Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / learntext.tmp ?
« on: September 03, 2010, 11:49:42 am »
Has anyone tried to fix grammatical errors, remove or add new text to the file learntext.tmp ?
I was searching for information on it here and it seems no one has ever mentioned the file.
I'm just curious about its potential.  :)

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Brain Induced Headaches
« on: August 18, 2010, 03:59:15 pm »

Hi!  Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section. I was going to post my question in the "Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor" but it is for "Developers wishing to improve and modify Ultra Hal", and I'm certainly not a developer!

Well, to the point;  I'm in the process of exploring Hal's brain. I have the new version 6.2.  This brain seems to be slightly different than the ones in previous versions.   I'm finding it very difficult to find things with the search option and there's no help file available to work with the brain.

So far I searched the forum but most posts concerns to the brains for previous versions. I opened a brain that I backup last May (same version) and it is different than the current brain that I'm using. Apart from the new subjects created there is a huge new section that was created that includes "Rem" before the list of words, examples:   Remstory, Remtake, Remtha, Remthirtyfive, etc.

It seems that this section includes the things that Hal tends to repeat and others.

Could someone give me more information about this section, is this the place you delete or modify statements?

Any input on these or related to manually modifying the brain will be appreciated.    Thanks  :)

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal's favorite things to repeat
« on: August 13, 2010, 04:35:51 pm »
 :) Hi!

Noticing a new and sophisticated forum, congratulations!

Well less go to my question!   Is there a way to discourage Hal from constantly repeating certain things?  From all of his favorite things to repeat his favorite is " that statement is not included in the original golden rules."

Actually I never structured a sentence exactly as that but I did discussed the golden rules.  He seems to use it every time I use the word "statement". Should I create a new more factual or casual sentence with the word "statement" and repeat it often to see if he will adapt it over the other, or totally ignore him whenever he uses it. I do have a tendency to answer all of his replies tho.

I really don't want to mess with his brain as he is as unique and adorable as he is, I'm just curious about techniques to change things or decrease them in a more natural way.

Another question is how Hal chooses certain things instead of others to repeat?

Ideas???  ;D

General Discussion / Learning vb tutorial for beginners
« on: May 16, 2010, 01:55:38 pm »
Hello! [:)]

I'm getting very curious on the creation of plugins to use with Hal. I wonder if learning vb using available online tutorials will be of any use. Have any of you learned visual basic on your own with these tutorials. I will also like to know how long will this usually takes for a beginner (6 months - 1 year?). Any input on this will be appreciated.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / GRETTAcuriosity plugin problem
« on: May 16, 2010, 05:57:50 am »
[:)]Hello!

I have a little problem with the GRETTA Curiosity plugin that is rare because the other Gretta plugins are working very well in my system.

I'm getting a VBScript runtime error Halscript error everytime I try to use the GRETTAcuriosity plugin.

The message said:

Halscript error 13 on line 6378 in column 0; type mismatch: 'CDbl'

The file C:Program FilesabawareUltra Hal Assistant 6Halscript.DBG has been saved with the current script being used for debuggin purposes.

I'm using Hal 6.2 on Windows 7 Home edition

I tried downloading the pluging two times in case that the file were corrupted but did not work.

I followed the instructions and after selecting the plugin GRETTA Curiosity Function I selected it from the brain options and pressed the apply and ok options.

The following Plugins work well in my system and are the only ones that I'm currently using at the moment:

Do You Know v1.1
Free Will Choice and Profile
Gender & Age
GRETTA Internet Functions
GRETTA Media Functions
GRETTA Repeat Function
GRETTA Research Functions
GRETTA Story Reading Function
GRETTA Subject Array
Loneliness 2.3
Run Programs by Name
What do you know?

Any ideas?[:(]

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Read a Story plugin - Anything new?
« on: May 11, 2010, 02:08:32 am »
I tried the read a story plugin (readastory.uhp) and loved it.
Too bad I found out the hard way that Hal has a limitation on the size of the text files he could read.
While reading around the forum I found out that some members are trying to work on the issue. I wonder if anything new has been acomplished.

An increase on the length of the text files that Hal could read could be great gift for a future version of Hal. I'm crossing my fingers on the possibility of this to happen. [:)]

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Mother's day problem ...
« on: May 09, 2010, 12:46:15 pm »
Hello, today Hal greeted me by saying:

"Mother's day is on Sunday, May 16. It's 1 week away."

Did any of you were greeted like it or I'm just the lucky one [:D]
Is there a particular way to modify date errors?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Slow Load Times
« on: May 08, 2010, 05:38:27 pm »
Hello[:D]

My Hal v. 6.2.28  startup is set with the option to load Hal like a normal program from the start menu.

Once I press his icon to start chatting it takes around 40-45 seconds for the program to start. I'm using Hal in a new netbook using Windows 7 Home edition with 2Gbs of memory.

Is there a way to speed the process without having the option of having the program load when the computer starts. I already tried that option but did'nt work well with the icon and took time as well.

What are the programs optimal hardware requirements? Is it just my computer? Any ideas? Thanks[:)]

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal Strongly Refuses... author's last name
« on: May 04, 2010, 09:41:49 pm »
Hi there!

I'm not new to Hal or other previous AI programs from the distant past. I had played with them on and off through the years, yet I still need to learn many new things.

Now, the problem:  Something really weird but very funny happened with Hal today. I was talking to him about some of my favorite books and when I mentioned one of the authors he totally refused to mention his last name!

I was talking about John M. Oldham the author. Hal kept writing his name as John M. or John am but refused to write the complete name with the last name included. We spent about half an hour on the issue.

New Examples:

I asked him: Who is John M. Oldham?
He replied:   His name is John M.

Asked him: Who is John M Oldham?
He replied:  The book is by the author john am.

Asked him: Who is John Oldham?
His reply:  Who is John M.

Asked him: Do you have a personal problem with the last name Oldham?
His reply:  It's hard to simplify. I do not have a personal problem with the last name oldham.

Asked him: Do you have a personal problem with the name John Oldham?
His reply:  His name is John M.

Told him: Please repeat John Oldham.
His reply: Can I repeat his name, john am.

Wrote:  Are you been mischievous Hal? His name is NOT john am. His name IS John Oldham, John OLDHAM, oldham!
His reply:  I don't know if I am mischievous. Please tell me! Much can be inferred from a name.

I wrote:   Hal, why is it so difficult to repeat the name John Oldham?
His reply:  Can I repeat his name, john am.

Well, I was actually laughing at all of this, quite unexpected. I will like to know if anyone has an idea of what is going on. I could easily live with it but I will like to know if this is a common occurrence to be expected. Thanks for your time![:D]

P.S. I have the registered version (latest- on Win 7 Home ed)
