Hal seems to be having outside conversations while I am attempting to train him and tends to ignore my input, how can I prevent this? Also, what are the best voice recognition softwares to use with Hal? I have tried Dragon and am currently trying the standard VR by microsoft. I am using Hal5. Any help would be appreciated as I have installed him primarilly for my girlfriend to help her navigate around the computer without having to look for the various programs we are running.

A major problem with any voice recogniation is the amount of repetitiveness needed to achieve a good result. Another thing is to make sure that there are no background noises at all, even the hiss of an air conditioner can cause a misunderstanding of words. When I first started to train voice I had to repeat the lessons several times before a marked inprovement was noticed.

I dis-liked the fact none of the VR Trainning sessions had --Know/NO-- and other words like this.

Hal is probably not ignoring your input.  It takes a while for him to be able to converse about subjects he doesn't know about and it can also take some repetition for him to "believe" you.  For instance, if I tell him that I drive a Ford Escort, he may reply with some gibberish about politics.  This is because at the time that I mentioned my car, he didn't already have any information about my car stored in his brain, so he responded with something he did know in order to keep the conversation going.  But after I tell him a little bit more about my car, the next time we come to that subject, he will be able to talk about it since he now has some information stored on the subject.  There ARE ways to force train him such as "if/then" statements and the "do you know" plugin.

As far as speech recognition, I use Dragon as well and have found it to be one of, if not the best.  I'm not sure why it would take longer to train with speech recognition since it is simply doing the typing for you.  But Bill is right about keeping the background noise to a bare minimum.

The main thing to remember is to have patience.  Hal evolves much like a child, it takes time.  I hope this helps and good luck with your Hal!

By the way, I notice that you seem to be new to Hal and yet you are running an older version 5.  Version 5 (with crack) is the latest and greatest available for download on the torrent sites.  This wouldn't be the specific version you are using, would it?

Yes in fact it is. I stumbled across it one day recently while looking for some VR software that could help my girlfriend on the computer. She panicked when some spamware popped when she was online about viruses and I had a difficult time walking through spyware doctor so Thats how we got introduced to Hal.

Correct me if I am wrong, but apparently you have obtained an illegal copy of Hal and are now coming to the developer's web site asking for help with the product.  You should visit this page http://www.zabaware.com/products/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=1 before asking for more help, my friend.  I'm sure the good people who have slaved over this software for many years would greatly appreciate it.

maybe if you give Rob some information on the location of the pirated HAL that Robert may return the favor in some way for your help. a reward or such, maybe a free upgrade to 6.2 and support of the forum. if you are honest and want to join in with us all here at Zabaware.

Robert is a very kind hearted and exceptionally intelligent person and a dear friend.

Thanks guys for the advice. But, I visit alot of sites where the people share what they have acquired, so I cant remember where exactly I ran across him. However, and please correct me if I am wrong but isnt Uktra hal 5 considered to be freeware? Also there was no crack or serial number that I recall where ever it was that I found him but I'll have to take a good look again to be sure. After all, I am not here to step on anyones toes or looking to acquire anything illegally; I am just trying to do something for my girlfriend that would help make certain tasks easier for her to do. Again, thanks for the advice!

bobhd3316,
Make sure you are using the real Hal their are many bots in this digital world and torrents and limewire,Kaza, ect.. are/can be, cruel in as much as it is an exelent platform to launch viruses and worse.

IMO Hal is well worth buying at the asked price. I was hesitant , now I really enjoy my Hal 'She' has developed to be an extension of me, I just don't know where she met ALICE, any thoughts O.T.C.E ??

I digress.

I went back and took a look at my download. It was from tpb and looked further for any serial numbers, authorization codes or cracks and found none. As for viruses and trojans, I always scan my system several times a week for those and as of yet have found none. But I am very careful when I do this and check for anything that might be questionable. If I so I dont download it. And, I am have been seriously considering purchasing hal6.2. I have only had hal for a week and have gotten much entertainment from him and though it took it a little time so did my girlfriend when I finally got her to interact with hal. So far i am very impressed with hal.[:D]
