Mark,
did you purchase the newly accepted N protocol access point or did you have an existing G protocol access point?

do secure your wireless, 64bit will suffice as a deturant and allow maximum throughput (not having to code and de-code 128)

remember "War driving" isn't illegal but logging on is.
[:D][:D][8D][:D][:D]

oh yea, don't do "ADHOC" that just makes your computer an access point.

I got G. I also use the MAC address for security. I had trouble getting WEP to connect.

Mark,
G does fine, IMO N broadcasts too far for home use
The Wired Equvalent Privacy Key in 64bit is just like any other lock it keeps honest people honest
Remembering not to adhoc is important ,, I have seen people use it because they thought it was easier but it actually opens them up to be an access point. and yes I have locked computers like that with a note saying what they did wrong[}:)][}:)][:D][}:)][}:)]

Mark,
that might be protocol not privacy

Lightspeed,
why do you get more Data throughput in wire that is twisted in more than 3 twists per in' coperating with the EM field that is created and how do you factor in impediance?[8)]

If I can figure it out, I will use WEP. But I live in a rural area, and don't suspect any "drive by" users. Maybe once I figure it out, I'll use it.

I do have a modem connected to the router, and it flashes when there is activity. If it starts flashing and my computers are off, then I'll be concerned.

(Signals have to go through my modem to my DSL line)

Although maybe they could see my files, they could not uses my internet without me knowing about it, if I am watching my modem.

If I'm away, I'll just turn off the router if  suspect  stealing.

I tried using WEP, and I could not get a connection.[V][V]

I can't explain but, isn't your modem the dsl? you can request or get a DSL modem with a wireless access point built in.

wep is a mode of connection you need to set it up with Characters

I do believe in places like AZ it is illegal to not have a secured wireless...

I got WEP working this morning. All I had to do was delete the old profile that gave me the error, and create a new profile. So, WEP and MAC are on.

Mark,
if nobody else uses your network this is an easy of maintaining your network it does MAC addressing and tracks intruders.
I had it for a while and it was fine but I am "old school" I like to address on my own.
I can't use it now because I am not the only one who uses this network I am on and it places a folder on computers that are not supposed to be on your network and tracks them. so I am SOL for now but you might find it handy, their is a trial and it is not to hard to remove what's left behind if you do not like it. It is easy though like I said
