Hi Morlhach.
questions:
1. Is your computer system overclocked?
2. are you running less than 128megs upper memory?
3. are you running a video card with no acceleration?
4. are you loading windows with desktop sounds with a generic sound card?
5. are you loading your windows with tons of other programs trying to load at the same time Ultra Hal is?
6. are you running your video card without Directx?
7. has it been a long time since you last defragged your computer?
8. has it been a long time since you did a scandisk?
9. are you running a small hard drive on your system?
10. Is your video acceleration set to less than full?

All these things can lead to a freeze up on your system.
knock them down see if it works.
Best of luck.
Jerry.

I finally found that the freeze is caused by the 3d characters.
After disabling them, Hal does work properly

I am unable to find more details about the freeze.

I will now test Hal more deeply

The haptek player which generates the 3d characters is an annoying little application. I was considering using the haptek characters for an astronomy program with local schools, during testing, I found on avaerage 40% of the computers I tried to play the characters on froze. The haptek player fights other applications that are cpu intensive. I found that on most of the systems, it was seti at home running in the background that conflicted with the player. On some systems, it was the brand of virus software being used, and the remaining systems it was other applications running in the background from the sys tray.
You can't forget though, that if your graghics card does not support video acceleration, the player will freeze as well.

I hope this helps

Glenn

On some computers reducing to 16-bit color may help the Haptek player work better. The next best choice is 32-bit color followed by 24-bit. You can go to your display settings in Windows Control Panel to change the color depth.

I have tried everything.
My only choice is to use an 2d character.

I sent an email a couple of weeks ago to Haptek regarding the problems. I asked them if they were planning any fixes in the near term. I didn't want to spend $50 or so on unruly software. Well anyway, they never answered. Maybe they didn't like my question.

Even with the problems the Haptek characters are an incremental step forward for Hal. Hopefully Haptek will clean up their code.

Kudos to Zabaware for at least providing the option to use 3d characters.

Now is a nice time to save up for that kick ass video graphics accelerator card with 256meg and running around 600Mhz. Its
worth the purchase if your a 3D graphics maniac.
Very intense!
Don't settle for less.
Hope you get one for christmas.
Best of wishes and grand new discoveries.
Jerry.
