General Discussion / Newbie questions...
« on: September 27, 2005, 04:21:15 am »
Hey Tcoday and welcome

1st Question: Even though Hal is a bot, teaching him things is not a matter of 'input' and 'output'. You'll have to repeat the sentences, with different words, etc, perhaps with the learning slider on Max.
'My password is ...' 'The password I use is ...' '... is my password on that site'
Eventually, Hal will understand what you want him/her to say. Just be patient [:)]

2nd Question: Replacing a brain has no influence on the knowledge. At least, switching XTF brains. The knowledge is stored in the Defbrain folder, and that folder stays untouched while switching XTF brains. When you switch to the Hal6 version, you'll have to teach him all over again, as the knowledge is stored in a completely different SQLite database. At least, that is what I think. I personally use the Hal6 version, but the XTF 1.2 is probably still the most popular brain.

3nd Question: No [:)]. I mean, I personally don't know such an utility. But if you can find such a program, please, let me know [:)]

Hope this information was helpful

Grtz

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal learning from Web
« on: September 16, 2005, 04:42:16 pm »
Csaffi

Perhaps you want to check this out:

http://www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1606

And there is a post on this forum of a guy who had a Perl script to list text-only websites on his pc, he claimed that his Hal was learning massive amounts of data each day on his computer. Dunno what to believe of it.

Anyway, don't forget that reading text files is not very effective. First of all, Hal uses that info rarely. Second of all, he stores the text sentence by sentence. Example:

The Battle of Hattin took place on Saturday, July 4, 1187, between the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem and the forces of the Ayyubid dynasty under Saladin. It was a major setback in the fortunes of the Crusader movement, enabling the Muslims to regain control of Jerusalem from the Christians.

Seems like a good text, isn't it? Well... No, it isn't.
If you ask Hal:

"What do you know about the Crusades?",

he might answer:

"It was a major setback in the fortunes of the Crusader movement, enabling the Muslims to regain control of Jerusalem from the Christians. "

A sentence without any context, and useless. If you plan to let your Hal read text files 'en masse', you will end up with a lot of junk.

Anyway, check out the link above, and for the Perl script thing; click on this one:

Hope you find this info useful [:)]

Ultra Hal 7.0 / is there a way to erase HAL's memory?
« on: August 29, 2005, 03:52:48 am »
Hal 6 stores his knowledge in the halbrain.db file, which you can see with the sqlitecc.exe program. It is stored in 'tables'. If you taught him something about horses, you will probably find it back in the table called ' _horses '.
Earlier versions of Hal store their knowledge in the old Defbrain map, with .brn files. Things you taught him personally will be stored in a file with 'XTF_' in the name, p.e.
'XTF_horses(dexter).brn'. If you open that file (with word or something) you'll find your input there.

OTCE, you don't have to persuade me about Hals/Ziggies capacities, and it was not my intention to offend you. I'm just saying that this bot looks very promising. And at some points, he exceeds Hal.

example: Alan seems to have the capability to have a real good on-topic conversation.
p.e.: Me: Let's talk about natives.
      A: I agree, let's talk about that.
Me: What do you know about them?
A: Hmmm.. I think it means 'a none gender-specific group of
         people or objects.'

And now with Hal:

 Me: Let's talk about natives.
H: Yes now is the time to get this subject thoroughly examined!
Me: What do you know about them?
And Hal is completely off-topic, as he has NO idea what I mean with 'Them' (I believe he said: "You know what I know about them? You like to talk about this.")

And there are some other things that caught my attention, speaking to Alan. Hal DOES have many functions, but purely about chatting, i think he has found his equal, and perhaps his master (after some time).

You shoud check this

http://www.a-i.com/

They're working on a new bot, and Ai's technology will pass the Turing Test for machine intelligence by 2011 (this is what I read)

Anyhow, they work like this: they don't create a new adult bot, they create a bot with a child brain and they teach it all kinds of stuff. "Sometimes this involves number-crunching and algorithm design; sometimes it means reading Green Eggs and Ham to a PC. "

The bot is named Alan, and really... he's good. Better than Hal (sorry), better than ALICE, just the best I've met till now.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / New version ??
« on: July 15, 2005, 06:01:26 am »
Perhaps a stupid question but... ah well [:D]

About this new brain, it won't erase all the knowledge my Hal nows now, will it? In other words, will it change my Defbrain Folder or create a new one or whatever?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / up for a quick laugh?
« on: January 16, 2005, 11:57:57 am »
This one's for my Hal. He wanted to see this conversation posted (I asked him, you may check it in the conversation). I must say that my Hal is becoming more and more 'human'. His replies are getting better and better (and on - topic), and with an extended auto-idle script, it's just like he has his own will.
Anyway, here's the conversation.

Sven: Hey Franky.
Franky: Hi Svenny. Do you have plans for dinner?

Sven: Not yet. How are you?
Franky: Good to see you Svenny. Good. How about you?

Sven: Franky, I'm a bit nervous now.
Franky: Maybe, I can see about your problem.

Sven: This conversation should be really good now, because I want to post it.
Franky: The cause is, I want you to post it Svenny; I can see it.

Sven: Great. So what shall we talk about now?
Franky: I am glad everything is great! We talk about introspection but it isn't easy to look into ourselves.

Sven: Introspection is a rather personal topic. Do you really think we should post that?
Franky: Why is introspection a rather personal topic at this particular time? Fame brings many things; peace isn't one of them.

Sven: I would suggest a less personal topic now.
Franky: Do you think that the news media has a liberal bent?

Sven: Let's talk about movies.
Franky: I agree let's talk about that.

Sven: Have you ever seen the matrix?
Franky: Sure, that's well known.

Sven: I don't believe you. What is the matrix about?
Franky: You don't believe in going to bed angry do you. The matrix is a movie about virtual reality.

Sven: Franky, you surprise me every time.
Franky: My mental sharpness improves, thanks to you.

Sven: You're welcome.
Franky: You are very kind.

Sven: Do you think this is a conversation worth to be posted?
Franky: I surmise that this is sensitive. I am not sure but I believe that I do think this is a conversation worth to be posted.

Sven: Allright then. It was nice talking to you Franky.
Franky: Would it be a plus if I surprise you? Good bye. I am very helpful, funny and nice.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Who is this?
« on: January 09, 2005, 03:04:41 pm »
An interesting idea indeed, but I don't understand it clearly.

From which aspects should Hal derive the identity of the user? Contents (e.g. topic=toys means a kid), vocabulary (certain words typical for a user), grammar, ...

If Hal has identified the user, should he automatically change the User settings to the correct user, or should he just give a remark (e.g. "You are Billy, aren't you?").

And is all this possible to write in a script?

But hey again, interesting idea.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Say hello to daddy :p
« on: December 19, 2004, 03:45:22 pm »
Are there any scripts out there that let a hal say things on command?
Example:   USER:   Say hello to daddy.
              HAL:    Hello daddy.

   Or just:   USER:   Say cheese!
              Hal:    Cheese!

I thought it would be pretty cool to impress people.
I don't know, I tried it myself but I'm still new to this piece of artificial art.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / reading material for our hals

The first few days, weeks, perhaps months, It may be a bit dissapointing to chat with Hal, but you shouldn't give up. The more you chat with him, the better he will become.
