Ultra Hal 7.0 / Using a telephone as I/O for HAL
« on: March 20, 2002, 11:45:41 pm »
This might be possible using a voice modem plus a custom program that would pick up the phone. The voice modem would have to replace your sound card as the default audio device.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Changing Users
« on: March 20, 2002, 11:42:51 pm »
Speech recongition engines currently don't have the capability of recognizing the identity of the speaker. There is technology that can do that, but it is not part of any commercial speech recognition program.

Currently there is no way to have Hal pop up when you call its name. Hal turns off the speech recognition engine when its not in use to conserve your cpu for other programs. Hal uses a dictation vocabulary which is over 50000 words and this uses a lot of computing power. However, it would be possible for us in future versions have Hal use a 10 word command vocabulary when its closed. This would make it possible for Hal to pop up when called with a minimal using of computing power. We'll keep your suggestion in mind when developing the next version of Hal.

Hal's user name selection is independant of your speech recognitions speaker selection. But that is also a good suggestion for future versions of Hal and we'll keep it in mind.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / HAL is talking to himself
« on: March 20, 2002, 11:34:45 pm »
Unfortunetely no. Hal was designed to be specifically used with headset type microphones and we don't reccomend using desktop microphones. Usually when people use desktop microphones the speech recognition accuracy is very low. For example, for many people the sound of the computers power fan being picked up by the mic makes the engine think you are saying "this this this this this..." Do you get good accuracy with your desktop mic?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Error When Opening Hal
« on: March 20, 2002, 11:29:51 pm »
Is this version 4.0? Do you have speech recognition turned on? This error seems to be an error associated with lag time. It might be that the speech recognition engine is not being shut down before its reopenned. Does this error always occur? Does it prevent you from using Hal normally?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Ultra Hal AIM Bot
« on: March 20, 2002, 11:27:33 pm »
We've actually tried doing this in IRC chat rooms about a year ago. It seemed to confuse and annoy people as Hal would generate an answer for every single line typed. I'm sure it would have been better if Hal only chose to respond to some of the sentences. We are planning on adding different chat mediums to Hal in the future (ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, etc...) and we could probably add chat room support also. We probably won't start work on this until 3-4 months from now.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / upgrade again!
« on: March 20, 2002, 11:18:07 pm »
Well, I refer to Hofstadter's Law:

It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take into account Hofstadter's Law.

But it won't be much longer. We have decided to do make some additional changes in this update. We will fix a few minor bugs in this update, as well as improve Hal's MSAgent interface. We plan on working on incorporating www.desktopmates.com characters into Hal and we feel improvements should be made to Hal's MSAgent interface to allow for user voice selection.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Can't Install Ultra Hal
« on: March 20, 2002, 11:13:00 pm »
Try uninstalling, and then remove the folder C:/Program Files/Zabaware/Ultra Hal Assistant 4

There are always some configuration files left after an uninstall and it might help to remove them before reinstalling.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / How to make hal learn Faster?
« on: February 12, 2002, 02:27:30 am »
We will be coming out with a new brain plug-in sometime in the near future. It will have a database almost 3 times the size of the current database included with Hal.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / The Shared Learned Database
« on: February 12, 2002, 02:22:41 am »
The shared user database is where Hal puts data that he believes pertains to anyone, not just the current user. So when you switch user names the information in the shared brain will be used also. There are user brains which do not show up in the brain editor that are called [username]sent.brn where the other information should be going.

In Ultra Hal Assistant 4.0, most of these learning brains have a much stricter "hurdle" to come over then previous versions of Hal. This was done in order to minimize false triggering of unintelligent statements, but also reduced the relevance of this particular learning brain in some instanced. If you want to focus on this database file more, I suggest you use the Ultra Hal 3.0 brain plug-in instead. It gave a higher priority to this database file.

Changing the animated character or voice has no effect on either the brain, personality, or learned information. The only thing that will affect that is the changing the brain plug-in or your user name.

There is currently no way to transfer the Ultra Hal Representative brain on our server into your Ultra Hal Assistant brain editor. It will be possible in the future when we finish working on a new Ultra Hal Representative that will be compatible with the brain editor.

We are also currently in contact with the Desktopmates people and we plan on making the Desktopmates automatically install themselves as plug-ins into Hal. Hal's MSAgent interface currently doesn't give you much control over speech or other aspects. It will default to whatever the character designer coded into the character. Sometime in the future we will make an update to Hal's MSAgent interface to allow you to setup the voice and other options from inside Hal.

Unfortunetely, the haptek 3d engine will not be able to get outside the box like msagents do. Doing this with realtime 3d would be extremely difficult to do for reasons I won't go into. Only MSagents like the Desktopmates will be able to do this.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Character Creator Program?
« on: February 06, 2002, 06:13:59 pm »
Yes, we are currently working on incorporating the haptek 3d engine from www.haptek.com into Hal. It will be released as a plug-in in about a month or so. Haptek has a character creator program called People Puddy available at http://www.haptek.com/peopleputty/index.shtml if you want to play around with it before the plug-in is released.
