Missing Voices
« on: February 14, 2008, 05:47:38 am »
Hi. I don't know if I'm asking this question in the right place. I've been using Hal Text to speech reader for a couple of years now. I use it to proof-read my writings. I've always used the Mike voice. I got a new computer in December and could only get Vista. When I installed the reader on it the only voice available in it is Microsoft's Anna. There is no way to teach it things. What's wrong? There are no other voices available and that voice can't be taught with options.

Is there anything at all I can do about this?

Alley,

Although you can read through the section below which I took from Microsoft's website, it basically says that the ANNA voice replaces the SAM voice from XP. Sam is not available in Vista and Anna is not available for XP.

While microphone training should work fine with Vista for voice recognition, there may be a problem with Hal's Text-to-Speech Reader.

I'd suggest an email to Robert Medeksza (find him by searching members list at top of page).

Sorry for not being much help....

SAPI 5 Voices
Microsoft Sam (Speech Articulation Module) is a commonly-shipped SAPI 5 voice. In addition, Microsoft Office XP and Office 2003 installed L&H Michael and Michelle voices. The SAPI 5.1 SDK installs 2 more voices, Mike and Mary. Windows Vista includes Microsoft Anna which replaces Microsoft Sam. Anna is designed to sound more natural and offer greater intelligibility. Several multilingual voices are also included in localized versions of Windows Vista. Microsoft Anna is also installed on Windows XP by Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006 and later versions.

Speech functionality in Windows Vista
Windows Vista includes a number of new speech-related features including:

Speech control of the full Windows GUI and applications
New tutorial, microphone wizard, and UI for controlling speech recognition
New version of the Speech API runtime: SAPI 5.3
Built-in updated Speech Recognition engine (Version 8)
New Speech Synthesis engine and SAPI voice Microsoft Anna
Managed code speech API (codenamed SpeechFX)
Speech recognition support for 8 languages at release time: U.S. English, U.K. English, traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Japanese, German, French and Spanish, with more language to be released later.
Microsoft Agent most notably, and all other Microsoft speech applications use SAPI 5.
In the world of AI it's the thought that counts!
