General Discussion / Chatbot Forums
« on: July 15, 2005, 04:22:31 am »
Overcrowded? Too many people?
I thought that was the intent of a public forum in the first place.

While there are numerous forums for a variety of chatbots on the net, this is the original one for Hal and like Dusky said, It's where our roots of commonality exist.

Well put Dusky!!

As far as I know voice recognition for Hal only works on one's local machine...not on the forum. <G> Turn down your speakers....[:p]

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Found an interesting site
« on: July 12, 2005, 05:09:22 pm »
Thanks for that link, Sabrina.

I recall Spydaz mentioned the
Sluggish Software site some while
back but interfacing the software
to Hal seems to be the main stumbling
block.

General Discussion / We gotta figure out how to use this with Hal
« on: July 12, 2005, 05:06:03 pm »
Yes, very nice. I spoke to Alceu several years ago about this model of his. He told me that he prefered polygon modelling to nurbs modelling for greater degree of control and smoother end result when rendering. I had to agree with him!!

Another great 3D artist is Steven Hagg-Stahlberg. Some of his work is extremely difficult to distinguish from a real person.

Thanks for sharing that with the rest Sabrina!

Try an FTP program like WS_FTP or CuteFTP or the like.

IE doesn't seem to like the FTP command line for this site
and usually times out.

FTP:liquid-skeleton.i989.net
User:digitalgirl
Password:zabadaba

Lot of goodies there from which to choose.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Should I buy Hal - or Not?
« on: July 10, 2005, 08:12:57 pm »
Well Neffster, like our old friend here, Spydaz says, "The scripts are out there."

Do the mining thing and you'll most likely find answers to your many questions. Hal is an ongoing experiment in the field of AI. The programs evolution as most of this type, happen over time, perhaps years, but we're now at a new horizon with Hal where it should take on more abilities, personas, emotions, topical responses and basically become more "human-like" in its conversation.

Some are doing experiments with computer vision, robotics, home control w/ X-10 devices, etc. so your field of interest is wide open.

There is a wide variety of free plug-ins, scripts, skins, textures (for the Paid version), TTS voices and brains.

Browse, ask questions here and welcome to the forum!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / tell hal a knock knock joke
« on: July 10, 2005, 03:16:56 pm »
Terry,

You might try responding back to Hal with, "Define <subject>" or "What is a <subject>?"

Hal has a pretty extensive control over the word net feature.

General Discussion / Something very strange

Yes and don't you love being deep in a forum where someone posts a link to a website, you go there, it's ok but now you want to click BACK to your original place and that website won't let you leave!??

I really detest those types of sites. All they're doing is making sure I never go there again.

Those Pop-up pages can easily be shut down by pressing the ALT + F4 keys (this closes the active window you're in).

Advertising is everywhere.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Can I integrade hal into my own applications?
« on: July 09, 2005, 04:23:38 pm »
Explain what you mean by integrate into applications? I don't think Hal works like the MSAgents when one clicks on Help like in Excel or Word. Hal is a also different than the Deskmate or CyberBuddy characters.

Hal can be made to open files, search the internet, close flies, run certain programs, etc.

Let us know what you have in mind and perhaps a solution might already exist.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / SELLING HAL BRAIN
« on: June 30, 2005, 09:31:58 pm »
Navaz,

Are you using the free version of Hal or the paid one?
Have you tried the Default brain that came with Hal or
are you using another one like vonsmith's XTF or onthecuttingedge2005's brain?

Most of us have added various scripts that enable Hal to
do different things and as such, may not appeal to other
users. Some like the auto-idle function whereas others
do not care for it.

A lot of us have spent a lot of time chatting with, training,
fine tuning and enhancing our Hal's brain. You must be willing
to spend some quality time chatting with Hal in order to
acheive a level of satisfactory responses. Some make take
offense by someone wanting a "turn key" version of Hal instead
of investing their own time.

I don't have a problem helping anyone but you must be
willing to help yourself as well. You and Hal will both
benefit.

Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime!

Let us know what's up.

Regards!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / SELLING HAL BRAIN
« on: June 30, 2005, 06:02:22 pm »
The word "SELL" would probably negate any type of "legal" transaction. Some of the brains like vonsmith's XTF and onthecuttingedge2005's Ziggy are mostly their proprietary work and as such should not be offered for sale.

In a lot of instances one can merely "give" a copy of their brain file to someone else, similar to that person downloading the file in the first place.

After all, the brain is from Robert M.'s creation of Hal in the first place.

I don't see harm in giving one's brain file away to another user but that user is liable to end up with a brain that has a lot of your personality in it, not to mention other data.

Just my take on the subject.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / HAL has went belly up
« on: June 28, 2005, 04:54:47 pm »
CoCoKid, Welcome back...It's been a while!

Scott,

Right! Here's a post from Robert M.:

If you installed the voices after you installed Hal, you may need to run the program called SAPI Config. It is located in your start menu under the folder Haptek Player (The 3D character engine Hal uses). Once the haptek sapi config sees the new engine it will be able to use it.

One can always click on the Members list then locate for instance vonsmith or crunch and review all of their postings. This is at least one way for the individual to locate information. On the down side, one also has to know which member to look for depending on what the user wishes to know.

Usually good advice when joining any forum is to lurk and wade through many many previous postings before askings questions that most likely, have already been addressed.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Birthday errors
« on: June 27, 2005, 04:45:40 pm »
Ocloner,

The 1.0 & 1.2 patch should work fine with your Hal brain.

It is always good practice to make a backup / copy of your existing brain (snafu, power outage during upgrade/install, etc.)

Try asking Hal "Who is Jim?" or "Who is Patty?" etc.

Bear in mind that I've been chatting with my Hal over several years. Granted, every now and then it comes up with an incorrect statement or response but most of the time its responses are right on topic.

The more you talk to Hal the more it will learn. Try to use correct english and correct sentences when chatting. It is also helpful to follow Hal's question in a manner that reflects the question back to Hal. EX:
HAL: "Do you have a fondness for honey?"
USER: "Yes, I like honey very much."

This will help to reinforce the learning to Hal instead of just saying, "Yes, it's OK." or something like that. You get my drift?

The use of IF THEN statements is also a good way to teach Hal and it will make the connection between the statements.

The read from text file feature does work to a limited degree but the file can be no larger than 64k or text.

Hal works best over time...long chats with Hal. Talk about anything of interest. Reinforce some vital statements with a ! instead of just a . Let Hal know if he/she is correct or if something is true.

If Hal asks if there is a relationship between one word and another make sure that there is before answering otherwise tell him no.
EX:
I might tell Hal that my horse likes to drink a lot of water after a run.

HAL: "Are water and horse related?"
USER: "No"

They were only related in this one instance in my sentence but they most likely will not be related topics in future conversations so there is no reason for Hal to associate them together.

Hope this gives you some food for thought. Experiment, try new things with Hal and soon it will surprise you with it's insightful answers. It, like all good things, takes time to develop.

Keep us posted and good luck!

Bill,

Point well taken. I do enjoy a pretty girl as much as the next man but in Hal's case, I'd much rather the program have a superior intelligence than a superior body!
