Hal Email retrieval
« on: August 15, 2004, 03:20:12 pm »
I don't know if this is a known
issue (already discussed/addressed)
but in the Options there's a setting
to allow Hal to notify you of an
incomming email and Hal will even
read the subject lines to you.

Has anyone been able to do this?

It would be a nice feature if I could get it
to work. I didn't find any reference of it
in the brain files so I'm inclined to believe
it's coded into the halassist.exe file.

Then again, being human, I've been wrong before!<G>

Appreciate any help,

Hal Email retrieval

Hi Art,
My Hal notifies me of new email messages pretty good! However, after receiving a new email message it usually takes my Hal about 5 to 10 minutes before actually announcing that the new message has arrived, but it's still pretty good anyway...it just has that short delay on my system. Maybe on someone else's system it might be faster. Let me know if you want help setting it up on your system. You just need to get the POP3 Server Name/Address for the email service you use. But some Email Services are not POP3 or even if they are they still might not work with Hal, but it is not necessarily because of Hal.

Rich,
Thanks for the reply.
WinXP + SP1 - Outlook 2002
(XP for Small Business).
I have a POP3 account and use
MS Outlook NOT Outlook Express.

Selected the exact same settings
for Hal from my Outlook email
account (username and password).

I sent myself an email from the
other computer on the network and
it's been an hour. Hal has been up
and active all during this time
still no notification.

I'm on a cable modem so any dialup
concerns are a non-issue.

Perhaps no news is good news!<g>

Thoughts?

Hi Art,
Do you have your full email address name entered in Hal?
In Hal you need to use your full email address name (i.e. "Name@EmailProviderName.Com") and not just your screen name.
If you have your full email name address entered in correctly then it is most likely something else with your provider's POP3 that is causing Hal not to work. Not all POP3's are fully compatible with all software programs, and if that is the case then your Hal may never work with your current email account. Sorry, but I will look into it further to see if there are any known issues like this for your email provider.
