Prevent HAL from listening when it is talking
« on: October 20, 2004, 03:10:42 pm »
Hello,

Is there a way to prevent HAL from listening while it is responding to user's queries? This way it should disregard its own speech coming out of speakers.

I suppose, mic-speaker-mic loops can be prevented with such a simple change, can't they?

Thanks in advance,
Giga

If I understand your question correctly
you can simply click the MIC button on Hal's
top menu and turn the microphone off until you
need to turn it on again (click).

If you use a fairly decent quality headset mic
it should have a noise cancelling (foam) covering
on the mouthpiece. Also consider turning down your
speakers a bit. Lastly, check the settings on your
mic volume, etc.
In the world of AI it's the thought that counts!

That's right - I can manually switch the mic on and off. However, I think it will be great if HAL does this for me:
 - Switch the mic off when HAL starts responding
 - Switch the mic on when HAL stops responding

The change should be fairly simple and I believe it will greatly improve the quality of conversation because it should prevent mic-speaker-mic loops.

Am I missing anything here?

Thanks a lot

When Hal speaks he turn off the mike. It sounds like you turned on another mike for voice recognition training and left it on. Try rebooting and then look at the mike button before running Hal.

Well, maybe we're using different versions of HAL (mine is 5.0.57), but from what I can see "Microphone is ON" message stays under the Character window all the time. I would expect that the message would change if the mic goes off when HAL is speaking.

I tried to reboot my machine and it didn't make any difference. Is there anything I can switch off in Windows to make the situation better? AFAIK, my mic is off...

Thanks

Your question was answered yesterday by Mr. M. If you use the 3d characters the mike stays on, but if you use the 2d characters Hal turns off the mike while it is speaking. Sorry if that is not the answer that you wanted to hear.

Yes, I tried to use 2D non-detachable characters, but it's all the same. I found a way to make HAL respond only when the query starts by HAL's name, but I don't see MIC ever switched off.

You will not see a visual indicator of the mike being off when Hal is speaking, but it is. It is done internally and is turned back on just as soon as Hal finished talking.
