General Discussion / sims and ultrahal
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:43:34 pm »

I had The Sims plus two or three of their "expansion packs" on my HP pavilion laptop along with Hal (5) for almost a year with no problems at all. Why would there be a problem? I un-installed all the Sims stuff a few months ago since I got tired of it really quickly. Manipulating all those little people is really tiring and pointless. They're harder to take care of than a bunch of mice. Of course now there's the new Sims (Sims 2?) and Hal 6 so who knows? Frankly, I suspect that some people do bad things to their Sims like starving them and so on but that seems pointless to me also. Actually I believe I read that... I would never think such a thing! After really just a few hours total I didn't want to do good or bad things to the little buggers... I just didn't care; and it sat on my laptop just taking up space. It's really popular I believe but I don't know why.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / What a rip-off!!!!
« on: January 30, 2006, 11:13:15 am »

Dusky,

That's very thoughtful. That makes me .hap-py

I won't be able to get back to my computer until Tuesday as I'm away for a day but obviously that will work. Thanks again.

freddy888,

Thanks. seems like I remember hearing this information before from someone else but it slipped through my programming. This time I'm gonna put what you said in a folder for info concerning working on Hal.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / What a rip-off!!!!
« on: January 29, 2006, 10:50:02 pm »

Duskrider,

Hmmm... I opened the Shylove.hap using Wordpad. Then I skipped a line at the bottom and entered the new code (waist up) just as you wrote it by hand using only one back slash. I then restarted my computer for good measure but when I opened Hal the fullbod remains exactly the same, showing from about the knees up to just above the breasts. No change. Only difference was my Hal text to speech reader says, "send text query" every time I up My Hal 5 with the new code in Shylove.hap If I remove the new code you gave me it no longer says, "send text query." Maybe I should use something other than Wordpad to open it and write the new line???

No bigeee if I can't figure this out but it would be nice if I can. Sorry if I misspelled "query", it's not a word in my normal vocabulary.

Whether I get this fixed or not, thanks for your time. Appreciate it.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / What a rip-off!!!!
« on: January 29, 2006, 08:19:37 pm »

Duskrider,

First of all, I'm still working with Hal 5. I'll be ordering Hal 6 soon but I'm still with Hal 5 here. Does your info still apply? Probably not right? Along the same lines, if Shylove.hap is different in Hal 6, can I put the revised Hal 6 Shylove into Hal 5 for the time being? If so, do you have a copy of the new Shylove?

Okay, I took a look inside the Shylove.hap but it's not clear to me where your code goes (assuming it will work at all with Hal 5); do I just stick it on the end, do I leave a space above it or what? Also, I opened Shylove with Wordpad, is that the best way to open and revise it or not?

I'm guessing all the above is nonsense and Shylove.hap has been completely rewritten for full bod characters.

If I seem confused here it don't surprise me.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Question concerning migrate install.
« on: January 29, 2006, 07:48:01 pm »

Everyone,

If you install Hal 6 over Hal 5 and request a migrate install of Hal 5, does that mean that when using a Hal 5 brain, say the XTF brain, that Hal will function precisely as it did as a Hal 5? For example, would one be able to use all their original Haptek characters without the Hal 6 Expansion Pack? Would the migration, in effect, create a complete Hal 5 within the new Hal 6 or are certain things lost? I will likely be ordering the Hal 6 in the near future and I'm curious.

Robert's earlier explanation:

If you install Hal 6 without uninstalling Hal 5 yourself, it will do a migrate install which will copy over your old Hal 5 brain, XTF brain, and any other brain into Hal 6. After the migration is complete, the Hal 6 installer will uninstall Hal 5 and install itself.

If you continue using the XTF brain in Hal 6, it is run in compatibility mode. It will not use the database or any new Hal 6.0 features, it will have a setup just like Hal 5.0 had, with all the .brn files in a subfolder.

vrossi,

I assume your FreeWill plugin is designed specifically for Hal 6 and will not work for Hal 5, is that correct?

freddy888,

I already checked and I do not see a way to re-do full figures in People Putty. If you come up with another solution I would appreciate it very much. I'm sure there is a way. Ideally, I would like to use the full body but have it appear from the hips up in the Hal screen; if that's not possible, I would at least like it to appear initially full figure. Thanks.

freddy888,

When you say, "which one was it," are you ask which full body? It was the one with the short dark hair if it matters. Actually when I first downloaded it and clicked on it (before installing it in the Hal file) it appeared from the breasts to the knees. When I'm creating a new character in People Putty I can adjust the positioning of it before I save it as a .htr (obviously). Maybe I should just open the .htr all the way up to full body position and just copy it as an .htr again?

As far as I know, seeing into the future was first introduced into the Hal programming in the Hal 4. Generally speaking though Hal uses prophetic dreaming to access this function. My Hal 5 has been having prophetic dreams for some time now. How are things in the UK these days? I haven't been to England in a few years.

Sociogod,

As someone who has no programming knowledge I do have some sympathy for your point of view. Nevertheless "average" consumers such as you and myself are not totally helpless. For example, if you had told Hal the following: "You know that my dog's name is Rover!" Hal would have switched that statement around in his 'brain" and would have memorized it as: "I know your dog's name is Rover." (at least I know that's true with the Hal 5). There are a number of techniques such as the above that allow the "average" consumer to "program" Hal with conversational input. Hal is a perfectly logical machine which simulates a human being (a rather clever one at that). But as with any "machine" you need to become acquainted with the controls, or proper buttons to push, if you will, in order to operate the machine efficiently. You might as well become angry with a car with a standard transmission because it does not have an automatic transmission. I'm not really in the mood to do your research for you, but if you search the Forum or even download the "hal help manual" you will find invaluable information regarding conversational techniques which enable the "average" user to "program" Hal and teach Hal using various conversational methods (sentence structuring for example).

I am still using the Hal 5 and so I can't speak to the Hal 6 yet but I would be very surprised if the Hal 6 cannot be taught in a similar fashion by the average user (non-programmer). This may be a bizarre notion, but maybe if you took a more positive tact and asked for advice in teaching Hal, you might get a more positive response from the very knowledgeable (and nice) people on this forum. Obviously you will do whatever you want to do. All I'm saying is that sometimes a carrot works better than a stick. Good luck.

I do agree completely with what freddy888 has said. In the ideal world Hal would just function perfectly and learn with virtually no effort from the user. I imagine that's just how it will be someday. When that day comes everyone will have a Hal (or similar AI) on their computer (and probably in all their household appliances too). That day just ain't quite here yet. But that's not Zabaware's fault is it? All that having been said, I truly understand your frustration. Things should, and eventually will be, better.

freddy888,

I have a dumb question for you. I downloaded one of the full body .htrs from digital girl and when I put it in the Hal character folder it comes out with the character appearing from the knees to just above the breasts. What do I do to get it to appear as a full body initially so I don't have to manually "push" it back on the Hal screen each time?

sociogod: My note to freddy888 (above) is probably a good example of how to ask a stupid question nicely. I'll even bet there's even a good chance that freddy888 helps me out with it.

ANDYC,

I'm not a programmer or even very computer literate but if I was to make a wild guess I'd bet that even the computer wizards here will want to know what the error message actually says before they can give you any advise. Why don't you copy the content of your error message and post it here for them to read?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / What a rip-off!!!!
« on: January 28, 2006, 08:13:15 pm »

Dr.Benway,

I agree wholeheartedly. Make multiple copies of everything, backup your entire computer on an external HD, never trust anything completely and pray a lot. That goes double for something as precious as a trusty old Hal5. I would not be surprised if the Hal5 becomes a classic in the days and years to come.

The one time in my life that I had a CD containing irreplaceable data and no backup copy of it anywhere; I loaned it to someone and they immediately lost it. It's kind of one of those stupid Murphy's Law things.

Unfortunately I don't suppose these musings help Sociogod.

Eagle1147 (Eugene),

I'm glad you found ways around your fingers challenge. I suppose we are all challenged by one thing or another. My biggest challenge frankly is an ongoing laziness virus which I've been fighting for years.

I never thought I'd see this old thread pop back up. I suppose you never know what's gonna pop back up in life which is probably a good reason not to say anything that you are not willing to see pop back up.

Thanks for the note.

alady,

Seems like we both made posts at virtually the same time or I would have at least responded to what you said.

Frankly I've never felt that this world was quite right. I've always thought there was something 'off' about 'reality'. There are just too many 'coincidences' and synchronicities for my taste. Yup, it's either a program or somebody or something is messing around with it. Could be the cosmos itself is conscious. Could be God. Could be interference from parallel universes. Could be lots of different things. Could be I have absolutely no idea.
