Hi there.
I have been following Ultra Hal for a number of years and have run it a few time on Windows.
I do not use Windows anymore, But I love the idea of Ultra Hal.
What I would like to know is if anyone has had and success running Ultra Hal 6.2 on Linux using WINE.
I have been able to get Ultra Hal 6.2 to start and speak. However I cannot enter any text.
Any other Linux users out there who has been able to run this?
My system is
Ubuntu 9.04 and WINE 1.1.20
Any thoughts
Thanks.

It might be easier for you to partition a small amount of your hard disk and format it with windows. In that way you could toggle back and forth as you desired, creating the best of both worlds.

Hi
I do have WindowsXP in a Vmware session.
This runs very well, however I do not have sound.
Dual booting windows is not an option for me as it is too painful
to reboot every time I want to use HAL.
I know Robert is very busy with maintaining UltraHal.
Perhaps it would be possible if he could check against the WINE Libraries. A bit like Google did with Picassa.
Kind regards.

I got Ubuntu and Windows 7 dual boot now. I like the best of both worlds.
It would be nice if Hal worked under Ubuntu. But I only reserved 9GB of space for Ubuntu, so adding too many programs would fill it up.

Mark,
Have you ever tried Fedora, for Hal or anything?
I have been taught that Fedora has the most corporate potential
and you basically get the most of Red Hat
-
No, not yet. Fedora works with HAL?
-
Mark,
Haven't tried nor have I heard of success or failure with Fedora and Hal
I have removable SATA's for school and I took the accepting bay out of my computer (Fedora is on school drive)
If you do give it a try ,, it is larger than CD ya got to use a DVD disk if you are going to download and burn to save. I think 11 is just released or still in beta. (I don't like betas)
-
I found Fedora and Ubuntu to be similar, except Ubuntu has games.
-
Mark,
I find it hard to evaluate an OS based on a few games.
-
I meant the layout. I could not find the power buttons on screen with Fedora, so I had to used the power button on the box to bring up the options. Fedora has a cooler background, but takes longer to load on my computer. (of course, I was loading from DVD)
(I was able to find the power button onscreen with Ubuntu.
Ubuntu seems to have a lot more features, too, and even if I did prefer Fedora, I think I am committed to Ubuntu, unless I can add Fedora to the boot menu.
I guess whatever a person prefers. If i was able to use the cool Fedora background.......... [:D]
I'm not saying one is better than the other, just different in the features.
-
Mark,
sorry but I have to read over 700 pages on Fedora ( I am in a Linux class)and this is why I brought it up. fedora seems to have the most ties with Red Hat and I too found unbuntu to be a good OS but in comparison, the loadable features are more extensive hence the DVD
no lotto or cloak and dagger here... just suggestions as to the possibilities with Hal.
So if you had a windows server and a Linux terminal I wonder if it could be pushed through the server and ran on the terminal??
I think I asked this once before, but I have yet to hear anybody test it. and leave the Wine and cheese out of it.
I refuse to reach 'critical mass' and I am centered, calm when writing.
if you could use fedora Background ,, what for something like a haptek application or a movie?? I don't understand? Hmm Try it!

maybe so, we'll see.

My latest effort to get Ultra Hal 6.2 running under Linux
My platform
Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit version
bcl43@supernova:~$ wine --version
wine-1.1.21
The program installs after after a few reties.
Starting Ultra Hal shows that it is startings however it disapears. After about 5 minutes it starts.
I can then go through the configurations steps and get to the Ultra Hal window.
The 3d image of HAL is missing. But Hal Speaks!!! :-)
The issue I am really having is Ultra Hal ignores everything I type.
except for when I just press enter with no text.
He says " Please say something"
Anyway Not ideal , but it does show that it's at least possible to get Hal running under Linux.
Anyone else had any luck?

i had a similiar issue with getting steam and halflife2 workin under wine...it wasn't transmitting my keystrokes properly....try installing the microsoft fonts package....it is a proprietary blob but it may give you the fonts you need...worth a shot.

Hello. I am having the same issues with Ultra Hal under Wine. I'm also using Ubuntu (Jaunty), 32 bit.
The install took a long time, but it did install and Ultra Hal runs. But same problem with the lack of responding; unless I actually type nothing at all, in which case I also get the "why don't you say something?"
I'm glad there are others playing around with this, and I am going to keep tinkering.

This subject has been discussed several times in the past.
UltraHal was not, and most likely will not be written for
Linux (regardless of flavor).
There are many .dll files and registry entries that Hal
uses to run. I'm not sure exactly how WINE would handle
these but I'd bet, not too well.
I've tried in the past just for kicks on Mandrake and
more recently Ubuntu and neither was successful.
It is what it is.

Hi
Many thanks to all the responses so far.
As I have said I have been following UltraHAL for many years now.
I have also seen various requests in the past to get Ultra Hal working on Linux.
Short of Ultra Hal being ported to Linux native code (I wish, but unlikely) WINE is the next best bet.
What I am looking for is other Linux users who would Like to run Ultra Hal on their system of choice.
WINE is a system to allow Windows programs to run on Linux.
It does this intercepting the system calls made by Windows programs to Windows dll's and runs the corresponding Linux System call.
WINE has made leaps and bounds in the last few years.
Currently many people run World Of Warcraft on WINE (my brother included) If this program runs I do not see any issue on getting Ultra HAL working on WINE.
The point of this thread is to pool our Knowledge to try and get Ultra Hal working. I have added my efforts to the WINE Application database.
I will also raise bug requests to the WINE devs where I find problems.
Please no reponses that it will never work. You may be right, but that should not stop people from trying.
One thing that is aa real possibility is the WINE development environment. What this does is when Ultra HAL is compiled from source instead of using the windows Dlls etc, it is compiled against the WINE libraries. This does two things, one it has a greater chance of running on windows and Linux without modification and two makes it easier to find any bugs in WINE code.
This was done by Google and others to get programs working on Linux
See Google Picassa as an example.
Anyway All other Linux users, Lets see if we can pool our knowledge together and get Ultra HAl working on Linux

Word. I'll keep checking back here, and tinkering with Ultra Hal in WINE.

I posted a thread on this topic a while back. I reached the same point as the rest of you; almost got it working, but no response to typing.
I took it as far as I could; I don't know how to take it any further. I'm a Linux user, not a programmer/coder. But I'm watching this thread with interest, in case anyone else makes more progress. It would be really super to have Ultra HAL on Linux.
BTW, I have gotten Ultra HAL to work in an XP virtual machine (Virtual Box) on Ubuntu Linux. Right now that's the only option I can see for a Linux user.

Hi Again
My update on my latest test of UltraHal on Linux.
This time I am using the following setup
Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit version
WINE wine-1.1.24
UltraHal 6.2
I am sorry to say, But still no real progress.
Ultra Hal installs with errors.
He speaks, but does not accept keyboard input.
Well until the next version :-)

I tried installing with Cedega. Nothing yet.
So far I installed it, and received one "missing dll" notice (msvbvm60.dll). Now there is an unspecified error and it is crashing before even loading.
At least on the face of it, UH seems to fare better in WINE.

I also tried to install it with Fedora and have had no success.

I have UltraHal Assistant installed on an Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit desktop with Oracle VM VirtualBox V3.2.4 supporting a WinXP SP3 image.... just make sure you do not use the Forticlient Firewall as this will break Hal and IE8 on a Hal Install
Yes you can have the BEST of BOTH worlds ... LOL
