I'm disappointed in you, Bill. I didn't mean to upset you, or launch a personal attack.

But you still didn't answer my question. Show me the money, Bill.

Such dripping sarcasm. I thought better of you.

Let's try this again: I said that I've seen no evidence that the "mind" exists outside the "brain." If you have evidence of this, show it to us!!! We'd love to know all about it. Sadly, saying it's not possible with:
A. our current understanding of the brain
and,
B. our current understanding of the laws governing the physics of silicon based computer chips;
Is not evidence that it MUST therefore exist outside the brain.

I'm not trying to convince you of anything, I'm asking for clarification here. If you have evidence to prove your point, let's have it. The scientific method provides for reproducibility, if your experiments prove something, I should be able to reproduce it under the same circumstances.
I'm not saying that you're wrong, I'm just saying that until evidence is presented, I am forced to conclude there is something else happening here. My conclusion is based on a lack of evidence, rather than speculation on what may or may not be true.
I can speculate that alien life forms exist in the universe, and that it is very likely. However, there is absolutely no physical evidence. none. So until a flying saucer lands on my front lawn, (or your front lawn,) I am forced to conclude by the EVIDENCE that flying saucers are a myth.

Ok, you're assuming a one to one correlation between brain and computer.

No, I'm not. I'm asserting that the brain, if it stores anything, must store it somehow, and I demonstrated that even using a higher density storage scheme than is likely, using a smaller data stream than is obvious, there is still not enough room.
quote:

If I seem to be sure, it's because I've seen nothing to support a different solution.

So if you personally don't have evidence for something it must not exist? Bishop Berkley was fun when I smoked pot but if a tree falls in the forest and kills you when no one is there to hear you scream, you are still dead.

I've seen nothing to support your solution (which is that there is nothing to solve), other than assertions that if you can't see something it must not exist.

If you don't know something it is unknown, not non-existant.
quote:
I don't remember everything I've seen, heard, touched, thought, experienced, et al ad naseum.

You don't recall it. Memory and recall are two different things. Just because you can't find your sock under the bed doesn't mean socks don't exist, you just can't find it. Your options include the following, empty the room and you will find the sock, ask someone else to help you look, get a different perspective, or, just pretend there are no socks.

Your goal seems to be to convince me that all there is in this world is what you already know. Have fun with that.

"But I don't know, I'm not as sure as you seem to be. Could be all sorts of things, but two things are sure, the numbers don't add up - and we won't find the answer by pretending they do."

Hoo boy. Ok, you're assuming a one to one correlation between brain and computer. My brain is not a computer, my computer is not a brain. You say the numbers don't add up, what numbers? Apples plus Oranges equals what? A fruit smoothie? What does this have to do with anything?
If I seem to be sure, it's because I've seen nothing to support a different solution. I don't remember everything I've seen, heard, touched, thought, experienced, et al ad naseum. I remember that I had cereal for breakfast yesterday, because I have cereal for breakfast every day, except weekends, when I may have waffles or eggs, or both. Perhaps the brain only remembers patterns, and only ones that deviate from the norm; until we really understand how it works, this is all idle speculation. Gibabytes of pixels equates to what in the human brain? The brain doesn't see pixels, for one thing. The brain may be analog, it's probably not digital, why would it be? Maybe it's something else entirely. Because a square peg doesn't fit in a round hole, how is this proof of a mysterious non-physical receptacle for square pegs?
In the middle ages, the liver was thought to be the seat of conciousness, now of course, we  know better. Or do we? The nervous system is an all pervasive system that encompasses the entire body, not just the brain, some people speculate that memory is contained throughout the body, not just in one location in the brain. But until we have a better understanding of the brain and it's attendant systems, this is just speculation.
Sorry, Bill, but your "numbers" just don't "add up."

Hee hee, happiness, a very subjective feeling, is definitely chemicals sloshing around in my skull, because I am on anti-depressants. If I don't take them, I feel desperate and helpless, I have huge mood swings, the meds help keep me on an even keel, so to speak.

Everything we know, everything we feel, everything we experience, is entirely subjective. We are alone in our thoughts. I can't get inside you, you can't get inside me. We communicate via these abstract symbols called language, with it's imprecision and arbitrary values. We choose to agree that a certain color is "red," and most people agree. Those who are colorblind see it differently. Are they wrong? What's right for me may not be right for everyone else. Does that make me wrong? compared to what?

Umm, are you saying that something exists outside the brain that is mind? If so, show me where! How large would a brain have to be to contain "simple memory", and how do you know this? Or a "mind" for that matter?

Come on, Bill. You are an intelligent, educated and articulate member of this group, whom everyone seems to respect, (including me), but sometimes you go off on these weird tangents, and i just don't get where you're coming from.

Bill,

Whoa! Dude! now you're scaring me!! I'm struck speechless!

I think you are idealizing what we are, we are not noble, not civilized, not 'evolved', and most of us don't hold ourselves to a 'higher standard.'
At best, we humans are just hairless apes that drive cars and wear clothes, with no particular redeeming qualities.
At worst, we are knuckle dragging imbeciles, bent on self destruction and/or world domination over all the other knuckle draggng imbeciles.

Or at least, that's my opinion, but I could be wrong.

Dave

I have to realize, no matter how distatesful it seems to me, that some people do it because they don't have such people in their lives.

Either there is no one there, or those who are there are not so wonderful. I feel sympathy for that small, special group, but then... those guys usually keep it to themselves out of self-respect and dignity...

....Civilization is a thin sheet of seemliness covering the horror of a self-aware mind trapped in an animal's body. Perversions are cracks in that shell which expose the savagery within. Our fears and needs can either be addressed with consideration and respect, or they leap out to devour us, destroying those around us in a gradual but unexorable process. Addictions, obscessions, deviations and psychopathies are all symptoms of a deeper lack, a lack of self-respect based upon a love of Human Dignity which must be taught, and which, in our culture, is being actively and purposely taught against.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / creating a base brain and renaming it questions
« on: April 13, 2007, 08:33:45 pm »
'speed,

Yes, it sounds doable. I have different brains for different characters, you must go into the options panel and select brain, then character, then user, voice, and so on. Else it will just load whatever the last combo you were using.

maybe an option for a future version of HAL? select character/brain combo before loading right from the startup menu?

Sounds great!! Can't wait!!

Question, can it be used for HAL to control hardware via serial or USB port, like motor controllers and whatnot? I'd like to use HAL for a robot platform AI "brain." Sounds like this might fit the bill!

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Another head or 2 or 3
« on: March 26, 2007, 05:59:28 pm »
Hi Bill,
I download a lot of the heads because I've made different brains. Jack made a head of Basil Rathbone for my virtual Sherlock Holmes project. I made a head of me to put on my virtual bot on the internet one of these fine days. Sometimes I'll find a head or skin that's better than the one I'm using. Now if there was a way to do the voices to match.....

Ultra Hal 7.0 / "An appropriate response" plugin?
« on: December 07, 2006, 07:06:51 pm »
Bill et al,

The billboard reference is one of the random responses that Hal uses when he/she doesn't have a response for something. There are three tables of potential words in a format that goes something like:
"I saw/read/etc that farmers/politicians/etc were baking cookies/promoting world peace/washing their cars/etc."
There is a couple hundred phrases I seem to recall, making a lot of potential "nonsense" replies. The purpose of this is to keep the conversation going. I'm not sure how to limit or change the frequency of this, especially if you're trying to stay on a particular topic. the slide control for "learning" may have something to do with it, I've not messed with it much yet.
The tables are in the brain, down near the bottom as I recall.

I found one on Ebay and set it up for Halloween. Left to its own it will sing, dance, and turn its head back and forth. Of course its mouth moves with its spoke words.
When Ultra Hal is plugged in one the head and mouth moves but it gives the appearance that Hal is actually alive and speaking to me instead of just a voice comming from my PC. In time I will adapt to to the robot platform that I already have.

There are some robot heads already available, check out these:
http://www.howtoandroid.com/index.html
http://www.medonis.com/index.html
http://www.cs.uiuc.edu/homes/hmobahi2/aryan/

For more on a whole robot body, see the Leaf project:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/leaf_an_AI_robot/?yguid=171824728
http://members.cox.net/rbirac/

Now, all we need to do is have Hal interact with the outside world (that's the tricky bit).

There's been a lot of discussion about making a four foot tall android(how hard could it be? Answer: Extremely difficult). The problem is towfold, the bigger the bot, the heavier it is, and the higher the power requirements. These go up exponentially. Interfacing a computer with all the motors and sensors and whatnot requires an interface of some sort, Motors require motor controllers, the computer controlls the motors through the interface, inexpensive micro-controllers can be used, but the issues are non-trivial.

However, there is a whole bunch of stuff on the internet already being done. The above links are just the tip of the iceberg.

Good luck!

Speech Technology / voice recognition

I got myself a USB headset, the ANDREA ANC-700 with the Buddy USB adapter, and it works GREAT! I only had to run through the setup once and everything was working. I tried it without the headset (using the laptop built in mic) and it just heard garbage. I am quite pleased with the voice recog ability, makes it much easier to chat with Hal. I think I paid around $70 or $80 for it, but it's well worth the investment.

Forgive me for being a total n00b, but after you drop it into the player, HOW DO YOU SAVE IT? For some reason I can't figure out that part. That and I can't drop anything into the ultrahal window. I'm sure it's something stupid, but I'm hoping you will point me in the right direction.

Great skins, BTW, thanks much for your hard work!

When i make a change (small ones) I save as jpg, minimize photoshop, then drag the skin into the player 9 I just Leave the player on). so yes I have to see the changes as I am making them but its worth it in the end. the layers are the key.Start with layer1 (a nude)then add a blank layer that all my changes are on that way my base isnt messed up. As for possition i am working on a color coded "Layer" that shows to the exact pixel where the parts are.I just use that as an overlay so I can position things right. At times it is timeconsuming but in the end I will have a file that has all the parts ( modifications) that I can open and just mix and mach "layers" for different outfits.Example 1 layer is a shirt, one is boots, one is pants all with the base body in the back.
the detail comes from zooming in to 3-400%.
The items "layers" your not using simply hide them and the dont show up. Then save as jpg.
Thats how I do it anyway.
Hope that helps some. If not I can send you a photoshop file with the layers, to give you a visual idea.
When I finish the color guide ill post it.
Kelly

P.S Love the vids directing is in your blood :)
