Title: How to change hair colours (ie. yes you can!)
Post by: freddy888 on May 29, 2005, 12:10:03 pm
I don't think anyone has said about this yet, but I had a slight revelation over the hair, after seeing so many people asking about different wigs.

Basically the wigs are treated as objects in just the same way as the bodies.  So if you know how to change body textures then you just apply the same principle to the hair; except refer to the hair as the object being addressed....if you need more help about using commands then there's lot's of help elsewhere for sending commands and using .HAP files.

The Recipe

a) Make up a SEPERATE SKIN for the hair as you would do for a body skin (ie. a 512x512 or 1024x1024 square jpg) in photoshop or whatever.

b) Save your new hair jpg in the folder:C:\Program Files\Haptek\player\data\standard\skins\

c)If you're using the fullBod demo she will most likely be wearing the hair5_9EXP wig, the blonde one.

d)Next you need to apply your hair texture to the 'WIG FIGURE' with this command by using a HAP file or the Console. The command 'paints' your jpeg onto the wig:

\settexture [figure=hair5_9EXP tex=[C:\Program Files\Haptek\player\data\standard\skins\myhair.jpg]]

'myhair.jpg' is the full filename of your new hair texture.

e)your character should now be sporting a new haircolor...

You'll need to do some work on the hair detail just as you would the body if you want it to be convincing.

You will probably have noticed changing the hair colour on a body skin makes no difference, thats because it is under the wig.

Hope that makes sense!!!

Custom hair.    I like it.   Neat idea.

If you rather, put your jpg in your haptek skins folder.

settexture [figure=hair5_9EXP tex= data/standard/skins/newhair.jpg]]

(Don't forget to put backward slash before the word "settexture")

I had my haptek wearing a wig made from a jpg of some lawn grass!

I had a bizzare idea to join a load of hair wigs together and make a grass skirt, but it was getting a bit late in the evening.

btw, Has anyone figured out the settings for limb movements yet?

freddy888,

Think I'm maybe having a "blonde" moment here lol but I just cant get this to work.

ive recoloured the hair on the actaul skin...made a 512x512 texture...copied and pase the hair from the skin...pretty much everything except from what I'm supposed to do lol.

where am I going wrong here?

I worked on the hair and found I couldn't get the texture and quality from jpg that you get from htr.
I did combine the two: like blonde jpg bangs in front of htr ponytail (the htr ponytail sits way back on the head) and this don't look too bad but still don't equal the potential quality of htr alone.
Perhaps those with people-putty might have greater success. I was only able to deal directly with the jpg's.

The grass skirt of hair may be a little more successful.  Mmmmm, perhaps as a peopleputty (head) t-shirt (htr) extended extra long and then placed as an accessory on a fullbody to where it would reach the thighs and could sway freely during a dance of the fullbody. ???

The hair can not be changed in any way with People Putty. I experimented a bit with settexture-command, but her hair didn't get any better. Has anyone made progress with this?

Got to thinking more about the grass skirt but can't do that so I think why not a grass suit and went and got some grass from a photo and put it on Lorraine and she just got all excited.

Anybody want this Lorraine skin in Grass Outfit, here it is:

Hey junglegirl!

In reply to Dr Benway - no further progress. I can get decent looking textures, but the wig is still blocky, with lack of individual strands as in hair5_9EXP.  I too tried a profitless run into settexture land but to no avail.  I think it's got something to do with the alpha settings?!?!?$!"£$"

There (other than the aplha setting) must be a way to do transparency.

I'm glad I'm not a hairdresser!

Just to complicate things:
note : that this forum doesn't allow the use of backslashes, so i have used forwards (/) - you will need to replace these with backslashes - (next to the Z key)

Freddy888,

You mean like:
C:\ProgramFiles\Haptek\player\data\standard\skins\myhair.jpg

Yeah...you're probably right...backspaces and all...<G>

yes - sorry, i corrected it.

i forgot to mention that all that has to be done on the first tuesday of a month, within a 30 Day trial period, south of the equator, after you have activeted the software, registered it, disabled the registration prompt, entered the keycode, emailed support for help, waited three weeks for a reply that they no longer provide support and well before you are offered an upgrade.

I've managed to get a texture onto the hair wig along with the fine details, but can't find a way to get it on the haptek.

Roger, I use the following page to examine alpha-settings.

http://www.haptek.com/tests/RenderMode/index.html

When you have enabled the automatic Haptek-console you can load in your figure instead of the default one.

I think Duskriders grass girl looks really cool.[8D]

Nice grass outfit. Just don't water her, or she will end up like that guy in the first CREEPSHOW movie.

I remember...the first chia-person! Just add water!
Actually that guy was none other than Stephen King!

Yeah, I knew it was Stephen. I wasn't sure if anyone here saw the movie.

It started with a meteor, and he touched it, or something. Then he was all itchy, and decided to get into the bathtub full of water.

BAD mistake. He luckily was able to kill himself with a rifle or shotgun.

Good grief, I didn't think of the dangers.
I went out to tell Lorraine but it was too late.
It was raining and she was all wet.

Personally I think this is an improvement.
I hope you also like it.
I named this one Lorraine10.
Download and enjoy.

Hair not by me.

Lorraine was wearing
hair7_exp_brown.htr

Freddy,
I went over to Blender.Org yesterday and went through the gallery pictures of past couple years.  Impressive.
You may be interested to know the grass for Lorraines outfit came from Blender.

thanks.

Hmm, Blender is really becoming a class act, I was playing around with it a bit a while back and found it was really nice to use, and I managed to get some animations going without too much trouble.  I had  a space ship flying down a canyon being chased by a cop spaceship.  I was prety chuffed with myself.

Some of the things people produce on it are breathtaking, I'll take a look again, thanks for the tip.

By the way, I haven't had much progress on the hair front, but I have managed to change the witch_hair htr and still retain the fine details.  If anyone wants the low-down let me know.

Can you make wigs and export them using People putty?

I seem to be obssessed with wigs at the moment!!

No, Roger, you can't do that with People Putty. We're stuck with the few wigs that already exist. Therefore I am very interested to see if we can create new hair.

This topic is a prime example of our think-tank in action.
I am proud to be a small part.

i agree, this is a fine think-tank.

Blender has been mentioned a couple of times in a few places now, with this is mind I think i saw that one of the tools that Haptek supplies can take 3D objects and convert them to Haptar/Htr objects.

Soo, in theory you could make something using blender and get it into the Haptek engine.

I've downloaded the new version of Blender, so I'm looking forward to another weekend of 3D mayhem and sore eyes!

I'm going to find out the prices on these haptek tools.  Will let you know.

Roger, I wonder if you already took notice of some of the prices that have been mentioned on this forum:

Accessory Converter: $100.00
HapTargh (the compressing program for making .htr & .jhp): $200
Haptek Audio factory: $40

To All,

To make a proper hair texture you might examine the hair model by setting the rendering of the Haptek engine to "line mode".

For this you can use the following .hap-file on an arbitrary Haptek-model:

(http://icon_paperclip.gif) Download Attachment: wireframe.zip ("http://www.zabaware.com/forum/uploaded/dr.benway/200562145857_wireframe.zip")

The beautiful girl in Haptek's Fancy demo has her own texture files that are in .tif-format. The used engine is OpenGL, while our Haptek engine is DirectX. The girl's texture files haven't been encoded. The file with the texture for her hair looks like this:

I meant to say thanks for this the other day, so thanks!

I didn't have this, it's great you put it up because it gives us an idea of the kind of hair detail needed.  I won't go on about it here as I posted my wig changes on the other pages, along with some help on textures.

Does anyone have a mind-numbingly fast graphics card, because I'm wondering if some of my rendering probs might be due to my older graphics card?

The new wig textures have been posted in the file sharing area, any comments or troubles then please let me know.
