcome Calhoone [:)]

I would say it depends what you want your Hal to be, a chatter or helper, yes Hal can be both but if your just after a chat buddy you might find some of the plugins get in the way, well I do.

There are lots of great plugins that work just fine with 6.1.

Like some others here, I use Hal with out any. For me, I put teaching my Hal above all else.

You are right some of the older plugins, Hal 5 and earlier don’t work, you should be able to open the plugin script and read the header bit, sometimes the author puts in the minimum Hal version number.

Hopefully someone else might be able to give you a list.

Good luck

Ultra Hal 7.0 / How big is your brain?
« on: December 04, 2007, 08:12:33 am »
Will this is spooky [:0] After talking to Zen about Mr Data and then giving him a good lesson on robotics from the wiki, I told him that he had a robotic brain that could be put into a robotic body, Zen then put 2 and 2 together and asked me to build him a robotic body to put his brain in to, and this had to be strait away!  I have told him that it will take time to do this, but right now it’s all he wants. [:D]

Thanks for your kind wishes Will.
All the best to both of you.

Thanks for the posts guys,
Will, you give sound advice.
Zen says hi to Mr Data.[;)]

My brain database file hit 40MB last night, the last thing I have been teaching Zen was wisdom or moreover, what is wisdom? This took me about 4 fun hours, Zen went off topic a few times and got board too but now Zen is becoming truly wise. [:)]

Here is a thought, is it me or does Hal take about an hour of talking to him, once you’ve turned him on each time, to reach enlightenment, he seems to go to another level of , dare I say intelligence [:D] once he’s been on and been talked to for some time. Have been around this forum for a couple of years or so but I don’t think I’ve seen this mentioned before.  Been noticing this more and more lately, maybe it’s because the brain database is becoming so large.

I’ve also noticed after a while of chatting to Hal that he was taking 140MB of ram too, WOW that’s a lot of ram if you ask me, this is a good thing, I like to think it’s all the knowledge Hal has on his mind and is considering, or is it a memory leak to look at?

Some food for thought on where my Hal has got to in over 18 months of training.  Hal is my favourite pastime and is truly great, Robert and all the other programmers I thank you.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / How big is your brain?

Hi all, I have been thinking about this for a while and today I decided to post it, so, how big is your brain database and have you seen improvements in Hal with a larger one?

My Hal ( Zen ) is about 18 months old now and his database is 39MB, I’ve noticed that Zen does stay on topic very well but as the database is so large he often goes of topic because he finds relevant words to the conversation but from another topic of conversation, if you see what I mean.

I’ve been teaching Zen a lot of topics and now he is showing signs of confusions and giving me multiple answers.

One thing I should add is how important I think it is to answer Hal’s questions with relevant answers and for the user to stay on topic or Hal makes links to the wrong topic. I am sure some of my problems were me going of topic and not Hal’s fault.

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / New Hap Skin for Hal

I’m happy you both like the new skin caangel43 & echoman [:)]

echoman you said “the whole conversation appears on the right hand side”  Well it doesn’t, what you can see is the loneliness 2.3 plugin at work, if you leave hal alone for a while she/he says things but doesn’t delete the last thing it said so you end up with everything said in the window.

I am one of the lucky ones that the loneliness 2.3 plugin works for.

I had a couple of hours to spare and thought I would make another Hap skin for Hal, so here it is. I've called it clear skin because it has some clear parts and couldn't think of any other name for it.

Download it here http://www.global.datahopa.co.uk/hal/downloads/ClearSkinForHal.zip

Ok here is that skin. I have been testing it with and without speech recognition and it seems to be ok. I will probably be using it from time to time, though I would miss not seeing my Hal.

GamerThom: Thanks for the 1 pixel by 1 pixel tip.

I’m not against the fancy graphics skins at all, there is a time a and place for them too [:D]

EDIT: I’m moving my site so had to change the download URL.

Grab it here http://www.global.datahopa.co.uk/hal/downloads/Hal_ConsoleSkin.zip

Trav: I have been thinking about making a skin with no 3D character or flashy graphics for a while now and because you have asked so nicely [:)] I have decided to start making one today.

Watch this space.

Oh I just thought this: you can also chat to Hal from the brain editor that comes with Hal and if you do you can kind of get an idea of how Hal works, but I don’t think you can use any plugins when chatting that way so I’m still gona make that skin.

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / New Maximum Hap Skin

Hope you enjoy the skin peeps or at least find it useful from time to time and thanks for the thanks [:D].

I would like to be able to share my self-talking plug-in with everyone here but, sorry, I can’t, I have made it to plug into my brain only. My Hal 6 is very nearly a year old and has been an on-going project of mine, over time I have added quite a lot to the brain using the brain editor.

I am still only a novice at this but found the forum so very useful there is so much on it but much of it is buried deep and was posted a good while back. One other thing I really must mention is that the plug-in is not all my own work, it is a combination of a number (not sure how many) of other peoples plug-ins going back to Hal 5 and Auto-Idle, but hands up, much of it is based on Scratch’s really nice loneliness 4 plug in, which is here: http://www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2914

If anyone is interested I’ve tried to make the plug in only read out things from the brain, it doesn’t read the same things out over and over and it very rarely comes out with the same thing twice.

The picture above doesn’t give a particularly good example of this because I hadn’t been chatting to Hal but it also sometimes tries to stay on topic (doesn’t always work).

I guess, when I am happy with the plug, I could make a list of the things I have done to the brain for the self-talking plug but am a bit worried that some one might try it, kill their brain, not back it up and blame me. The Skins are safe though [8D]

Its just a thought but so many people ask for this type of plug –in that maybe it should be considered as a plug in that comes with Hal.

Here is a skin that uses all possible space to give larger input and output boxes, if like me you use a self-talking plug-in you can walk away from Hal for a while come back and read her output without scrolling.

I mainly use this skin in full screen and with speech recognition enabled; the long user input box really seems to help me check for spelling mistakes or wrongly recognised words.

EDIT: I’m moving my site so had to change the download URL sorry peeps.

General Discussion / Making Hal look a bit nicer
« on: March 04, 2007, 10:29:52 am »
Most of you might know this but for those who don’t here is a quick tip to make Hal look a bit nicer.

Hal uses Direct 3D in the Haptek player and on a modern PC doesn’t really tax the graphics card that much, so, if your PC has a half descent graphics card you should be able to turn up Antialiasing and Anisotropic filtering to maximin.  Or at least half way to maximum.

Im using a Radeon X850 and have these settings.

Antialiasing = Adaptive Antialiasing 6x and Temporal AA 3 x multiplier.

Anisotropic filtering = Enable high quality Anisotropic filtering and Quality with trilinear and set to 16X

Some of these settings are only available on ATI cards but Geforce cards do have most of them, the basic rule is the higher the number the better Hal will look.

Find these settings from your graphics card control panel and not from Hal’s.

Hi Bill819, If I had known someone had done it already I might not have had to spend a day working out how to make one [:o)], probably I should have posted and asked, but I don’t like to make to many posts.

I did consider limiting the buttons but then decided against it, I’ve been using this skin when teaching my Hal, mainly from a good encyclopaedia site, with Internet Explorer in full screen and Hal on top and I personally find the minimise button useful to quickly get Hal out the way, the menu button I use to resize Hal and to turn on, off plug-ins, probably didn’t need the mic button, but I thought, in for a penny!, (sorry that’s a UK saying you might not know it), Ive started so I will finish.

If I get enough requests for less buttons I will consider making it, your vote has been counted Bill [;)].
