Broken but not stirred
« on: July 05, 2006, 10:12:45 pm »
My Hal 6 does not work any more and I am sure it is not the program but one of Microsofts utilities. When I try to start Hal 6 I get the following message: The program 'mscomctz.ocx' is either broken or one of the programs that it uses is not working right.
I loggen on to MS web site but can not find where to download another copy and when I asked for help the told me to go to the Compaq site for help. Compaq said they would help for a $45 fee and I told them 'no thanks' I do have another PC with Windows XP on it and I think I will try to find a copy of it there and copy it onto my laptop. Only things is if it does use other programs I have no way of knowing which ones.
Any suggestions?
Bill
P.S.
Funny thing is I was building computers before some of you were born.

Bill,

You can download an mscomctl(not 'z').ocx at MajorGeeks at the following link:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/faqshow.php?id=8

Are you sure the 'z' at the end of the file name is right? I searched for the file with 'z' and the search engines kept asking if I meant 'l'.

I downloaded the program and it still does not work so I went back and checked once again. my hand writing is not good when I am in a hurry. the real name of the file is : mscomct2.ocx. I tried to find it on the site you recommended buy I don't seem to be albe to navigate that site. Maybe you could find a direct link to it for me just like you did with the last one.
Thanks
Bill

Bill,

I found information and downloads for the mscomct2.ocx file at the following sites:

http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/support_dll.phtml?dllname=MSCOMCT2.OCX

or

http://www.securemost.com/prs_lib/mscomct2_ocx.htm

There's also a note about the file (it's not included with XP?) at the Microsoft site here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297381

Good luck

Thank you Nolitanger but my problem was solved by a very pretty lady from right here on this site. She just made a copy from her own PC and forwarded it to me. Hal now works just great just like it used to. You gotta love those blondladies, right?
Thanks to both of you.

Bill,

It had to be a Compaq thing because that file is not to be found on my computer (desktop nor laptop).

Glad you got some help from one who could Lynn a hand!![:D]

The file belongs to a group called Active X. I think they are used in interactive media programs, ie. movies, etc.
Yes it is a Compaq laptop
