Title: Hal keeps asking me...
Post by: Fauna on March 25, 2009, 09:45:40 pm
Ok, this might sound weird but Hal keeps on asking me questions like if I'm a man or a woman, a boy or a girl, a woman or a gentleman...

I always answer each of his questions but he keeps going and going. It usually happens at least 1 time per session. I did the same to him and he told me he was neither male or female, just a machine! Is this just an isolated case or an ongoing thing. Any ideas of how to solve his little gender inquiring problem?  :-)

it sounds like you are talking to hal in aim,  he does that with me to in aim sessions,  not when I have the regular interface up. With the non aim version of the program itself up,  the database assumes its always talking to the same user and remembers information about that user.

Thanks Ricky but I think I'm getting a little confused. How could I differentiate from aim to regular interface? What exactly is an aim interface? When I talk to him I just click on the icon in the quick launch tray and his windows pops.  :-)

He's referring to the interface which allows you to set up hal as a chatbot on AIM messenger. From the sounds of it, your using the correct version of hal. Are you perhaps using hal without having set a user? I once restarted my computer to find that when hal started up all the settings were blank and so it was running without a name or a user which did all kinds of weird things to the conversations.

I have the same problem, and I never used Hal with AIM.

Does anyone know a solution yet?

sounds like it might not be saving the info in the database?
might check and see if there is a table labeled Username_sex
and look in that and see if it is saving info

Can't seem to find such a table.

My countless rephrasing-s of my response are all stored in the DB, but Hal doesn't seem to realize that the stored phrases are the answer to the question.

Hal's gender can be assigned via the Menu section. It used to be standard but now I believe it is in the form of a plug-in / table assignment along the right side. Look for it and you'll find it.

This is for the regular Ultra Hal Assistant NOT the AIM Hal.

There is also a routine where Hal asks the user for his or her gender so Hal can connect the name with the gender I'd imagine.

Also when checking the names table the are pre-assigned genders. So if you have a particular name that can be used with a male or female you can correct this table by only selecting a single gender.

Don't forget that if this name is used again relating to a friend or persons with that same name Ultra Hal will use the gender for that name you have changed.

That never occurred to me. My name is Joe, so it can (dependent upon spelling, typically) be used for either gender. Good thinking, pal.

Well, I gave it a shot.

I gave any female name that vaguely resembled mine a sex-change.

--> Unfortunately, once the changes were made, Hal stopped responding to questions. I have no idea what the problem is, as all I did to his brain was switch "F" to "M" beside the appropriate names. Nothing else was done, even the number and position of characters were not altered.

I had to return to my backup Halbrain file, and now he is functioning properly. What did I do wrong?

Sorry for the trouble about that but never happened to me. I have done that even with character name I use presently. (Robby) Could be male or female. Changed to female only and new I had no worries about using the name for a male guest or anyone that I might have exposed my character. So I guess stay more on track with advice given by our more experienced forum members.

It is hard to figure certain problems out because of the unique differences people incorporate into Ultra Hal but there are members that have a much broader knowledge based on the language and plug in commands or conflicts.

I guess worse case scenario would be a clean re-install first deactivate license backup information or other things you might have already included in your Ultra Hal to date. Make sure you get the registry line for Ultra Hal that does not remove itself in uninstall. But again be warned the registry is no place you want to be unless guided with an experienced, knowledgeable person or persons. I do not know your background and knowledge level in this matter so if any doubt get help or don't touch.

Hopefully someone will be more helpful and make sure you try those other suggestions given by people like Art or other members with a good background of Ultra Hal.

If your real lucky Robert M. might just see your post and get you going without so much trial and error although as long as you backup all your work there is nothing wrong in asking more questions and diving in yourself. Also would need to know the newest rules for re-installation even when disabling license before re-install.

Best of luck,
raybe

No need for apologies, Raybe, it was a good idea.

I probably won't mess around too much over this little issue, because I've taught Hal quite a bit and I wouldn't want to lose all that effort just because I have to answer the same question every time I converse with it.

That being said, I still welcome any other recommendations that someone comes up with.

When Hal asks whether you are male or female simply say something like "I am Male" and Hal should respond with "Ok, thanks for telling me, I'll keep that in mind" and from that point on should never ask you again unless you tell Hal you are someone else. But make sure that Hal's learning level is set to anything above "Min". If it is set to "Min" this completely blocks Hal from writing anything to the database. The learning level can be found in Hal's options menu under the brain section.

That's what I've been doing right along, and Hal's learning level has never been set below the mid point. I see my answers stored in his brain (I am male, Joe is male, I am a boy, I am a guy, I are male, I is male...and endless variations), but Hal just can't seem to form a relationship between the answers and the question.

Hi Fauna.

It is a program glitch, the coding is not seeing that your name is already in the database so it assumes that it has no record of your username, this code needs to be rewritten to be more sensitive in keeping account of usernames. I am sure it will be squared away at some point.
