hmmm, thats getting very Matrix like.

You can do a similar thing with Hal now, albiet not to the same degree.  Say for example there is an interview with your favourite film star on the web, even better if it is in 'Question/Answer' format.  You could read this into Hal and then interview your own hero/heroine and get their genuine replies.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / How to change hair colours (ie. yes you can!)
« on: May 29, 2005, 04:21:22 pm »
I had my haptek wearing a wig made from a jpg of some lawn grass!

I had a bizzare idea to join a load of hair wigs together and make a grass skirt, but it was getting a bit late in the evening.

btw, Has anyone figured out the settings for limb movements yet?

About Heather - she's the best voice I have heard, you can downloand their software from the Bable site and hear her for 30 days.

I don't think anyone has said about this yet, but I had a slight revelation over the hair, after seeing so many people asking about different wigs.

Basically the wigs are treated as objects in just the same way as the bodies.  So if you know how to change body textures then you just apply the same principle to the hair; except refer to the hair as the object being addressed....if you need more help about using commands then there's lot's of help elsewhere for sending commands and using .HAP files.

The Recipe

a) Make up a SEPERATE SKIN for the hair as you would do for a body skin (ie. a 512x512 or 1024x1024 square jpg) in photoshop or whatever.

b) Save your new hair jpg in the folder:C:\Program Files\Haptek\player\data\standard\skins\

c)If you're using the fullBod demo she will most likely be wearing the hair5_9EXP wig, the blonde one.

d)Next you need to apply your hair texture to the 'WIG FIGURE' with this command by using a HAP file or the Console. The command 'paints' your jpeg onto the wig:

\settexture [figure=hair5_9EXP tex=[C:\Program Files\Haptek\player\data\standard\skins\myhair.jpg]]

'myhair.jpg' is the full filename of your new hair texture.

e)your character should now be sporting a new haircolor...

You'll need to do some work on the hair detail just as you would the body if you want it to be convincing.

You will probably have noticed changing the hair colour on a body skin makes no difference, thats because it is under the wig.

Hope that makes sense!!!

[ammended to include suggestions and things!, thanks]

Dr Benway, that software on the other link you were refering to does work apparently, but not with lipsync.
I got some help from Haptek, they suggest their HapAudioFactory, which sorts out the lipsync data for the Hap Engine...

FuzzieDice-- have you heard BrightSpeach demo on:

http://www.brightspeech.com/

also a very good TTS?

nice.  The english female is nice and clear too.  They advertise TTS 'pay as you go', so I guess it must be expensive. TTS pay as you go - does that seem a bit crazy?!

I'm trying to figure out (amongst other things) how to get Hal to use .ogg with lipsync.  I tried that file you posted and it worked but any ideas on how to get the ogg files encoded in the first place?

It's wierd isn't it?  I must admit I was a bit freaked out when by accident I ended up with two characters in the player.

The original character just looked at me like it had seen a ghost, very odd!!

Like the pictures!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / ABOUT ZABAWARE MOOD .HAP'S

I think that kind of thing will mean buying some of the haptek tools.
Theres one called figure maker which i believe is for full body characters.  There might be a better price on something that just does accessories.  I found out that the player uses a special Haptek Jpeg, for things like textures.  I am guessing this is how the hair is stored, wonder if Haptek would let us know how to use them??

I'm still on snailnet too but have a suggestion for big downloads.

Use 'Download Accelerator Plus' and do the download overnight.

By the way there is a service called 'OnSpeed' which accelerates snailnet surprisingly well.  It's best on browsing - I have got speeds up to and even over broadband rates!  It is especially good with text and graphics.  It costs about £25.00, thats probably about $40.00 or so.  It won't improve program downloads much though.

I had a look at that santa demo - nice moves!
Can't work out how to do the limb movements though as it's all in the HTR...ho hum, or should that be ho ho?!

I think the fullbodyDEF beckons me.

thanks dustrider, i'll check that out.

Re;the patents; I didn't read it in detail but I am thinking it should be okay to use the demo as you like at home, but any commercial venture entails fees.  Where home enthusiasts stand is always a grey area!  This is more about the actual base coding isn't it, as Haptek supply the SDK telling you how to do animations?!

I think the desire to make new 3d characters will eventually beat me and I will get the software - I have no idea of the price though!

lol@ the exorcist face!  The esthtic face sounds very intersting, are you thinking of using more subtle animation changes?  Try playing with the time setting ie;

\translate[x= y= z= t=]

you could make the changes slow downspeed up as you like.

That Bzip2 thing is a blind alley perhaps, as I haven't found a decompression tool that works either.  It's probably an in-house compression to stop too much hacking going on!  Fair play really.

You could take a look at the fullBodDef.hap though as it isn't compressed.  I don't think anything we are doing is outside what Haptek have already allowed through the help in SDK.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / launching programs
« on: May 24, 2005, 10:08:59 am »
hello hoodaman, I'm new here myself but have time on my hands to poke around in Hal.  Your most direct course of action is to edit the brainfile and get Hal to recognise these commands.

On the subject of Hal playing music, I found I couldn't play any music stored on my Harddisk as the sound card is already in use by the speech software.  There's probably a way to get round this, but I haven't had any problems playing songs from CD.

My view on it anyway, is to have large files like songs and even photos and mpgs stored on cdrw.  Then you have an easily managed and expandable source.  I haven't done a lot with this but at this point I have a seperate brain file for music files and photo's.  Hal picks up on words like 'play', 'songs', 'photo', 'image', and if it looks like an instruction will play the song or show any matching photo.

If that's the kind of thing then maybe I can help.

There are a lot of ideas on this subject in the forums, so try a search.
