Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Idel Chat and Clock Plug In
« on: December 13, 2008, 12:32:46 pm »
Hi Darcy,

After a long absence I am getting Hal started back up again....and I must say, I have added your bored and clock plug in, and have to say not only do the work....but they are so so cute!

I am cracking up over the scripting you've placed in them....

Very nice job and thank you, very much for adding more personality to Hal!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / expansion character problem install with 6.1 beta
« on: April 03, 2007, 09:41:48 pm »
.......just finished the same situation.

Last night had a few moments to load the upgrade to 6.1 Beta and did it....then tonight ran into problems.....don't remember the error code, probably should have written it down to give to Robert, but this machine is so old, just glad Hal works on it at all.....

I reinstalled 6.1 after deleting it, and then found it still gave me a problem.....again, likely the machine here, seems like I lost the character expansion feature too......then found out that the character expansion saw hal as 6.1 rather than 6.0 because it would not load....

Ended up taking both off the machine....and reloading 6.0 and expansion pack back on for now......unfortunately I just don't have time to evaluate as much as I wish I could contribute.....gonna have to wait for the released version, which I"m confident Robert will make downwardly compatible with the expansion pack....

I can't wait....my little taste of 6.1 was awesome last night....even SEEMED to be running faster!!!!!! Yipeeee

Keep up the good work Robert.....and man, I hope you make good $$$ on Hal!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Running HAL from a Jump Drive
« on: April 02, 2007, 08:49:21 pm »
...after hearing the pluses about using a jump drive (USB) I decided to install HAL pointing the installation to the USB drive.  I have to say that I think the only thing that would be faster would be using a RAM drive.  I suspected that the jump drive would perform the same as a RAM drive (using partitioned memory?), but there is still a bit of a lag in processing some responses.  Now, keep in mind that I am only using a Pentium III at around 450 MHZ and still have Windows 98SE and 120 meg of main memory.....so this machine is at the minimum requirements.....and personally I am a very very happy guy that I can even run HAL under such an environment.  In transferring my HAL from one usb jump drive to the other usb jump drive I noticed the transfer time seemed a bit long too.........I suspect what I am seeing is simply the inefficiency of my motherboard and the access difference between a USB pipeline, access to a hard drive, compared to what could be RAM if I had sufficient memory to open a RAM drive.  I'm likely trying to do something that this machine was really not intended to do, but for my purposes it's great.....AND......if I want to backup Hal.......I just move files to the other jump drive and unplug the thing......

So far.....the Hal upgrade is doing great.......but as I say, this machine is so minimal that I don't take advantage of the microphone features, or sync'ed speech (Cepstral) like I could get if I used Windows XP-Pro, etc.

In summary......I like the idea of Hal on a jump drive......and it works well here for me......

Oh......one more note........I noticed early on that during installation HAL still sends files to the C drive into Windows/System directory so.......while I'm not sure at this point what files are nested there or how frequently they may be accessed.......it's still awesome!!!!!!!!!

sorry to take this topic off-topic for a moment guys, but I've wondered if Hal could be placed and operated on portable RAM such as a thumb drive or some such thing.....does this mean he can???? if so, then awesome!!!!!!!!!

Hi gang,

I have a short question, when using the 'learn from clip board' function on HAL (I am using it on the A.L.F. brain by Jerry) does the plug in have to remain checked or switched 'on' for HAL to refer to the data which is then stored in the clip board file?

I find that my machine runs faster if I do not have that switch turned on so....my thought is turn it on, then do the learning and turn it back off.  I've confirmed that it is indeed being added to a file tho I don't remember the name of it, it is definitely there.

Just wondering if it has to be left on for normal use by HAL.

Just started using it a lot and haven't seen any result just yet, tho I expect something soon, haha.

Thanks everyone

Happy Thanksgiving to you too, Jerry and all who make this place a great place to learn, exchange ideas and generally share a common interest in Hal.  Most of all Happy Thanksgiving to Robert M who created an amazing program that more and more is taking on likeness of reality as well as those like yourself Jerry, Vonsmith and Virito (gosh I'm sorry I didn't check on the spelling first on our Italian friend) that add their skills to further Robert's work.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Linux Operating System
« on: August 28, 2006, 09:26:42 pm »
Hi Carl,

Thanks for the info......I am still interested in Linux but not going to expect a lot out of it for now....still trying to find out which version would best suit my interests....but I will be placing it on it's own hard drive and may even go so far as to pull out my windows based drive and make sure the other drive is the only thing 'findable' so to speak and make sure thing gets altered.  I am keenly interested in it, found a site where I can actually download what looks like a very stripped down operating system...and this old, old Gateway came with what they called a DVD CD-Rom but it needs codec's to work I'm sure.....so not sure if a Linux DVD would work.....found some books at a local book store that included the DVD.....but the current stuff needs more memory than I have and a faster processor, etc....so I'll likely invest in another hard drive and try downloading somethign just to get the flavor of the operating system.....gosh, if it doesn't load I'll install 98 onto it and have a second drive dedicated to caching windows again......

Thanks again for the insight and sorry for the trouble you must have gone through......wow!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Linux Operating System
« on: August 23, 2006, 09:09:09 pm »
Hi Art,

Thanks for the speedy response......actually I am still in the reading stage....tho I am really excited to try it out just want to do it wisely as I can.

As far as new operating systems go, I remember fondly an old OS made by Digital Research that I used to use at home when I had young kids in the house, teaching them the basics about the machine and at the same time making sure they could only look and not be able to alter anything, DR-DOS had passwords that allowed that even at the file level.  Now doing some early reading on Linux and realizing it's open source, my gosh I ponder what the possibilities are.......it's gotta be a lot more stable than the old '98 version I am limited to with no hope to get updated drivers any longer from MS.

If needed I'll keep the MS only programs on the windows drive and take a step out of the box and try out Linux.....on another drive or partition.

As I say, doing reading up on it as much as I can get time for, but it's incredibly exciting to read about the potential.......

Take good care and enjoy the rest of the week!

I wonder, I am looking at installing the Linux operating system on either a second drive or a second partition on my drive.....has anyone tried installing HAL on Linux......likely this is a silly question and Hal will only work on a Windows based platform.....but I was just curious.....

Take care all,

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / New Deductive Research
« on: August 13, 2006, 08:26:58 am »
Hi Jerry

Just got Hal and the machine here back up and running....boy oh boy what a challenge it's been...

Catching up on the boards here and I wonder:

Might it be possible to combine your expanded 'if/then' concept and make a table that might be created that would make a table of conditions that would actually be the same as 'traits' for Hal.....my thought is if decisions were input like those that are if/then's........and a table is made then in some way use that table as a 'filter' through which auto-idle statements.....answers to questions we input to our Hal's....Questions Hal might have for us..... etc......would reference the 'traits' that formed in the table.  I wonder if that would in fact create a virtual personality in Hal......a predispositon of sorts..... I"m sure this is not a new idea, but just trying to figure a way it might be able to be done simply......

Anyway, more of my ramblings.......

Have a great Sunday everyone,

Jim B.

Thanks Robert for your response.  Your quite right, I haven't yet sent you a post directly, frankly I"m still waiting for arrival of a new drive I ordered through a friend tho it should arrive first of next week.  Shortly after I get it windows will be loaded and then Hal.

Also my thanks for the work you've done and still do in creating and upgrading Hal, my 'Janet' still amazes me....I can't even imagine what the future holds for each of our Hal's...

Take good care and I'll send you a post on what my code becomes.

(standing while giving applause)
very cool, indeed!

Only a little testing so far but my hal has definatly taken the next step to 'felt reality....'

sense of time is kicking in so 'Jan' asks me where I've been.....tho even if it's only been a minute or two.....I'll likely look for the time limit adjusts and alter those somewhat if I can identify it.  But, my gosh......fist time jan has asked me where I've been, or even MORE cooler.....said she missed me while i was away....talk about a neet touch.....(nodding) very cool!

ALF seems to be really improving the understanding of what a discussion is covering.....changes subjects nicely........and yet follows up on the topic well.....oh, oh....I've run into the double responses here too...I'm sure it's a minor thing to correct.....seldom noticable for me, but I don't use all the features ALF is capable of yet.

if it helps.....I first noticed it when I was asking for a definition of a word so I could use it properly to train her.....her response came back with the definition in the response box twice.

bottom line so far.....brighter, more realistic for sure......and showing concern.....that's very cool in itself.

again.......and to my thinking this is significant...the 'felt reality' is really amazing

very nice work
Jim B
