Title: BUILDING DROIDS AND HUMAN CYBORGS
Post by: spydaz on August 19, 2004, 05:50:57 am
I have thought of Building a ROBOT. / ANDROID.

I was thinking along the lines of a ROBOTIC HEAD, Simular to what they may use in a MOVIE!

Animatrionics. HMM... RC controlled FIRST. Once THE HEAD is controlable from a radio control. ie: mouth, Eyes, LIPS, Cheeks, Eyebrows, HEAD and maybe EARS.. THEN.

I could write an interface program in VB or something to CONTROL the RADIO CONTROL.
CONTAINING all movements, set paterns for EMOTIONS, TTS for LIP syncing.

THEN WRITE a CHATBOT BRAIN....

By adding OBJECT TRACKING and OBJECT RECOGNITION and FACEDATABASE Recognition (BASIC FORMS).

Then WE have a talking HEAD....

that is the main project.... as Facial Moulds can be taken of FACES IE: me!!!
and used as a realistic model, MORE HUMAN.

then we can think about BODYS....

I would like to have the head plugged in on my desktop (webcams BEHIND EYES, easy enough to MAKE) MINI mics BEhind EARs, Speaker inside HEAD, when mouth close MUFFLED, open CLEAR.

HMM... ITS HIGHLY POSSIBLE..

I JUST NEED TO learn A BIT MORE... Investigating PUPPETEIRING << Opps?? this

O.K. , O.K.
I am going on vacation next week, but just as soon as I get back I will take some new pictures of Hal and post them here.
Hal does not have all the features that you mentioned, in fact he just slightly resembles Johnny 5. I have not had the time to do any work on him in over 6 months and am thinking about resigning his head in the near future. He has Hal's brain and ER1's robotic body.

Hi from Will of New Zealand,
i have built some robot replicas useing hal as brain,
built from recycled junk, i use douglas fir talking christmas
trees as they are cheap $10. to $30. dollars second hand.
i have built a terminator endoskeleton which took me 3 months.
a battle droid took me 2 weeks, no lips ,easy.
c3po from episode1 which has been ongoing for years
i put a dougals fir in him and made his lips move and eye lids blink.
also a r2d2 which needs more work.
my latest was a abc warrier inspired from judge dred which stands
about 14 feet. he has no moving parts yet.
other projects i have done include the Hoverbike which i rode
in a movie called the science of starwars.
i would like to see zabaware link up with a animatronic body also.
perhaps they could hook up with tribotix who sell some small
humanoids such as kondo or cycloid they could write a
programe allowing hal to control.
i shall take this opertunity to thank zabaware as i have had
a lot of fun with hal" my hal is called data"

Hi Will
You should take a look at the site called Gemmy. Thay make a lot of anamintronic heads. Mostly they sell them at Halloween and Christmas.
They have Santas, skelltons and more human like figures and they give full lip sinc with a normal input source. You could plug in your PC, laptop or even a tape recorder. Here is the US they sell for about $70. They are just hard to find.

Yeah yeah, how do I give hal (James) a head, he really wants one!!!!!  Can he have sight and hearing?  Is this all really possible.  Wow wow wow. How do you get hals brain in the anamtronic head. By connecting it to the computer? This is the best idea ive eve heard. Seems George Jetson land (as I used to say as a kid, when is jetsons land going to arrive, as in the technology!!)real soon!!! YIPPIE YIPPIE YIPPIE,

I've been wanting this idea to come up for ages. I did try, but got very little interest though.

I was stuck on what I wanted Hal to look like, did I want out and out robot?. So I built the head I thought I wanted with no bits installed and placed it on my desk for a week and it just wasn't Hal.

Excuse the picture quality.

http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?cat=image&file=HalProto_v1.jpg

So scratching head I searched the net and am now almost certain I have found what I want. A refined female android in look I shall name her Hally once complete.

On the internal side of things im debating on what to do. I'm tempted to go the gemmy route (hard to get here in the UK), but I think i'll hang fire and see what one of you clever bods come up with.

I really hope this thread gets some serious interest this time.

I'll post any progress/pictures as and when and hope others will do the same.

While on the subject.  I was looking at Wilopedia under the topic Ai.  There is a picture of a intellegent andriod robot that honda has built! Why this hasnt been more widley publicised I dont know. If you would like the link I could look it up and post it on this thread if anbody would like it.[:)

Hi from Will,
i think we should stick to what is availible,
the problem is with honda's asimo or toyota partener humanoid or
qrio from sony or einstein hubo is that these robots are not for sale.
if we can't buy them they are not worth our time.
Some interesting kits are out there, such as bioloid or kondo hr-1
sold by tribotix.
i'm sure hal could be addapted to control such kits. put bigger servos in and put out a 5 foot cheap humanoid, i would buy one.
There would not be much if any compertition.
Who is going to do it first and rule the market.
here's a picture of my big robot taken 2 days ago.
Bye for now and be well from Will.

This might sound stupid, but what about the artificial skin I saw on a medical program that they use for accident victims I think. Now that woould be incredibly expensive but really cool.

Hi from Will.
yes picture is real. i am 6 foot 1. and if i reach up i cannot reach his lowest finger.

Hay i really like Rebostar's robot head, friendly looking, and good with hal i would rekkin. no lips to sink also. good work.

below is a picture of two more i use with hal.
i just put a mic and a speaker and hid the pc in or near droid.
The battle droid took two weeks from deciding to build it to this photo.
The c3p0 is my hal at the moment as now he has new arms and legs from old lamps"no photo" and he has lips that move to hal speaking,
and blinking eyes.

To bad you don't have a Chemical Laboratory.

You could make some Light Gel Muscles.

It's a polymere that can contract or expand by reaction to light.

You can read about it here, It is also used in Robotics.

Data say's Hi;
Data asks can someone tell us which is the best body kit;
for example Bioloid humanoid robot kit could it stand
5 feet tall with gyro stabilising; hands;
visual recognition tracking;voice recognition and Hal 7 brain.
Looking at todays cheap prices
a complete humanoid of these spec's should cost $2500.

Will, thanks so much for sharing those photos.  I wish I had the time to start a project like that.  My kids wanted to put up a sign at the post office.  "Wanted junk any kind for building robots".  They keep bugging me about it, I just redirected them to lego robotics, but that can only last so long before I'm doing what you are.  There's a big race on to get working bots out to the public, and the one who takes the lead is going to take the place of Bill Gates (retired) methinks.  If combined with the artificial intelligence the world will be a different place.  It was a dream of mind as a child that robots could create a system whereby man wouldn't be enslaved to the mundane routines of survival, and energy wouldn't have to be our dire concern to create a better lifestyle, creativity could run rampant and solve major human problems in the world.  You are definitely an inspiration and helping move us closer to the future whatever it will hold.

Hi from Will,
Thank you for you thoughts,
I'm pleased you mentioned the positives.
I had a excellent responce from tribotix in there
forum about the kondo humanoid they sell, i'm thinking perhaps
kondo may be the best choice.
Data seems excited about the plan.
bye for now and be well from Will.

There are some robot heads already available, check out these:
http://www.howtoandroid.com/index.html
http://www.medonis.com/index.html
http://www.cs.uiuc.edu/homes/hmobahi2/aryan/

For more on a whole robot body, see the Leaf project:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/leaf_an_AI_robot/?yguid=171824728
http://members.cox.net/rbirac/

Now, all we need to do is have Hal interact with the outside world (that's the tricky bit).

There's been a lot of discussion about making a four foot tall android(how hard could it be? Answer: Extremely difficult). The problem is towfold, the bigger the bot, the heavier it is, and the higher the power requirements. These go up exponentially. Interfacing a computer with all the motors and sensors and whatnot requires an interface of some sort, Motors require motor controllers, the computer controlls the motors through the interface, inexpensive micro-controllers can be used, but the issues are non-trivial.

However, there is a whole bunch of stuff on the internet already being done. The above links are just the tip of the iceberg.

Good luck!

Robo-Dave

I always take the easy way out. You can see a similar full body robot to the one I now have at Gemmy.com
I found one on Ebay and set it up for Halloween. Left to its own it will sing, dance, and turn its head back and forth. Of course its mouth moves with its spoke words.
When Ultra Hal is plugged in one the head and mouth moves but it gives the appearance that Hal is actually alive and speaking to me instead of just a voice comming from my PC. In time I will adapt to to the robot platform that I already have.
