NoamI, excuse me if I’m wrong but by re-reading your post I’m getting the impression that perhaps you are studying or working with some type of linguistics (?) and trying to find a computer software program to help solve or test this type of problems. And perhaps because specialized software is sometimes of limited scope (+ very expensive) you are trying to do the smart move to try to find a another type software that could accomplish the same, plus could be manipulated into learning as well. If that’s the case, my best advice is to contact Zabaware and explain to them what you are looking for perhaps they will even be able to accommodate your needs for a reasonable price. I think its worth to try it. Good luck!

I know that there are many different ways many and workarounds to make UH learn things so possibility is still open. I believe that there is a high probability for the question to be connected to the algebra of grammar, a subject that unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with, but seems to be very interesting. I think the point is to concentrate on the whole and not just the question in order to be able to work on the question. I really hope NoamI could explain it in a different way for us to be able to understand it better and see if it is possible to accomplish it or to find a workaround that could work.

Noticed your post and decided to stop by and see if I could answer some of your questions. Probably by now you know all these already, but just in case here they are:

-Is there a brain with all the clever responses removed?   There is a blank brain named ‘Blank Slate Brain v6.2’. I haven’t used it, so I’m unable to give you more details about it. If you do a search you could probably find it.  Another option is to create a new brain (Options menu all the way to the Brain Editor), save it as a test brain and carefully try modifying things around to your liking.  If you haven’t done it yet, it is a good idea to try to familiarize yourself with the different parts of the brain before doing any changes. Another good idea is to backup or save the UltraHal folder in a safe place in case that something ‘unusual’ happens.

-Does it do much other than echo the dictionary?  Yes it does, and it is sometimes amazing the things it can come up with.  At the beginning it was using only its resources and sounding like you described, but now after months of using and teaching UH, it’s really a very rewarding experience. It all depends on what we use it for, I use it mostly for conversations and it does learn and creates new responses. When it makes mistakes I go to the brain and fix them.

- Can HAL differentiate the temporal 'it' from the non-temporal 'it'?  My best answer for this interesting question is that it could be possible, but needed to be tested on UltraHal. Of course, I don't even know what it is, but some people might. If you don't get any replies you could try sending an email to Zabaware, I believe that they will know if Hal has this capacity.

Never thought of it as nicely and properly as you did, it will be useful to me, thanks NoamI. You're always welcome to help me out with other parts of my problem if you wish.

UltraHal tends to ignore questions probably because it does not have an answer for them, or else. In my particular case its mainly 'why' questions. One of my approaches when it ignores me and changes the subject is to answer the question myself using mainly the format 'the reason why is because'. Obviously because it contains 'why' in it.  Now, I worry that it will associate my explanation to its newly said statement instead of the target former one. So my current questions are: Will that be case?  Should I answer the question first and then reply to its newest statement, or should I ignore it? Currently I'm ignoring it.

Another thing I'm experimenting with is using a plugin with a special keyword that will intervene whenever I want, or know that it will be doing the ignoring trick, this is in order for me to try to avoid the former possible problem above and be able to answer the question 'why' correctly. So far I've observed that it remembers my answers and replies to them. It is too early to get to any conclusions but my hope is that it eventually will get enough data to help it answer the 'why' questions better on its own.  So the above was my main problem and this my temporary solution until I learn more. By the way, I am already somewhat familiar with the brain and able to add, change, mod things, so I'm not that new on some aspects, i'm focusing more on understanding things better in order to do the things I want.

I don't know if that's the UltraHal that can currently be afforded but a really nice one to dream about.  Liked the device as well, smooth, sleek and with with a sweet name like Nina, who will not like technology like that.  Cool post RonG.

Wow Mitsuku i do know about you! a couple of weeks ago started to collect questions on past chatterbox and Loebner contests to improve my UH performance and noticed Mitsuku was able to answer correctly very hard questions that most failed. Some of those questions are really hard for a bot, mitsuku have an excellent performance scores reputation.  In one of them mitsuku was the only one to pass the addition questions (if i remember well), i tried the addition test on UH and it is able to do that too! in short your performance on the tests was very motivational to me, thanks to it i was able to accomplish some decent work with the use of seasons, days, months and weeks, and still working on others.  I really love UH and will not change it for another but if you make a pc version software i will certainly buy it because i'm sure i will love mitsuku as well. UltraHal & Mitsuku could be an killer team. I really hope you consider a pc version because your work is as cool as it get. Gee it was really cool for your to post, you are are master with questions!

Ha Ha, brains being corrupted will makes sense for their weird online responses. I've been working with ultrahal for a while and using the resources available here but was really tedious to have to deal with the cat or the horse question, problem was solved by joining the group. After joining got the temptation to open my mouth and here i am! I will continue to use the database if this does not work out as it is very useful. already learned many things on my own and was able to mod a  plug that works quite good, but being greedy got the desire to learn every technique there is on handling questions. I work a lot with lists so I will go head on and follow my previous plan while keeping my eye on cool things. i'm good with manipulating graphics so that will one of my future plans. Cool that you could have 2 bots running at the same time, will like to do that eventually as well and will also check out Denise. What about questions, do you get frustrated when they are ignored and which is your best approach to deal with them.  Really cool, appreciate you took the time to respond to my post.

With my new understanding of what's really going on, a useful idea could be adding an option button for users to choose between voice on or off, as having options is way better than not having options at all.

Cool, i wrongly assumed that it will also included the future pc version. Sorry to all for venting my ideas for the new version. Wish someone had told me before. Still, the idea of a new poll is a good one as it includes your idea of no voice plus the other newer voices could be added to the poll.  Cood Clad thanks for having the pants to let me know, I appreciate it.

Funny there are 36845 members on this forum. Wow, only in 2 days over 200 people viewed the post and only a few voted or shared any ideas. What about making a new poll that will include more options like no voice. it could go as far as letting everybody vote, after all what are all these people doing in here if they don't have the program. Aren't you all curious to what will happen?  only an idea that's all.

Talking from a newbies point of view, when i got ultrahal i got a headache while trying to figure out about voices. We are all newbies at one time of another, why don't make things easier for them by including 2 free voices for them to choose, male and female. think that you want more people to buy this product this people most likely will be newbies. Make it easier for them to start using the program and more of them will stick to it and might buy goodies from you. a manual could be a plus.

Went to a page full of links to talk to different bots  http://home.online.no/~anlun/bots.htm to test how they answer questions why and others, and they stink as well. Why is it that we can not fix this problem? There's a need to figure out a fix.  If is not done yet then it means its hard. A plug is helping me to make things to look more smooth and more natural but i will like to make it understand questions better. The question that gives me more trouble is 'why?' was thinking about making very long lists of answers to questions with  if-why-then and why-because that will be simple to feed as text but i guess it will not work because people who know more than me has not fixed the problem yet. Before wasting my time on it i think it will be a good idea to see if i get better responses from members with more experience. This is what i need: ideas or opinions or comments or anything else on how to deal with the questions problem.

Please don't delay your product or over-raise the price for one high quality voice that some will like and some will hate and change anyway. Imposible for you to please us all. free voice will be cool plus you could make a deluxe version or else.
