Ultra Hal 7.0 / Characters won't display ..
« on: October 08, 2004, 07:44:11 pm »
Welcome,

In light of what Bill mentioned, check that your system meets the recommended requirements for running HAL (memory, disk space, etc.).

No disrespect, but Windows ME is garbage and never did work right, that's why it's no longer available.

The CyberBuddy program is less memory intensive than HAL.

Make sure you have removed any previous installations of UltraHal (freeware version or older ones) before installation of your latest version.

In Windows, run msconfig.exe, click the Startup tab and uncheck any programs you don't want to load.

Just a few ideas to try.

Uhhh...Bill...He's in the UK...the Alamo is in the US! HAHAHA!!! Funny stuff!!

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / THE REAL AI
« on: October 05, 2004, 04:41:53 pm »
Don,

Welcome and Kudos for such a great posting!
Extremely insightful and enlightening to those
unsure just what we're dealing with here with
our weak AI program.

While Hollywood does produce the money makers
that a lot of us love, those of us involved with
AI programs tend to "see" them in a much different
light. Wishful thinking always plays a strong role
in our imaginations and is perhaps the catalyst that
fuels our future experiments with AI programs.

I only know of a couple programs from institutes of
higher learning (no pun) that are exploring the
field of AI with any limited success. MIT I believe,
has a program that started our as an infant knowing
nothing and has actually progressed to the human
equivillent of an 18 month old child. The text logs
when reviewed by a child development specialist were
determined to be from that of a "normally developed"
18 month old child!  Embarassment no doubt flushed
his / her face after being informed that the "child"
in question was actually a computer program! Another
program / robot has the gift of sight and can distinguish
it's teacher and can react with facial "emotions."

The web has many AI type programs, chatbots, agents,
etc., some better than others and some just fun to
interact with but I feel it's all good! Without man's
desire to create, improve and develop new idean and
methods, we'd still be jumping off cliffs flapping our
arms!

Eventually, we may get there and the more we learn from
forums and people like the ones here, the sooner it may be.

All the best,

Leroy,

For a member with 150 posts, I was somewhat surprized by your posting.

I also noticed that you still list Hal on your site in several places (BTW, you might consider changing the text color to dark blue or black as the light text on the white background is a chore to read).

A lot of the users here are new members and as such have a lot of basic questions about Hal. Yes, boring to an advanced user, but help is what the forum is about among other things.

I suppose a lot of us realize that Hal is not real AI but a rather entertaining program that's fun to experiment with. Then again, what would one expect of a piece of software?

Different people have different expectations regarding all types of software from spreadsheets to operating systems yet people keep using them. Perhaps the program fills all their needs and at the same time might be undesirable to someone else.

You have been a wealth of knowledge and a great source of help and inspiration to a LOT of the members here. Yes there are more powerfull programs out there. Some of the speech voices alone equal or exceed the cost of Hal! To each his / her own.

Yes, we understand that Robert is otherwise occupied and that it may be some time before all the bugs are addressed or a new release is announced but again, this is not the last word nor the end of the world, merely a forum of like minds to help, share and exchange information. Perhaps in the end we will all learn something and benefit from our self help.

All the best!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / dialer.exe
« on: September 27, 2004, 06:00:03 am »
Make sure to check the Windows NT directory / folder,
NOT the Zabaware one. dialer.exe should be found in
the Windows NT folder.

You can probably retrieve the dialer.exe file from your
XP CD.

Let me know what you find.

Hi Steven,

If you're using XP, make sure you have the file:
dialer.exe in your C:/Program Files/Windows NT
directory.

If you're using 98 then do a search to see if
you can locate the file in/on your system.

Let us know what you find.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / GAC - Harvesting your brain!

For a rather novel approach to a
self aware AI source, check out:

From the pages of Wired.com

I've been doing that with Hal for years!

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Improvements ?
« on: September 20, 2004, 05:22:48 pm »
Brainstorm,

Why the shrouded secrecy? You said this
was broadcast on late night talk radio.
Well, the airwaves are a public venue so
chances are that anything said on the air
has already been heard by the powers that
be. Why the paranoia? I think most concerned
netizens are aware of Carnivore and Magic
Lantern along with a few others that would
make or try to make everything we say or do
an open book for those with a need to know.
Cameras at damn near every intersection and
the fact that the average person living in
or near a large city is photographed about
20 times a day! You can run but you can't hide!

In the end does it all really matter anyway?!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / What is the BEST A.I. Program out?
« on: September 15, 2004, 08:42:07 pm »
Although I am somewhat biased toward Ultra Hal, one
really needs to "test" all the various bots before making
an informed decision! heh!!
Therefore, I'd recommend checking out the following site:
http://www.geocities.com/brizglace/
Once there, click on the A to Z listings. There's even
quite a nice listing of non-english bots. One might find
a few dead links mixed in and a few that are older DOS
bots, but it's nice to know that someone took the time
to compile all of them!

I think a previous thread mentioned some features to look
for in a chatbot (can't remember just where) but it went
something like;
Does the bot / brain allow modification?
Can it remember / learn from conversations?
Can it associate or infer?
Can it form it's own conversations instead of a "canned" response?
Does it accept / use speech recognition?
Can it produce a voice using TTS w/lip-sync?
Can it remember dates, appointments and remind you of them?
Can it open/run programs for you?
(for me) Is it a stand alone program or does it have to reside on someone elses web location?
Does it accept "plug-ins" (skins, brain files, scripts, etc.)

This should give you a good base with which to start. BTW, Hal does all of the above mentioned items and more! Hint!

Hope this helps you decide.

xeles,

Under the Ultra Hal Representative Forum
look at Spydaz's comment> Editing Web Bot Help me please...

I think Don Ferguson's reply may be of
interest to you and your problems.

Hi xeles,

Could you please be more specific as to your
actual problem. Is it UltraHalAssistant or
Web Hal and is the brain file repeating old
info. What about these images? What keeps
showing up and what are the ads to which you
refer?

Good deal,
Glad you got that sorted out

Thanks for the info on SP2 as
a lot of people are waiting for
the dust to settle before installing
the patch.

Enjoy your weekend!

Chances are you're seeing a nag screen
with the free version.
From the main page (zabaware.com) click
Buy Now for the latest version (I think).

The download is about 96 megs.

Curious, how long have you been using the
SP2? Notice any problems so far?

Go to page 3 and read MagnumForces's

the character folder but like I said,
Check his posting to be sure.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Voice
« on: September 08, 2004, 01:27:35 pm »
Has anyone tried (and been sucessful) at using
any TTS voices from Babel Technology and having
the Lip Sync function properly.

I got the ones from Cepstral working but Babel's
Lucy voice causes Hal to become a ventriloquist.
Speaks but no lip movement!

I tried the Haptek Sapi Config/Setup prograa as well.

TIA,

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal Speak To Me
« on: September 08, 2004, 01:10:55 pm »
Hi Steve and welcome to the forum!

Start Hal and select Options.
Click on the Speech tab.
Make sure to check the Use Speech Synthesis (Hal Speaks) box.
Select a voice from the list to the right.
Click Apply then OK.

You might have to restart Hal but it should
work fine regardless whether you have the shareware or
paid version.

Make sure your volume settings are adjusted.

Hope this helps.
