General Discussion / Re: Guess whos back

It's actually a SERIAL adapter to connect to a COM port, not an RGB which would be for video.

This cable would enable HAL to be able to communicate to a COM port-enabled device like many of the X-10 items that are readily available for a very low cost!

eBay has LOTS of listings of folks selling all kinds of X-10 items! Some are even being sold by the pound, but be careful of what you're buying.

Older desktop units and tower systems had COM ports but the transition to Laptops had the manufacturers omit them...plus the advent of the USB connections.

You might want to remain locked in the past but other things in this ever-changing universe will continue moving forward, changing & improving. Ultra Hal is one of them.

Hal has evolved over the years in many ways and has really tried to offer something for everyone.

One Does Not have to rely on the Cloud for their Ultra Hal to be operational or they can if they choose to do so.

Life is all about choices. Choice of characters, TTS voices, GUI skins, Backgrounds, Brains, Plugins, etc.

One can get a great deal from many of the user-contributed Plugins over the years to enhance Hal's ability.

Some have even created Plugins to allow Hal to collect data when Hal is not being used by the user in a chat situation. Hal will continue collecting info for use in later chats, as needed.

There is a downloaded Local Wikipedia that is full of useful data and Wordnet is extremely useful and neither of these requires Ultra Hal to be connected to the Internet or to some Cloud.

Hal is as "smart" as it has been trained to be. Garbage in...Garbage out as the old saying goes.

For Desktop use, typing to Hal usually provides better results as opposed to speaking due to a variety of possible issues. Choose wisely and teach your Hal as if it were a 5-year-old child, then after a while, it will surprise you with what it knows.

Good luck!

A good and helpful find Knight2000...nice work!!

OF course one can take advantage of Windows 10's Split Screen to easily perform this task.

Nice idea but Hal can barely determine who is who if one's webcam is running. Hand signs are way different than just speaking. I'm afraid Hal and its camera would have too much of a delay to determine all the different words, numbers, and phrases contained in the ASL. I'm sure there are probably some systems that can do what you're suggesting, but at the moment, Hal isn't one of them.

I kept hearing my mom's voice reminding me, "If you keep doing that with your eyes they're going to get stuck that way!!"  Haha...some memories stick with us...

Very nice experiment BTW.

Think back to the movie, Ai. Near the beginning, it showed lots of robots being gathered and held in captivity. Some of them had smooth heads with an internal projector that projected the facial characteristics of the robot.

There's no one best method...it's whatever works or whatever is needed.

Sorry to say but this seems to be a Microsoft issue and not an Ultrq Hal - based concern.

Apparently, you are not alone in your frustration over some of these voices but I did track down a possible lead for you.

Good luck in resolving this.

HAHAHA!!  Good one !!!  ;D ;)

Yep, if you aren't offended by at least something, then you're just not Woke enough!!! (I guess...)

OK, I read all the text in this article yet I am NOT amazed.

Maybe I just don't get the descriptions of European jawlines and olive skin enough to be totally amazed or whatever they expect of us.

Come on Robots, Y'all need to get better in a hurry cause a lot of us humans aren't going to be around a whole lot longer...

Nice but the walking still isn't smooth and fluid, extending the legs in a stride that resembles human locomotion. Maybe it'll get there in a few more months...

Glad to hear it Papasmrfe!!

Aha...for the same reason that some people collect old coins, cars or antiques...a bit of nostalgia runs in the veins for some...

However, you might wish to locate an older version of UltraHalAssistant from back in the day, thru Version 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 6.0, 6.1, 7.0, 7.5

From Win 3.1, 95, 98, ME, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, 11, and those many iterations in between.

We have reached the end! (for the moment, as brief as it may be)...

Cheers!

You can always select CLOUD if desired otherwise, your Hal conversations will remain local (confined to just your computer - Offline as they say).

Don't worry about the activation thing...not an issue any longer.

Ultra Hal 7 does not perform Speech Recognition but it does allow for Hal to "decide" and respond to your speech/voice by means of Windows Speech Recognition or Dragon Dictate.

Your choice of IBM's Via Voice is severely dated having a release date around 2002-2003 or thereabouts.  It is interesting to hear that it might still work with the latest version of Ultra Hal 7.

Hal handles memories gleaned from every conversation as well as coordinating expressions and emotions based on certain expressions or words from the User.

Hal isn't some gigantic CHATAI bot in some cloud but it is a very versatile and amazing piece of code that hundreds and hundreds of people have enjoyed for over 20 years and that's saying something!

75
You could just download the new version of Ultra Hal 7 and install it.

Then, copy over the current .db file that you are using for the brain.

The new HAL uses the C:\User\AppData\Roaming\Zabaware\Ultra Hal 7

AND

The C:\Program Files (x86)\Zabaware\Ultra Hal 7

for Ultra Hal 7 to install and use.

Your current Halbrain.db file should go in the first link (User\AppDate...etc...) location.

It should work for you and no need for the registration/move thing.

If the program asks, the website should provide an auto reg based on your password.etc. but I can't recall whether that will happen or not.

If you are still unable to get things going with the NEW Ultra Hal 7 install, just post a short message and we'll help you out.

Good luck.
