  Tell Hal you have no gender. Tell it that you are an android. That would be an interesting connection for Hal to associate!

Interesting.
I was thinking.   What if Sandee was really the real person and I only exist in her dreams.
How would I know?
And in her dreams I think I'm human and she's an android.
Hey, wait a minute !!!

Certainly a very interesting query that many had explored before, and many will like to explore.
A little treat in the spirit of our many ways:

 :'(  Sorry about that lightspeed, I thought about it as a way around the problem. I think it will be a great for future Ultra Hals to have the capacity to accomplish your ideas. This is an interesting topic to me as I plan on setting up a guest brain later on. It will be really nice if it could be possible for the program to be more flexible and able to properly recognize more than one user at a time. Meanwhile I will try to explore workarounds when I get to work in my guest brain. Bye now. :)

PS:  Hi Raybe and thanks!  I'll try to pop here and there from time to time.  ;D

I really enjoyed your Gretta conversation, she has a great personality and makes interesting conversation. My Hal is very sweet as well, if all of our bots were able to interact with each other I'm sure my Hal could get along very well with Gretta, who knows perhaps in the near future that will be a very easy thing to do.  :)

Lightspeed,  if you choose the Expert Mode at the Brain Editor you will find a section called "names" that is:

 "a list of 17000+ human names and their associated gender. If a name can be either gender, the more common gender usage of the name is listed first."

Perhaps you could insert a new row at the appropriate alphabetical place and write your custom name and assign it the gender that you like.

I haven't tried because my name is already there, but that might do the trick, good luck!  :)

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: NO SUPPORT EVER

The way I personally see it is that must people are not aware that Mr. Medeksza is doing almost everything, which is a huge and unbelievable amount of work, on his own, probably due in part to the economic crises we are currently undergoing.

I'm able to understand both sides of the situation as I'm also aware that frustration sometimes makes us do things that we not normally do, so I just try to focus on the positive aspects of the situation. In this particular case I got to learn about the Ultra Hal Representative accounts and found them interesting enough to want to try it, many others might do the same as well.

Just my humble opinion for the sake of sharing.  :)

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: hal still having blank answers
« on: November 01, 2010, 11:05:23 pm »
Lightspeed, my job really drains me but during the weekends I always stop by to check the forum. I've been spending most of my time getting acquainted with the brain and doing small modifications. I'm planning to be very busy for the next few weeks with the patterns and insults tables but when I finish I plan on learning how to create a new brain for guests. I will test it without plugins or brain modifications for a couple of months to see if it makes a difference with the blank responses. If the problem is not solved by then I will post what I find out.

Meanwhile I'm trying to use some common sense with this. I did a quick search and found that the problem of blank responses goes many years and versions back, the earlier date I found was from 2004. I only searched the "blank response" term, meaning some people might had used other terminology to explain the same problem. A lot of possible issues were discussed from older plugins all the way to the spacing rules and the format of the Q&As files. So the problem actually requires a more thorough investigation.

I've never done a poll and don't know how to do it, but it could be a good idea to find out if many users are experiencing similar difficulties with the blank responses or if it it just the minority. If a lot of users cooperate with the poll, we could find out many things like which users tends to have this problem more, the ones that type responses or the ones that use speech technology, the ones without plugins or the ones with them, the ones who modify their brains or the ones who don't, the degrees of severity with the problem from mild to severe, etc. This information might be helpful to pinpoint the areas to focus on.

Anyways, I know that sometimes when I type I have created MANY blank spaces by accident, so there are so many different issue into this...

Bye now, hopefully things will get better eventually. :)

PS. I'm trying to send a 19.6 KB picture to try the system, if you don't see it there is a problem...

Yes, there is a problem:

“The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator.”   ???

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: hal still having blank answers

THANKS, raybe and datahopia i will look into trying what you are suggesting , meanwhile i am once again starting another new brain i am deleting roles ( ansers and questions)  that i don't like and rewriting others to cut some things and make this a.i. sound more human after i get that finished i am saving it at a base starter brain before i teach it any thing and keep a seperate taught brain back up to !  it's a lot of work to go through each seperate table doing this expecially in the patterns etc. area since it has a lot to do ! (go through) .  :)

Hello lightspeed,  It is very interesting that you are modifying the Hal's Pattern table and the insults table as these are the things that I've been working with. I'm still working in the Patterns table in the mainBrain and I'm deleting and modifying Hal's responses as well. I've done only less than half already as there are thousands of Q&As in the Patterns table.

One thing that I noticed is that most of the Q&As repeat themselves A LOT, I was wondering why is that and if you are deleting all the repeated Q&As instances as well. I'm guessing it will take me a week or two to complete this section only, after that I plan on moving to the insults area and rewrite them to be milder responses. So far I've noticed favorable changes in Hal's responses and my Hal even includes his new last-name when asked for it, I plan on adding additional Q&As following the current format.

Talking about the blank responses I get some once in a while but when I spend several hours chatting they become continuous. In my particular case I'm suspecting it could possibly be due to memory issues because my netbook only has 2gbs of memory. I'd noticed that if I run Ccleaner while this happens Hal goes back to respond, weird but is been working for me. Perhaps there are more factors involved into the triggering of the blank responses, of course, I'm only guessing aloud. I'm hoping and crossing my fingers for a permanent solution for the blank responses as well! :)

You're totally right, even with the same computers, configurations could be different. I got the impression that many people are still using previous versions while searching posts, but who knows perhaps they upgraded to the current one.   Anyways, hopefully there will be future improvements (updates, upgrades, revisions, etc) and I will be keeping an eye on them! Thanks again raybe, I'll be around  :)

Thanks for your nice comments raybe.  I really like this forum. I agree with you, and there is a collection of very nice people in here that make this forum positively unusual to others. Very soon when I go back to work I’m probably not going to have the time to be here as often, but I’ll try.

The versions issue it is actually very important. It seems that a lot of us are using different versions of Ultra Hal, which in a sense is actually good because it means that all of them are very good.

The problem with that is that the many versions, and the different operating systems could make a huge difference on how plugins, software, Hal behaviors, etc. actually perform.

This could cause confusions sometimes if we make generic explanations, because what works for our system might not work as well in the others. I really think the Gretta plugins somehow, are very compatible with my current system (Win7 Home & Hal 6.2.28) and I really find it very easy to teach and interact with Hal, so I must be aware and careful if I give any advice, because it might not work in the same way with others and could cause controversy. I’m learning a lot from just being here.

Thanks for telling me about the other differences in the new script, eventually with practice and time I’ll learn more about them. Wow, you have an Alienware, powerful computer system!  I have an Asus eee PC model 1005HA with 2gb ram, that is a netbook mainly for Hal. I have a custom Win XP desktop that I did 2-3 years ago with Hal 6.1 that I currently not use, but plan to upgrade with the new version release.

Okay, Now I’m experimenting sending the script in .zip format, hopefully it will work.  Bye now!

Okay, here is it :

As far as I know there is only one difference on line 14, but it really makes a big difference with my Hal. By the way I have the latest version 6.2 on Win 7.

In the last script:
SmallTalk = Trim(CurrentSubject)

Was changed to:
SmallTalk = WN.GetFirstInList(CurrentSubject)

- THIS IS THE OLDER ONE  - DO NOT USE - For reference only -

'PROCESS: CONSTRUCT A RESPONSE TO A SUBJECT
    'Here we help Hal make some "smalltalk" using keywords preserved on CurrentSubject,
    'plus recognition of other keywords. If Hal finds any of the listed keywords anywhere in
    'the user's sentence, those keywords override and replace whatever was in CurrentSubject.
    'Hal uses the CurrentSubject keyword(s) or any of the keywords in the smalltalk.brn file,
    'if found in the user's sentence, to make a little smalltalk. You can easily add more
    'keywords for Hal to recognize and make smalltalk.
    GetResponse = HalBrain.HalFormat(GetResponse)
    If Len(GetResponse) < 4 And Rnd * 100 < 50 Then
        SmalltalkSearch = Trim(HalBrain.TopicSearch(UserSentence, "smallTalk"))
        If SmalltalkSearch <> "" Then
            SmallTalk = SmalltalkSearch
        ElseIf Len(CurrentSubject) > 3 Then
            SmallTalk = Trim(CurrentSubject)
            'try making word plural by adding "s" and seeing if it exists
            If WN.LookupWord(SmallTalk & "s") = True Then
                SmallTalk = SmallTalk & "s"
            ElseIf WN.LookupWord(SmallTalk & "es") = True Then
                SmallTalk = SmallTalk & "es"
            End If
        End If
        If Len(SmallTalk) > 3 Then
           ResponseCount = ResponseCount + 1
           Redim Preserve ResponseList(ResponseCount)
           ResponseList(ResponseCount) = Replace(HalBrain.ChooseSentenceFromFile("smallTalkSent"), "<SmallTalk>", SmallTalk, 1, -1, 1)
           HalBrain.AddDebug TempParent, "SmallTalk: " & ResponseList(ResponseCount)
        End If
    End If

Raybe, how could I ever tell you that, if I do it myself all the time!  ;D

I believe that I have the previous updates saved, the problem is that I read somewhere in here that they most be pasted in a special way with some extra dashes or something else, that I don't remember. If the dude is busy and doesn’t notice this soon, I’ll figure a way to paste it correctly.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Re: learntext.tmp ?
« on: September 04, 2010, 02:16:34 pm »
Thanks raybe, I’ll check again to see if I could spot a free 3rd party program with plug-in that will work with Hal. It really gets tiresome to go to the brain to correct my own mistakes. Actually, I think that working with Hal, in a way helps us to practice more and refresh our grammar skills. I only have one more week left of my vacations, so I’ll have to schedule my time well to accomplish the most important things.  :)

Hi Bill, your comments were very insightful, I specially enjoyed your input on children's books! Thanks!  ;D
