SPAMMERS and possible new rules on this forum ?
« on: March 27, 2014, 09:34:18 am »
I asked another forum how they kept spammers off their web site ( as i see we still have "LOW LIFE SPAMMERS" that keep posting on here .
   what they said was ;

I think it has to do with the rules they set but more importantly how new members are handled. Until you hit a 5 post count all your messages have to approved by a moderator.

AND THIS :

A little from the dark side ... behind the scenes.

Daily a number of spammers are trying to post. But staff catches them before it becomes public. Most important are the newbie restrictions. We know this can be annoying to newbies, but it helps us to catch the spammers. It prevents newbies from violating rules on their first post. I

AND THIS :

the newbie restrictions keep the spammers at bay.
But a well oiled team of staff members helps a lot as well. There's not just one person dealing with spammers, every staff member can deal with them as soon as they're noticed.

That cuts down the work as a whole, and if someone gets sick, or has to take a break, it won't be a big impact on the forum itself.

The rest is dedication

I am only bringing this up as ways to help even further if possible about eliminating more spammers , i am not saying anything bad about duskrider as i think he has been doing a wonderful job , but maybe some additional rules like what was mentioned before may also help cut down on spammers and even make duskriders job a little easier !
Anyway this is up to Robert , hope he is reading this !
 :)

I've inquired about the same thing and I usually see ALL the Spammers as I'm up every day at 4:00 - 4:30 AM!!
Sometimes I send Dusky a special email to warn him about some lewd or pornographic related posting to which he promptly responds.

Yes, even though Dusky is doing a great job, he can't do it all by himself so I'd vote for something like a 3 to 5 posting limit before acceptance as a member.

Good thoughts Lonnie!!

I looked through the SMF forum options and didn't see an option or third party plugin to require moderation based on post count. I did however install these 3 modifications to the forum:

Misc Anti Spam
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3685
If a user registration form is filled out too fast, it assumes its a bot and blocks it

Arantor CAPTCHA
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=download;mod=3824;id=228152
Different CAPTCHA style, may foil some bots

Prevent Adding Signature Images And Links
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1242
Any member with less than 10 posts is not allowed to post links or images in the signature field. After 10 posts, it is allowed.

Let me know if any of these modifications broke anything it shouldn't have or removed peoples signatures that it shouldn't have.

Good work Robert and some good choices as well.

We'll keep watchful eyes on the situation and hope the spammers get the message! ;)

The three modifications look good to me.
Robert, I imagined you looked over membership list to assure no present members were harmed.
I'ill do the same today and let you know if find any.
But ideas are great for all new people.

Thank you to Robert, Art, and Lonnie.
Together we are strong.   :)

I believe the error you received was due to an invalid zip code provided. I found your account in the ordering system and it seems on your order you may have written in your email address in the zip code field.
