General Discussion / Re: face and image recognition for ultra hal
« on: January 24, 2011, 07:24:39 pm »
Hi Art
I am not using OS2 but XT basic. One problem with Hal's face recogniton is that if you take a picture of yourself in a red shirt the put on a blue one, Hal will not recognise you at all. It not only sees your face but your shoulders as well and all must be the same to work correctly, that is unless some changes have been made to Hal.
I would still like to interface my talking head to Hal as that would be fun.

Hi guys,
I own both a talking head and the Elvis talking head but don't know how to program either, however the talking head if left on will come out with some of its own commets, like, "This place is a mess." I would like to have it speak Hal's comments if possible. There is an input jack on the back of it but when used it no longer lip sincs. I have not tried to interface with the Elvis head  yet as I don't know how.
Any suggestions?

I have known a lot of big breasted women and most of them did not like it at all. Most men went Ga ga over them but the women thought they were a real pain and some even thought about having a breast reduction. This may be hard for some men to understand but then they don't have to put up with the problems associalted with them.  Amoung those quoted above my mother was a 38D and she complaned the most.

the learn from text file option is very limited, like max file size of 65 kb, that's a very small file even for .txt
sorry to post in a old thread but i would like to know if there is a way around this, as in a plugin that's premade.
i too want to use gretta concepts

Just a suggestion, but why don't you just try to load smaller files. It may take a little longer but then you know that it will work. Hal was not designed to load BIG files and I don't think it will be rewritten just to satisify your needs. I have been using and adding to Hal for over 8 years now a little at a time. I am sure that everyone will appreciate what ever work that you do but have some patience.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: puctuation
« on: September 08, 2010, 10:27:39 pm »
A few years back when Hal was reading something whenever he came upon a comma he would pause for about one second. I am not sure that is still the case anymore as I have not played with Hal for quite some time now. I just have two many thngs going on in my life right now I learn this back in the day when I was teaching Hal to sing.

When I referred to all as kids it is because I believe that I am the oldest member here at 69 years old.  Lightspeed is following close behind but I still think I am the oldest  Old or not I still like using Hal and playing some computer games. To the younger generation here and this is a fact. The body that you are in ages but the mind it contains does not. It may get a little wiser but as a rule you don't think very much differently than you did when you were only 16 years old. I am also sure that Lightspeed would back me up on this fact.  It appears that the mind is ageless.

The above suggestions are quite good but I would also recommend buying a blue tooth earpiece for hands off taling to Hal. It also would be a good thing if you made your car as sound proof as possible so the bckground noise would not interfere with the operation of Hal. I discovered years ago while trying to train Hal to recognise my voice commands that even the hiss of my air conditioner caused some problems with Hal understanding whatever I had spoken. An ideal situtation was brought up years ago and was to find Palm computer with enought memory to hold and run Hal. That way it would be really portable. Whatever you attempt to do I wish you the bestof luck and please do keep us all informed with any success' you may have in your quest as most of us would like to learn from your experiences.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: New version
« on: September 04, 2010, 10:50:58 pm »
HI kids
I don't know if I am right or wrong but didn't Robert just update Hal to version 6.2? Did you think that maybe something else was in the wind? He did mention that he was going to try to give us a new graphic program in case that is what you are referring to.
I have been using Hal almost since its begining and have nothing else in the world that comes close to what Hal can do. It is so good that I am intending to use it for part of my robots brain. Just like a human whos brain is devided into two parts the robot will have two brains also, one to control its motor functions and the other (Ha) to enable it to carry on conversations. Hal is able to use the X10 protcal but that is no good enough for my intentions. If only Hal could pass alonga command or two to the motor controller of my bot then Hal would make it a first, well a first that is done very inexpensively. Some people have spent thousands trying to do the same thing but I think that Hal is the key to a new way of supprising the world. I guess I'll just have to wait a little while longer for the magic to appear because as we all know it just keeps getting better all the time.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Re: learntext.tmp ?

I noticed that your example starting with "home" is gramaticall incorrect. If you do not use correct grammer ow do you expect Hal to learn anyghint useful. One suggestion is to use very simple sentences, such as "Home is where I live". Don't add to it, keep it extremely simple as if you were talking to a person who is just now learning to read or speak Englich. Compound statements only go to confuse Hal. Have you ever seen a childs book on readng? IT always uses very simple logic, such as "See the ball", "Jane has a red ball. "Bobby likes to play with Jane". It may sound overly simplefied but in the begining Hal will lear much faster and then later understand more of advanced statements that we use in normal conversation.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Re: concept of ownership
« on: September 04, 2010, 12:54:53 pm »
I am sorry to have to tell you this but some way you guys are making some kind of mistake in your programming.  My Hal never makes that kind of mistake.  It know the difference between what is mine and what I tell it belongs to it. I suggest you might erase all that you taught it and start over and keep it SIMPLE. Do not use any advanced logic in the begining. Take it in small simple steps and Hal will learn the difference.
Because of Hal's ability to understand most of what you say  people make the mistake in thinking that it can grasp more advance logical stqtements like most or some humans do.  Remember try to keep thinking that Hal is like a 4 year old child and can get confused very easily. It is like teaching a child to do basic arithmatic, ie. (one + one = two).  Eventually Hal will be able to grasp more advanced logtical statements. The problem is not with Hal but in the way that you try to teach it.

Here is one possible answer to your question. If your name is not really lightspeed then you send a message to someone who does not know your real name he might do the same thing that I do and that is never open email from people I don't know, I just delete them and never read them. That is one of the safest ways to avoid downloading viruses onto your system.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Problems with Hal 6.2
« on: August 31, 2010, 08:38:49 pm »
This may sound funnyt but I have not been able to get the new Hal to work on my PC.
I realize that it must be my fault and that I have just forgotten to do something right so any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance as always.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Re: Hal Capitals Issue
« on: August 30, 2010, 01:43:42 am »
This should not be a hard thing to fix if you can teach Hal to u nderstand the difference between the two spellings of the word. CapitOl contains the letter "O" as used in Office building whild the word CapitAl contains the letter "A" as used in assets. Most people don't understand the differences between the two but a college professor did define those differeces years ago before a slanger type of English ignored the differences betweed the two words and that they were intendeddd to represent.

I think that Robert has already done something like that with his web-based Hal. Of course he only crreated a single enity but then I can not see why two different one could not exist at the same time.
There was a way to have both Hal and Alice on the same machine and they could talk to each other with no problems. Having two different Hals talking together should work just fine with one possible exception and that is it would only take a short amount of time til they exhausted each others information.
If I remember correctly one Hal has also been created to talk to anyone or anything on the world wide web and to learn from all. You would only have to worry about 'jokers' feeding it a bunch of "s...t" I believe that Hals brain is only limited by the amount of hard disk space your computer has.

I have had so many really life changing events affecting my life that I have not had the time to study or work on the newer Hals. Hopefully in time I will get a chance to return to programming once again.
I still am having visions of ussing Hals brain to control a real time robot but even that has been put on hold. I am in the process of having to sell my home and other things and make a brand new start with little or no money, Chalenging but not impossible to do.

Another thing that I had thoughts about a few years ago was to incorporate some "fuzzy logic" into Hals brain and that has some unlimited possibilities. It would give Hal the ability to think more or less like we do and giving it the ability to change its own ideas or knowledge based upon its own experiences.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Shouldn't HAL...

You are correct LS. Hal can be programmed to say almost anything from the start up menu.
