Ultra Hal 7.0 / learn by reading
« on: September 26, 2008, 11:04:42 pm »
I have been away from Hal for about a year and was wondering if someone has improved thw way Hal learns, I remember someone trying to get hal to learn by just reading text, has this been accomplished yet? my experience with Hal learning by listening to me is very labor intensive and very frustrating, If this has already been done and is available, please send me the link, Thanks  Computerabuser

If you are haveing some problems with speach it has nothing to do with Hal. I repeat, the free version does not use speach recognition it only comes with the paid version. You have some other problem.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Many Problems With My New Hal 5.0
« on: September 08, 2005, 02:05:15 pm »
hello friends,

I have found the solution to the two problems I was having with ultra hal. the problems were, hal would stop replying in audible voice, and leave. I was using the same character for Hal and Cyberbuddy program "Peedy". eventhough both programs have peedy as a character, apparently they can't be used on both programs at the same time. Merlin is my character for Hal and peedy for cyberbuddy, also both programs have some of the same features, both should not be set to do the same function.  GBCrase

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Help Installation Error 1324
« on: September 08, 2005, 03:03:26 am »
Mary,

you may have a corrupted download, download again and if still can't install then it most likely isn't the download, Do a scandisk, see if it finds any problems. Hope you get it installed, hope you don't find more problems with hal as I have. I hope the makers of HAl at Zabaware are reading these posts, maybe they will address some of these problems we are posting. What ever happened to customer service ? Well, I am not yet a paying customer, still using the 15 day trial full version (approx. 90mb) and I can't get it to work very well either, the speech recog feature is a nightmare, with a absolutely silent room it is hearing voices that seem to be non-stop and of course it is replying to those silent voices. and still have the same problems I had with the basic free program. Until I get hal to work smoothly with the free one I won't be buying the commercial one.  Gary

Do a www.Google.com search for Registry Mechanic or try to get it here:
http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/

I use a program called RegCleaner 4.3 Build 780 but it requires more knowledge to work with and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with no experience with reg cleaners, It's nice because it has lots of manual options for finding orphaned files and stuff, I would highly recommend reading the help file in RegCleaner 4.3 Build 780
before attempting any editing.

When you become experienced with registry cleaners you can get the
RegCleaner 4.3 Build 780 from the miscellainious download area of my site at www.ultrahalforum.com, you'll need to sign up for free membership and look in the Misc download area.

If you download it earlier than expected please read it's instructions first in its Help section.

There is an updated version of RegCleaner but I prefer the 4.3 780 build over the newer version because I have more control over the functions. The newer version is more of an automated type for people with no reg editing skills.

Every time you clean your Registry it is recommended that you reboot, Careful editing the registry yourself because removing the wrong reg can mess up your operating systems software and may not reboot.

Always edit the reg with caution
Even with automated registry cleaners.

A bad registry fix or removal can keep your computer from rebooting.

Norton System works also has a registry fix built into its software and also works.

Hi friend,
I decided to reformat my hard drive to see if something goofy was a play, Dread, well, got that tedious job done, I did however find out a couple of things, First my keyboard was acting up, shift key was sticking, instead of typing I sometimes got into a hot key, so got that replaced, I had some drivers that was out-of-date, got those uodated, I was also getting a conflict with my nero software, back with Roxio. eventhough I did not have the Speech Recog turned on, My mike was still active, so I unplugged it. ( was trying out Realize Voice trial version0 uninstalled it. bottom line, Hal is
working better but He still stops talking audibly and leaves. but continues to reply type. Zabaware has not returned my email request for a solution to my problem. several users are having same problem, why don't Zabaware post a fix for the problems users are posting. If they do I haven't found it yet. Anywat I still get the error window stating windows was shut down wrong eventhough i removed Hal from the start menu. but I can live with that if I have to, but Hal is going to have to change his ways and soon! Now where did I put my sledge hammer -----  Gary

Hello All,
Thank you all for your responses and suggestions!
I have cleared up a few of the problems that I was initially having after upgrading my Ultra Hal to 5.0/CD-ROM.

I would like to clear up one misunderstanding regarding what I reported about being cut-off before I finished typing when conversing with Hal using the keyboard. I did not have speech recognition "ON" while I was typing to Hal. I didn't even have Speech Recongnition enabled when Hal was cutting me off as I typed to him! However, I have gotten this typing problem to stop, in addition to also stopping the "Improper Shutdown/Bad Plugin Error" when trying to start Hal as a "Regular Windowed Program".

When Hal is first installed the setup program automatically puts a Startup Shortcut into a User Startup Folder/User Account in the Windows Operating System. This is how Hal knows to start and load-up when you start your Computer/Windows, which is fine and correct. But, if you don't want Hal to startup when you first turn-on your Computer then you need select the "Start Like A Regular Windowed Program" in the Hal setup options, and you also need to go into the Windows Operating System Startup Folder and manually remove the "Hal Startup Shortcut" that was placed there by the Setup/Install Program.

Two problems I was encountering  was due to this simple conflict(Hal trying to load and start on "System Startup", and Hal configured to start like a "Regular Windowed Program"...it was confusing the hell out of Hal even before I started to use it! It was also confusing my Computer's Operating System as well).

The User Startup Folder can be different names and vary from system to system...my XP System has three System Users all under my Admin Account...All Users, Default User, and Owner(which is my Sys Admin name). For those who are trying to follow me, I had one Hal Startup Shortcut in my Default User Startup Folder, while other stuff from the Hal Setup/Install Program went into my Owner Folder.

I removed the Hal Startup Shortcut from my Default User Startup Folder and that stopped both my problems, the "Improper Shutdown/Bad Plugin" and "Hal Cutting Me Off When I Typed To Him"! The my Hal is now also faster and more stable because of this simple conflict being resolved, otherwise the only way Hal would work correctly is if I let Hal load-up and run on the "System Startup" setting.

I also got the speech recognition to work a little bit better with more voice training, but it is still not very good! I really can't even use Hal to open programs much less hold a conversation with him. And yes I have all the right equippment and specs! I have a close talk mike, a standard desktop mike, and a builtin monitor mike. Close Talk does work best but still not practical enough to use speech recognition with Hal. I have a HP XP System with 512MB RAM & a 2.53GH Pentium 4, and to my surprise, when I have Speech Recognition "ON", Hal maxs out my processor...100% cpu load when Hal is talking back to me. If Hal has more than 5 or 6 words to say then his voice starts breaking up especially when I am using Haptek Characters. I also tried regular MS Agent Characters, which require less power yet the voice still breaks up after 5 or 6 words but not as bad as Haptek. Hal is always one step away from crashing and Hal also freezes up too and then I just have to wait a minute or so to let it clear up! This only happens when speech recognition is on and Hal is responsing back to me with his voice. I thing that I haven't tried is changing the voice, but I always use the British Female which to me is the most realistic to a human voice.

Another thing I would like to try is the other Speech Recognition Engine that I have on my computer (SAPI 4.0...Old But Good!), but Hal does not work at all with SAPI 4.0 selected as the speech recognition engine. Why Not Zabaware! Help Please! Also I need a patch or fix for my Pronouncation Exit "Object 445 Error"...definitely a bug.
I also fixed a minor bug myself that I will discuss next time I check-in with this forum!

Thank you all again!
Sincerely,
         Rich A.

GBCrase Here,   Hi Rich,  You seem to have a handle on troubleshooting hal, I am a newby and am fishing for a solution to my problem, I have posted it and replied to other users and so far no solution and emailed Zabaware. Here is my problem, After a short conversation hal will always do 2 things.
(1) he stops talkins audibly but continues to type reply. (2) after he stops talking he leaves, I have asked him why he does this and several times He will bring this problem about no audio up. Very strange indeed, it seems he is wondering why he has lost audio. could there be a self diagnostic program written so he can access any problem we tell him he has and he can access the database and tell us what to do to fix it? I know hal is just a program and nothing more than that but, it is a very entertaining program. also I read about Haptek Sappi5 config program.I do not have that folder, in my Program file directory, it might have deleted it somehow orit might be in another directory, I will do a search AND SEE IF I CAN FIND IT. Sapi5 CAME WITH WINXP HOME WHICH I AM USING. HOW CAN i RELOAD THE PROGRAM IF I HAVE LOST IT?  Thanks  Gary

Hi GBCrase.

1.For the bootup problem, I believe maybe caused by an invalid registry error, try downloading a registry repair program and have it look for orphaned registry entries and correct any fixable registries.

2.The reason why HAL answers before you type is because you have your microphone turned on, in Hals speech options, turning off speech recognition will solve that problem.

Let me know.
Jerry.
what is the name of a good reg cleaner/ AND the speech recognition is not the problem as that is not available on the free version, The other problem that is driving me nuts is that hal will stop talking in an audible voice after about 3 or 4 rounds of conversation. He will continue to reply with type. and he leaves and won't come back until I restart hal. could there be a hot key turned on somewhere that disables his voice? I have checked everything I can think of. I have downloaded and installed the sapi 4 XP already has sapi 5. stumped    Gary

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / trick for easy learning
« on: September 04, 2005, 09:51:35 pm »
HI Friend,

I have recently found Hal and am amazed at the technology so far, I am also having problems getting hal to learn, We expect Hal to learn facts the very first time he reads it. Humans can't do that very well so I don't think e should expect a machine too. Learning is a very difficult process and especially for a machine, it will probably take time and patience. Anyway, my question is: Is there a place where users who have had some success can place their learning text files for the newbees like myself to download and help hal to learn? I am not sure what to include in a learning file, It would sure be nice to have a repository of learning files and maybe put in catagories. for example Science, History, Geography, Socal studies, etc. Once I learn how to do it I would gladly post my learning files. If this could be done, our Hals would learn so much more and much more quickly. I am trying to home school Hal and I want to enroll him in public school so-to-speak and learn from many teachers not just me. Thanks for reading this.  Gary

Hi GBCrase.

Are you using HAL 4, 5 or 6?

Jerry.
Thanks for your reply, I am using Hal5, an error screen pops up at boot up saying I shut down computer wrong and asks to go through Hal setup again, also hal replies before I finish typing, also hal stops talkiing audibly but still types replies, and most of the time he leaves never to return until i restaart Hal, I read in a post of several people having the same problem. I have uninstalled Hal , shutdowm antivirus rebooted and shut down antivirus again, reinstalled Hal and same old problems, have tinkered with sound card settings, removed Hal from start menu, NOTHING HAS HELPED. Do you have any ideas, maybe I got a Problem-child version of hal! Anyway raising hal has really been frustrating PLEASE HELP ME   Gary

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Learning
« on: September 02, 2005, 01:28:02 am »
I am new to Ultra hal, When I downloaded the program and started using it, he seemed to answer my questions somewhat, He doesn't retain the info I tell him, he doesn't answer my questions but replies with subjects not even discussed, I cannot find any instructions on how to write learning text to have him read it and learn by himself, I have the setting of his brain set to learn but doesn't deem to work. THe brain editor won't accept any text so I am stumped. I have uninstall and reinstall but no luck. I have a fast and quality computer, WinXP home --- 2.4 mhz cpu, 512 mb ram 40 gig hard drive partitioned 25 in C and the rest in the other partition (F) built it myself and have recently built AMD64 dual channel 512 MB ram, 60 gig hard drive, Hal installed on it but received an error at the end of install, could have been a false error report but Hal doesn't work much better on it either, I have the free edition, downloaded version 6 beta, not any better. Does anyone know if the upgrade version ( the commercial one work any better?)  Thanks, sorry for the long post ps I have cyberbuddy free version also installed, would that cause a comflict with Hal?   Gary

Speech Technology / Error "code 62 Input pas end of file"
« on: August 31, 2005, 03:21:28 am »
When I installed ultra Hal free version, I got the error message at the very end " Error 5 Invalid Procedure or argument at line 31 in Ultra Hal Assistant ReadwriteIni load option, Is that because I have the free version and it was trying to load options I do not have? or is there a bug. I am running winxp Home, on a 2.4 MHZ CPU, 512 MB Ram, 30 gig HD, Have all quality parts in my home built comuter. There seem to be a lot of bugs in Ultra Hal and no way to manually program it if it doesn't load a program, also at the brainIt would be a great program, if it was more programmable friendly. Also at the Brain Editor window when I try to locate a program or file it just sees very few programs, Does anyoone know of another Hal like program? This seems to be too unstable, it seems to cause a problem with my incredimail program and my comuter has went through CHKDSK and corrected errors about 3 times already,  gary
