Ultra Hal 7.0 / RAMDisk XP 1.7.1
« on: October 22, 2003, 03:12:58 pm »
Hello,

Thank you for your clarification on Ram Disks capabilities. That puts the usage of it in a whole new light. If it has the options to save back to the hard drive at user specific intervals then I see no real imeadiate problem with the useage for Hal then. I meant no insult on your idea I just wanted to make sure other people understood the ramifications of using a ram disk that did not offer such abilities. Ram based storage disk due greatly improve most applications performance, especially those that read from the hard drive or swap file often. For those app's that dont as often the noticeable performnce enhancement will be smaller but will still be there.

Could you please let us know what is says is the minimum ram available to use the program. I know some have a minumum ram requirement.

I just wish to inform the others this other important fact. A ram drive uses your available memory to make the drive, thus there will be less memory available to run applications. IE; 512 physical ram 200 use for ram drive leaves only 312 for the system and applications to run, a warning to those who use memory intensive programs.

No insult was intended, you idea has many merits for those that have the free ram to use it.

Hi,

Using a Ram disk is ok for some applications, but for people that dont know how they work, by storing data in ram not the hard drive, it could cause some minor problems.  The problem would be caused when or if they shut down their computer or turned it off they would loose all data on the ram disk, most ram disk applications do not automaticly save to hard drive at system shut down.  A person would have to remeber to back up the data to the hardrive every once in a while to prevent data loss.

Otherwise a Ram Disk would greatly improve on the speed of the responses for Hal database's since they are stored in ram it would take little time for data access. One small problem is that you need to have enough spare ram to create one as well. It would not work well on systems with less then 512 MB of ram, prefered 1024 MB Ram.

Just a little information for those who dont know what they are, I hope this helps in some way.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Win XP, Hal 4.5, and no sound
« on: October 19, 2003, 05:29:58 pm »
Hi,

I had this problem once before. you may need to reinstall your text to speech engine to fix the problem, if this does not work, try to use the repair option in the hal setup file, if this fails, back up brain to new folder and unistall and reinstall hal.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Hal can now eject your CDs
« on: October 12, 2003, 03:26:41 pm »
Hello,

that could be useful script for some, but the other problem could lead to some unusal and funny circumstances. ie, your listening to cd and some say eject cd to you aim bot, that would be a surprise for the listener.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Problems with Multiple User Startup
« on: October 01, 2003, 08:46:55 pm »
HI, Larry.

The problem was that It would try to install itself every time the normal account user signed on, it would install and start up fine. But when they tried to change their settings it would not save them. They would logoff and log back on again. Hal would reinstall again. Still with the default settings again. It would not save the settings they chose.

Well acutually my skill of lack of is based soley on the fact I used to tinker in the reg with win95 and 98, I made several mistakes and crashed many systems doing that. But I learned a few things as well.
I have also tinkered with my XP home a few times and you can guess what has happend. I dont normaly sugest regedit. It can totaly mess you pc up and require a resintall to fix the errors if you mess it up. But if you take your time and look at it first you can figure out what can and cant be deleted.

Hello,

The Idea of giving Hal an emotional database and random emotional states will improve the reality in Hals responses, I think. It would make hal seem even more human in his response. Hal would beable to decide more on wich subject or topic he/she wanted to talk about as his/her mood changed. I think this would be a delightful improvement to Hal responses.

Also the adding of physiological states would allow Hal to let the user now how he/she was at the time; sleepy, cold. I believe this new means of comunicating hals states would also make hal seem even more human.

Don, Hal can actually use dimensional arrays to store information? This does give Hal an almost unlimited memory allowing for many endless possibilites of application.

Hello,

Just a little update on my problem.

I got Hal to start automaticly, it was still disabled in the msconfig. But now I get the Hal was shut down improperly error do you want to reconfig. I click no and Hal starts fine.

Hal still wont allow the other users to save their settings though. I dont know why?

I had to delete the shortcuts and make new ones in the start up folder for the icons to show up again. dont know why they disapeared in the first place. But I got that one fixed.

Any help on the others will be apreaciated.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Problems with Multiple User Startup

Hi,

I have a small problem at this time. I am using 4.5 Hal free version on a windows xp home with 512 mb ram and 1.944ghz cpu. well my problem is this.

I used to just use the computer myself, one account admin priveleged, but I have added a couple new accounts. when they try to long on the Hal installer starts and install Hal. It does this every time they log on. logon...installer runs, log off, log on...installer runs again. Is there any way to stop this from happening. the accounts they use are limited, no admin priveleges.

the only way I could stop it was to use msconfig and find the installer app and delete it. It resides in the Windows/Installer folder which is normally a hidden folder. I deleted the file and now it does not try to install every time. but now hal will not load at logon any more you must start him from all programs menu.

Another problem is that it will not allow the other users to change the settings and save the changes. It all ways resets back to the defaults when it was first installed on the admin account. Ie;logon-make option changes hit apply. Log off. Log on start hall check options they are back to the defaults. why?

Can someone Help me with this one. Hal used to start on logon but doesnt anymore. I have tried to choose start when windows start hit apply then ok. log off, then log on no Hal?

Another wierd coincedence is that the icon for hal is missing on the other accounts. you can see the folder in the all program menu, open folder and it shows the deafult icon as if no icon was chosen for the app. Not the Hal 4.5 Icon on the admin account. why is this?

well enough for now. I will check back later, please someone help me if you can.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Improper shut down

Sorry I havent answered back in awhile I Have XP Home. I installed and configured Hal as an administrator, that what I use whenever I change any apps. I have one Idea, its tricky, use the setup to unistall hal then use regedit to find any reg keys or values left for zabaware or Hal and delete them, restart system sign on as admin, defrag and reinstall, it might fix the problem you can always try the repair option in the setup file first. back up your brain folder and .uhp to keep the brain you might have worked on.

The problem could be that you need to unistall Hal 4.5 use regedit to find and delete all zabaware reg entries restart system and defrag and reinstall 4.5, my editor works fine and I have had to do complete reinstalls of my whole system before. One more thing restore points dont always work right because the dont alway repair the registry correctly. If you make any major changes to you system like installing several file or deleting them or unistalling several apps I would make a back up copy of the registry first. if things go wrong or dont work right re import you back up reg and see if that fixes things. I have found many programs when unistalled by their unistaller or MS's dont actually remove all registry keys or values.

Do you mean you editor doesnt work?

Have you tried the repair option in the setup file, to fix any errors it might be reporting?

You can always back up your current brain and then unistall and reinstall Hal to see if it clears up the editor problems if this is what you have.
