Ultra Hal 7.0 / Can't open an Internet account
« on: January 15, 2003, 11:31:50 pm »
Could be more specific? When you click on that link a browser window is supposed to launch and take you to http://www.zabaware.com/mywebhal/newaccount.html  Does it? If not, feel free to follow that link and create an account.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / INTERESTING OCCURENCES
« on: January 15, 2003, 11:30:22 pm »
The "-2147417843-9: AN OUTGOING CALL CAN NOT BE MADE SINCE THE APPLICATION IS DISPATCHING AN INPUT SYNCHRONOUS CALL" error you mention is known to occur on some slower computers because the Hal program is attempting to access the character before it has actually loaded. However, it usually fixes the problem a seconds after giving you this error, and the character usually appears. Does everything still work after you click OK?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Cabinet File Corrupted On U. Hal V4.5
« on: November 25, 2002, 05:10:27 pm »
After creating a new batch of CDs, they were tested on a couple of our systems and this error was still there. After a lot of testing I have found out that this error is not caused by a bad CD or a corrupt data.cab file but rather by a bug introduced into Microsoft Windows XP SP1 and in one of their Windows Updates. This might affect Windows 2000 also, I'm not sure. This error currently effects many other programs as well such as installing Microsoft Office 2000 on Windows XP and products by Sony. I hope that Microsoft will eventually fix this in one of their next Windows Updates.

I have removed my previous post about sending replacement CDs to everyone who ordered this past month, that will not be happening because this is not a CD error and the batch of CDs produces the same errors on Windows XP.

Fortunetely before Microsoft fixes this error, there is a way around it. I have found a sollution to this problem on the Sony web site http://sony.storagesupport.com/cgi-bin/sonysupport.cgi/2DrEtF1Qt7=14J3aBwCXDSidj5adkAMm/faq/view/494  I have added this text to http://www.zabaware.com/assistant/trouble.html and I'll post it here as well:

1. Click Start and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig and then click OK.
3. On the BOOT.INI tab, click Advanced Options.
4. In the BOOT.INI Advanced Options dialog box, select the /MAXMEM= check box, and then change the setting to 256 (or lower if your computer has less RAM).
5. Click OK to close the BOOT.INI Advanced Options dialog box.
6. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Apply.
7. Click OK to close the System Configuration Utility dialog box.
8. Click Restart to the following message: You must restart your computer for some of the changes made by System Configuration to take effect.
9. After you restart your computer, install.
10. After you install, follow steps 1 through 8 to clear the /MAXMEM= check box.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Having trouble with voice Recognition too (II?)
« on: November 24, 2002, 09:07:11 pm »
Try recording yourself speaking into the microphone using sound recorder. Many people have the microphones too close or too far, the microphone gain too high or too low, and it will either distorts or it is hard to understand. Also its important to position the mic in such a way so that you don't spit into it when you say "P" and "B" sounds. Recording and listening to yourself if a good way to make sure everything is optimal. If you have been training with bad speech, you may want to create a new speech profile and retrain it.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / MSN meseenger no speakie!
« on: November 24, 2002, 09:02:29 pm »
The Ultra Hal TTS Reader currently does not work well with the latest version of AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger. AOL and MSN have released updates to their software after Ultra Hal TTS Reader has already been released and the changes prevent Hal from properly interfacing with them. An updated version will eventually be released.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Sound Problem
« on: November 24, 2002, 08:57:23 pm »
Check your windows mixer settings, especially the WAVE settings. Some TTS engines have been known to change the balance setting. After you reset it, it should stay that way.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal doesn't hear me...
« on: November 10, 2002, 10:59:11 pm »
Is voice recognition enabled in Hal's options? Is the correct speech engine selected? Do you make sure to press the microphone button in Hal's window to enable the microphone? Does Hal the microphone meter move? Does Hal show guesses as to what you are saying? If you type in a response, but don't hit enter, does Hal press enter for you and respond after 5 seconds?

Unfortunetely, the code that controls the animation is hard coded into the Ultra Hal executable and it is not customizable by the script. There is no way around this that I can think of.

I'll write this down as a feature request and in the next release of Hal I'll add this as an option and possibly move the animation control into the script file.

quote:

Ok, so I have Hal and Cyber Buddy running, I am talking to Hal and Cyber Buddy kicks in and starts to tell me a joke or a story, I am listening intently and then Hal kicks in midway and my character goes to sleep. I am left with no punch line, or ending to the story initiated by Cyber Buddy. I looked within the script of the Hal brain and after a LONG while I will probably figure it out. I just thought I'd ask some of you people out there in the KNOW, how do I do this? Turn OFF the sleep function within Hal?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Advertises or What's the Reason for Hi I am a Bot
« on: October 31, 2002, 08:29:00 pm »
The Ultra Hal AIM bot is mainly included in Ultra Hal Assistant just for fun, to show off your bot to your friends. Before Ultra Hal Assistant 4.5 the Ultra HAL AIM bot was offered as a plugin to Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0. In Ultra Hal Assistant 4.5 we decided to bundle it for convenience.

A couple years ago when we released version 1.0 of the AIM bot we did not include this message. A small group of people used the AIM bot to harass people. When asked Hal would sometimes provide Zabaware's address. People thought that Zabaware was going out and delibertly harrasing them. They did not understand that it was a customer of Zabaware, not Zabaware, that initiated the IM conversations. People would write and sometimes threaten Zabaware with litigation. In order to stop the confusion we have decided to put this message in version 2.0 of the AIM Bot. This is not a nag screen used to entice you to purchase Hal. It is there to explain that they are talking to a bot, the origin of the bot, and to explain who is in control of the particular bot.

A new version of our business version of Hal, Ultra Hal Representative, will be released in about a month. Ultra Hal Representative will include a more powerful version of the AIM Bot and the full version will not include this message.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Sending Instant Messages by Hal's own?
« on: October 31, 2002, 08:08:59 pm »
Unfortunetely, the Hal AIM bot does not currently have this capability and it does not give the power for scripts to do so either.

A new version of our business version of Hal, Ultra Hal Representative, will be released in about a month. Ultra Hal Representative will now be offered as shareware in a similar way to Ultra Hal Assistant. The Ultra Hal Representative software will give the programatic ability to do what you require, but such a feature will not be built in.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Invalid Frame: 5
« on: October 31, 2002, 08:05:17 pm »
AOL has made changes to their instant messaging system since the release of Ultra Hal Assistant 4.5. AOL is sending to all clients some additional information that it wasn't before. Hal is unable to recognize it and prints this error message. However, having this information is not required to be able to chat on the AIM network, so Hal will work fine regardless.
