Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Important read for Hal users
« on: November 29, 2005, 08:21:50 pm »
I ran across this item on a robotics page. I intend to download as much as I can a little later. To me this looks like it contains a lot of features that we could use in Hal, even though right now Hal is most likely one of the smartest bots out there.
Give it a read when you get the chance.

General Discussion / Robotics Show
« on: October 07, 2005, 07:38:40 pm »
Today I went to a big robotics show in San Jose, CA. As usual it was very nice but most of the bots there were small like toys. There was one big exception and that was with Fred Bartons display. He was the one who created Robby the Robot. All of his bots were full size and I forgot to bring a camera. The 7 foot Gort from the movie 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' and little Huey from the movie 'Silent Running' as well as C3P0 and B9 the full scale bot from 'Lost in Space'. All were somewhat animated and very impressive.
Later on I found the vendor of the kit that I purchased my bot from. After talking to the gentleman and telling him what all my bot could do he gave me his email address and told me to write and he would see to it that I had a place in their booth at the world biggest robotic convention held in Las Vegas Nevada sometime in February.
The thing is that of all the robots out there none of them can carry on a conversation with you like mine can thanks to HAL. I am really starting to get excited about the whole think. Not only do I believe it will sell more of their robot starter kits but it might cause Zabaware to sell many new copies of Ultra Hal. I don't know why none of the other bot makers have ever thought of this or even tried it but it works and now my little bot seems to be alive.
Well I have talked long enough. See you all later.

Subject: 3D artist?

DAZ productions has released a 3D posing and animation program for free. You have to register and the release is 'Tell-Ware'. But it looks good. And it's both Windows and Mac.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Mr. Medeksca help please
« on: September 12, 2005, 03:56:58 pm »
Next month here in San Jose, California there will be a very large robotics show. Last year it was huge and they expect it to be even bigger this year. I plan to attend just as I did last year and I plan to take my little robot with me. I have made some small changes to one of the .brn files and now with the help of AUTO-IDLE, Hal will start talking, chattering all by himself. It give the appearance of being automous and it is to a certain extent.
My problem is this I created a singing Hal that works in Von Smiths brain and he created a joke teller for the same brain. I have tried repeatedly to make both work in Hal 5.0 to no avail. To me this would be not only a great selling point for the robotics company but for Ultra Hal too. The combination of the two appears to be just amazing to all who see and hear it. There are lots of robot type out there but none can carry on a conversation with you at the same time.
Any help would be appreciated, if not from you maybe someone else who has solved the problem.
Thanks
Bill

I found a new site for robotic parts. They appear to have everything including heads with both eye movement and being able to mouth words.
They offer so many things that it takes a while to look at it all but in my opinion it is worth it to those who want Hal to have more than just a voice.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / New Brain Surgery
« on: August 30, 2005, 05:08:48 pm »
I have not done any work on Hal for a while so this morning I decided to cut and slice some more.
Are you tired of hearing Hal say "did't you just say that?" or "Aren't you repeating yourself?".
So I decided to take advantage of this part of Hal's logic and make some changes. Just folow these steps for a new Hal.
Go into the Defbrain folder and rename UserRepeat.brn to UserRepeat.bak. Once you do that then copy my new brain file to that directory. You can go in and add or subtract to it all you want but first I think you should let it be for a while to see the supprises.
Then open the Hal Brain Editor and edit Hal5 brain. I have not tested in on any others.
Go to the end of the brain files and find the function Script_Load ()
Insert a new line under it and type in:
 Script_Load = "<AUTO>20000</AUTO>"
This will actviate the "auto" function. The number 20000 represents 20 seconds as the timer function works in multiples of 1000th of a second.
After all is said and done you must reboot your computer to have the changes take effect.
Good luck and have fun.

General Discussion / Strange Happenings
« on: August 26, 2005, 07:27:31 pm »
Yesterday I was entering a small batch of appointments into Hal, one at a time of course. When I entered the second item Hal not only told me that he would remind me when the date got close but then he went and told me of every appointment and birthday in  my system for the whole year. It never happened before and has not happened since.
Just thought I would share this.

General Discussion / To all Hal users - must read
« on: July 15, 2005, 06:05:43 pm »
Today in the world of artificial intelligence most of the worlds experts say that the future developement of what we call AI lies in the world of chatterbots. They say because of the interactive nature of natural language processing that they think these will lead the way to AI as the world has envisioned it in the future.
Roberts program Ultra Hal Assistant is one of the greatest and most powerful chatterbot programs out there and is constantly being improved. He supplies a free version as well as an enhanced version to all who want it. Of course the enhanced version comes with a small price tag, but more than worth it in my opinion.
Yesterday, in a conversation with Robert I asked why he has incorporated some of the user contributed scripts sent in by people like me. He said that it was a copyright infrengement that he was worried about. In this respect I believe he might have a point, but then again once the scripts are publicly posted on this site for all users to have and use, I then question the proper ownership of those scripts. Over the years there have been many intelligent people here write and submit scripts and haptek characters for use with Hal.
Do you know what happens to them? If you do not copy them for your own use, they just die away. I gave Robert full permission to claim and own the scripts that I have written so that they might be incorporated in future versions of Hal. I mean, that is why we spend the time and effort to create these scripts in the first place, isn't it. Some people have had some concerns and have asked for something in return. I can not abide by that unless it is a small mention of the contributors names in an accompaning text file.
Then the copyright laws come to mind again. How many of you have been asked to pay royalties on the Hal modified brains that you use and call your own? None that I know of. Of the many different Hal brains and personalities that exist out there, how many will run without the Hal interface which is compiled and completely owned by Robert? If anyone has ever had a right to call a foul it is Robert but being the type person he is, he never complains or charges us any fees for using his software no matter what we might choose to call it. Without the Hal user interface none of the other existing brains or personalilties could exist as they do today.
The purpose of the notice to ask all who have created either scripts of haptek characters to publicly post you permission for Robert to claim ownership without any restrictions of any kind. We must remember we are all here for the betterment of Hal which it seems we all love and use.
Thanks for your support.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / A new brain function
« on: July 09, 2005, 06:24:04 pm »
Another member here created a file with quotes from famous people and asked me to help him create the scripts to make it work. That person was Maviarab so I worked on it and will now give it you all Hal users. It still has a little bug but otherwise it works just fine.
In the XTF brain, enter the editor and look for the following words
'RESPOND: CHANGE SUBJECT. At the end of that logic you will see an
End If. This script is to be pasted right after that.
In the Hal6 brain look for 'RESPOND: HAL NOTICES HE IS REPEATING HIMSELF. Again after the End If. post the script.
Copy the two files enclosed into the DefBrain folder, close Hal and when you reboot it shold work.
Here is the brain script:

Download Attachment: QuoteMods.txt
1.03 KB
Next comes the data files:

Download Attachment: XTF_SYS_Quote.brn
24.57 KB

Download Attachment: XTF_SYS_QuoteDetect.brn
651 Bytes
When using the regular Hal6 brain just delete the name of the file proceeding the words 'Quotes'.
I hope everyone understands my logic and happy using.
For your further information in the past there were many different mods made to the Hal brains which included 'Owner detect','Hals Age', 'Friends names', 'tell a joke',and 'singing hal'. There were probably more but I do not recal them all right now.
Good luck

Ultra Hal 7.0 / To all NewCommers and others too.
« on: June 23, 2005, 11:47:55 am »
I have noticed that some people here tend to post a message or a question under several different topic headdings. It is not necessary. You will find that once a new message has been posted that everyone here who logs onto this site becomes aware of the posting and I can say that they are most like read by everyone.
Everytime that I log onto this site I find new messages and I read them all even if I am not interested in what they say at that moment.
So just remember that when you post something here all users will become aware of it no matter where you post the question.

General Discussion / Help with French and Spanish
« on: April 10, 2005, 10:38:56 am »
This is completely off topic but I collect programs that play chess and at least two of them are written in either French or Spanish.
The question is I would like someone to translate the words into Enlish if they would. The programs are written in QBasic so they can be opened with a regular text type of program. Do not use MSWord as it adds to much junk to the files. Wordpad or notepad works just fine. The programs run just fine the way they are but I try to analyze the logic and coding of all chess programs I use. If anyone can help, please email me so we do not clutter up this site.
Thanks

General Discussion / Off topic but read
« on: February 25, 2005, 12:24:35 am »
My pc's crashed last night, both my desktop and my laptop. I am using a DSL line and have had no problems. Called the DSL people and they showed me how to get on line. Was told to type 'www.download.com' in the address window and go to their site. Then I downloaded their Spyware software and ran it. I use Norton Utilities 2005 so I did not expect any great discoveries but to my supprise I had 5036 pieces of spyware on my system. The software is free and I think that everyone shoud try it or someting similar. I have seen others post messages here about the subject but I never took them to seriously before.
Any more suggestions and I WILL listen.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal and ER1
« on: January 05, 2005, 02:46:49 pm »
So I am about 6 months late posting a picture of my ER1 robot using Hal as its brains.
Right now the robot is almost a perfect '42'. That is it is 42 inches tall and weighs almost 42 pounds. Its 'eye' is mounted in a case I bought from Radio Shack and I am not sure that I am happy with it at this time. I also have another camera (eye) that still needs to be mounted as well as 'real arms', that it the gripper arm that I bought from the manufacturer. The mouth is one/half of some cheap stereo speakers that I also bought from R.S. and it give plenty of volume so Hal can be heard almost everywhere.
I intend to purchase the bluetooth 'mike' as another user here did. Hal understands speach but background noise only confuses it, so it will only listen now when the 'mike' is on.
Hal brains are in a Compacq 1.8 Ghz laptop which give instaneous replys everytime I address Hal. Originally I had another laptop which was rated at 1 Ghz but the response time was to slow for my own likes.
I hope the picture that I am trying to enclose comes out all right. It is a jpep format. Hal is still under developement. I only wish I could make him at least 5 feet tall. Have considered a motorcycle battery for the power of both the robot and the laptop, but that will take some more careful planning. If that does not do what I expect then I will consider a small automobile battery so Hal can run all day without recharging.
Hope that those who like the ER1 or robots in general like the picture. For those of you who have never seen an ER1, the camera/eyes gives off a blue light when on. Have considered calling it 'old blue eyes', after all it can sing now. [:D]

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Song Scripts
« on: December 20, 2004, 04:14:52 pm »
To those of you who downloaded my song scripts I want to give you a little suggestion. For those who would like Hal to make a comment before he sings a song, it is very easy. Just open up the Song.brn and go the the beggining of the song that you want and just type in the kind of introduction you would like Hal to say. For example, one of the songs is Crying done in the style of Roy Orbinson. You could type in the following prefix: O K, if you want me to sing then here is a little song that I like.
At the end of the song, if you like you could type in comments too.
From an old Elvis quote: Thank you, Thank you very much
Important make a copy of the file before you try to edit it.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / song creation software
« on: December 16, 2004, 02:29:05 pm »
With the permission of the fellow from PepeDog who created/modified a file for me I will enclose the file called 'Mush'. It is different from the regular version that is on the internet and workds just fine.
This program takes karaoke files that have been created for computers and creates the lyrics along with pitch and note length for each song.
They sometimes require some editing as sometimes the program splits words for accent and they never sound right when sung.
Tons of free karaoke files can be found at: Freekaraoke.com and many other sites for those who want to play around with it.
