I definatatly will buy the new speech recognition software. Do I need to download and instal the new 6.2 software, as I already have it as a pre-realase version?
I love it and have spent a lot of time training it already. I just want to be clear on this. Have you made any changes since 6.2.2 pre- realise candidate?
 It's awesome Robert![8D]

The release is the same as the Hal 6.2 RC2 so if you have that you don't need to redownload anything.

If anyone messes up their Hal setup, and needs to re-install, I found that I can uninstall Hal, delete halbrain.db and halbrain.uhp, then reinstall hal.
The installer will not touch your hal6old or hal6upg brains.

I like it working this way.

Yes, the auto-idle plugin works well and I noticed the topic conversational flow seemed to be much improved. The conversation went surprisingly smooth and lasted for a fairly long time.

Nice work, Rob!

I've made a small update to Hal 6.2. It is now at version 6.2.24. If you have 6.2.22 from the last few days and it works there is no need to upgrade to 6.2.24 at this time.

The only thing changed is the criteria it looks at to create a system fingerprint used by the licensing system. It no longer looks at the hard drive model number. Some brands of hard drives and/or bios randomly change the model number reported to Hal and Hal's licensing system reported a corrupted licence every time this happened. Also switching between an administrator and non-administrator account would cause windows to deny access to reading the model number which would also cause a corrupted license. Version 6.2.24 no longer uses the hard drive model so this should prevent a lot of licensing headaches.

Upgrading to 6.2.24 from any previous version of Hal requires reactivation since the criteria has changed.

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah I really think incorporating "Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases" by Grenville Kleiser and the changes to the low quality response routines made a huge difference for Hal.

I downloaded the new version today, and am trying it tonight with the "school brain" I use in the classroom. I am finding that it is working much better than before. The old version would frequently go "silent" when the students were putting in longer technical statments. I also like that the voice engines don't need to be reset each time I open the program.

Can anyone explain to a non-tech the different in the upgraded brain?

Thanks again, my students love the program.

Robert M., I would also like to thank you for giving us Hal & all the vers. you wrote.
I would like to ask if you plan on making the utility to integrate custom brains. The migration worked fine as you said on the default 6.1 Brain but as I mentioned in the other thread it did not migrate well if at all with the '6.1 Enhanced Brain'. I don't remember where the Enhanced Brain came from. The Enhanced Brain always worked fine and never had a timing issue for plugins. I appreciate anything you can suggest.

Thanks again for everything,
raybe

I have just downloaded version 6.2 UltraHal  and I will install it a little later in the evening or possibly tomorrow.  I had looked for clipboard in Windows Vista and was unable to find it.  I did download the text reader for use with UltraHal thinking possibly this could be used in place of the clipboard  which I cannot find.

Thanks for the kind words. In regards to your question about video/face recognition, my work on that hasn't progressed much. I'm pretty interested in that but I think my priorities will be to get Hal 6.3, the new character engine, and then Hal 7.0 out before I continue work on this.

I am using a quad computer with 2 operating systems, vista and XP.
I downloaded Hal 6.2 and installed it in Vista and had problems with it not responding while typing and using speach rec, Dragon 10. Hal also disappears from the screen at times. Dragon works fine by itself.  I just downloaded and installed Hal in XP, since dragon is not in XP I typed in the input. No problems, seens to work fine.

Thanks Robert!
Hal's Looking real good. I have one Question... Is there anyway that I can keep all of my Hals for nostalgia sake, from my Hal5 to Hal6.2? I would like to see from where we came from to where we are.

Robert,
If you get the chance... Ask Hal; "Have you had lunch yet" I find that Hal avoids the Question.

Robert if you get a chance,

why doesn't the char exp pack install with 6.2
it is asking for version 6?

ok fixed that above question by running hal then installing the pack.

why dont the haptek avatars work for vista?
you are advertizing this does right?

Do we have any fixes for this above question?

I did a little more work with Hal in vista,
I am typing the input and using Hal as the character.
Hal disappears from the screen, Hal is speaking stays on about 15 sec after Hal has stopped speaking and may reappear, Hal is unresponsive and windows asks if I would like to shut it down. I looked in the events log but couldn't find anything during the time I was using Hal.  Hal works fine using the brain editor and the problems happen while using hal in the default skin. I'd like to mention the cursor disappears and can stop blinking.

The problem seems to lie with using Hal as the character.  I unselected all of the plugins and removed all characters, worked fine.  Next I selected all of the plugins and it worked fine, next step was to choose merlin as the character and it works fine.
Automaticaly inputed some text before I was finished with the mike off, this will be a problem for me.

One possible way might be to install to a custom directory instead of the default one. Hal's program usually looks for files and such in it's default folders.

You could make a directory called Hal5, Hal60, Hal61, etc.

Worked for me with ver 5 and 6 but not with both running at the same time!

hal works perfectly fine for me if i use a ms agent or 2d avatar, the problems occur using the haptek 3d avatars.i have tried running as admin, setting the programs (both haptek and ultrahal) to xp compatibility, messed around with the .exe and folder options of permissions, even told system not to look in the hap_temp folder where it is suggested these problems are rooted.
afaik, haptek is gone, the forums are down.

i know robert you are still working on the new 3d engine and i for one am looking forward to this, especially if theres the possibility of user made characters,it would be a pity that we cannot get this great haptek player to work considering, even its age,it is still one of the best avatar programs out there.

I have a dual boot computer, Vista on one drive and XP on the other drive. After finding I was having problems with Hal on Vista I downloaded the Hal zip to the other drive with XP. Hal on XP works fine. On Vista Hal works fine with merlin but not the Hal character.
I just tried clicking on the Hal.htr and it appeared in the Hap Player with problems of not responding, the zabaware frog .htr has the same problems.  I went to the Haptek website and downloaded and installed there player with the same results. The Haptek player will work in XP but it dose not mention Vista.  The server for the forum is not working at this time.
I looked in the Hap_temp folder after running Hal.htr and frog.htr and all the files were located in the temp folder as should be.  Dragon is located in Vista and I don't think thay will let me put it in XP also.

To correct the problem with Hal inputting the text automatically, you must go into the general options and  unselect the speech recognition,  this will turn off the automatic input of the text and turning off the microphone will not turn off the automatic input.

I went to the site that the 602 download is on but wasn't sure just exactly I was getting myself into. I have already paid for my copy of Hal and do not want to lose that money by downloading this 6.2. It looked to me like free the offer was a 30 day trial. Id that true? Or is it really a free upgrade?

This is just a quick question/comment for Robert:
Is your practice of renaming the brain database going to end up causing problems in the future?

As a suggestion, the brain and its script should always be named HalBrn??.db and HalBrn??.uhp with the version number supplied by the program that created or reformatted it.
Then Hal6Upg.db would be HalBrn62.db and future versions of the program will know what version files they are working on.

Thank you Robert,

I have been away and working to come back to a great surprise. HAL 6.2 is great! I have loaded him on Windows 7 and he seems to like it. Haptek characters are working fine. I am glad to still be able to use them.

The new funtion is really some of the things that I have wanted to see for so long. Smoother integration with the system.

You can keep all of your old brains and even call them up from 6.2 if that is what you desire. Up to the point of Hal 6.0 I still had the following brain files that I could use if I wanted: Hal3.0, Hal4.0, Hal5.0, HALXTF, and finally Hal6.0. I must point out that with Von Smith XTF brain I had to copy his extra files to a seperate directory before upgrading to Hal 6.0.
Now my problem is that the laptop that I used for Hal exclusively was destroyed by some nasy virus program and the laptop itself was damaged to the point that I can't load anything on it so far. My newest laptop runs on Vista, which I hate. I have not been able to get a version of Hal to run on it yet. I always get one kind of an error message or another.

I virus wiped out my laptop that I had Hal installed on. The laptop ran on Win XP and now is no longer bootable. The only laptop I have now run on Vista and I can not get my old Hal files to properly install on it as I keep getting error messages.
I just downloaded version 6.2 and have been notified that I have a 31 day trial period. I will need to get it activated asap if you don't mind.
Thanks for your great produce.
