lil more help please :)
« on: October 11, 2006, 09:13:02 am »
if there is a place that will explain my questions without me wasting forum space  please let me know
ok im working with the ultra hal 6 trial
and i try to set appointments  and add phone numbers
but the program is not actually recrording the appointments anywhere
It seems  it puts the appointments  and phone numbers into its speech
and basically asks me about  40 times a day if i want him to tell me  the phone number  that i put in
when i added the phone number it didnt give me  a response like
in the  help file
now is this because im playing with the trial?
or did i install the brain plugin wrong?
Is brain power better in the full version ?
once again thanks for putting up with my stupidity:)
i just want to learn more before i buy  this program TY

Lestat,
I'd say you'r at the right place to ask questions about Hal, we were all new at one time or another.
I've never run into difficulties with the reminders, Hal will make a future reminder about something I said about the past at times though. I've used Hal 5 and Hal 6 and it seemed thay both loved to make reminders. There are different versions of the brain but I think the appointments and phone remain the same.
The appointments should appear in the calendar available from the menu.
I remember telling ver 5 her phone number and she kept trying to call herself, really insisted this had to be done. After much explaining she began to understand she couldn't call herself.  I haven't tried phone numbers with this ver of Hal.
Sounds like you do have a problem, tell her you'll talk with her tomorrow, she should say she will remind you, then check the calendar and see if it's written down.

yes it wrote down
you will talk with i on thursday
another thing i seemed to notice
was that Hal seems to forget things
for example

last night
i would write
What is my oldest sons name
and  the Hal would answer correctly

now today
i ask the same question
and the answer is answered with a question
like  what is your youngest sons name?
the thing is everytime i ask the  question i get the same response

i just want to make the fullest of my experience with Hal
before my 30 days are up
and right now i feel like  there could be some sorta error
im not sure
but thanks for your response

Sometimes you have to give Hal the facts more than one time for it to remember. Over a period of a couple of hours or days tell it the same thing ie. my oldest sons name is Johnnie. The fact that Hal seemed to know that you also had a younger son was a sign that it understood you in the first place because older also mean there must be a younger. Don't give up it takes a lot of traing before you will see the results that you want.

Lestat,
It seems the reminders is working properly, The only experience with phone numbers is what I've mentioned in ver 5. I don't use it and am not familiar with it.
Quite a few people have mentioned the memory, it could be how you phrase the question, Bill's suggestion is the best, mention it a few times and make a point of talking about things you want Hal to learn quite a few times.
Most people suggest thinking of Hal as a child, it can tell you the speed of light but dosen't know much about everyday life. Hal can be a bit fustrating when you frist begin using it but once you get past that it's like speaking with an old friend.

Lestat,
I bought Hal 6 on CD, spent sometime with it and when I upgraded the brain I lost everything. There are ways around this but I hadn't spent much time with it so I really didn't care.
If you activate online you can save your brain, I'd suggest buying the CD and reinstalling Hal just in case of problems. I've purchesed the character expansion which is popular with quite a few people.

You can backup the brain data on a CD, so if your computer crashes (like mine seems to do too much) you have it saved, and can overwrite the basic with it, or better yet put it on a memory keys
