Hal "Not Responding" on WinXPsp2 computer
« on: January 29, 2006, 07:49:44 pm »
I've had Hal running on my Win2k machine and now I've replaced it with an XP Pro box. I installed Hal and set it up to use Neospeech Kate but, although Kate appears to be doing fine, Hal is "Not Responding" in the task manager and there is no icon in the system tray. I've de-installed and re-installed with the same effect. HELP!!!

I'm not sure since I can't actually run the program. This is not Ultra Hal Assistant but just the Hal Reader. The date on the exe is 1/11/2002, the readme file says that Hal is version 1.0 Copyright 2002, and the CD has files dated as late as 11/12/2004.

Yes, that's version 1.0 of the Hal Text-to-Speech Reader.
The file date is correct and the directory/folder should
contain 13 files.

Make sure you don't have any other voice based apps running
at the same time.

I recall a few members having some isolated problems with
one of the NeoSpeech voices and whether or not there is a
work around for it, I can't say.

Hopefully someone more up to speed in this area will offer
a suggestion to your problem, otherwise you can always use
the SEARCH feature at the top right to look for Neospeech,
Reader, etc.

Although there's a wealth of information in this forum
sometimes it takes a little digging to locate it.

Post again if your problem goes unanswered after a week or
so.

Good luck!

Bump, for what it's worth.

RANT:
It's irritating to buy software and then have no help to even get it running. I've written a few software pieces but since I don't want to become responsible for the product's support, I've just made them freeware and taken a few donations if they did someone good. When I pay for software, there's an implicit warranty that, although it may not perform in the manner I'd like, it will at least run on my pc.

Does anyone know of a free (I've paid enough on this project already) utility that will let me paste text and have my Neospeech voices save it as a .wav file? I thought XP would have something like this built in but I can't find anything.

Thanks, Doc! That's just what I needed to save text to wav files. I wonder why Zabaware didn't put that in the shortcut menus? I've attached it here for others that can't find it. I'd still like to know why my Hal Reader won't run???

Even if you get the program to work, then some options still might be unavailable. I never found out why and as far as I know neither did Medeksza. Part of the problem is that NeoSpeech never gave any support and has been taken over long ago.
