I have been running Vista for a while.
There are a lot of differences, but once you get used to it, it is nice.

I would never go back.

Eventually Microsoft will stop supporting XP, and everyone will have to switch. I remember when everyone was mad that they had to switch to XP.

Things have been going downhill since pcdos was defeated by msdos.
See you here, there, or in the Air!

Windows7 should be out next summer.
News is there may be a demo before Christmas this year and you can upgrade the demo next summer.
Will be similiar to vista except double the power (64 bit instead of 32) [:)]

I'm running 64 bit vista home premium. I like it ok but wasn't easy getting used to. It is not as intuitive as xp, but it runs faster and I can upgrade from 3 gigs of ram to 8 or more if I wanted to.
Good luck to you.[:D][:D][:D]

My son finally changed his PC. He is a big gamer and the graphics card had overheated too much (during a lot of years, lol). Now, he doesn't miss XP.[8D]

I hope my post is readable, Mark, I am under W98. Sorry, now I must leave and go down to MS-DOS. I like my Epic Pinball so much.[:D][:D][:D]

Ted, how does 64 bit compare to 32 bit? Is it faster?[?][?]

I did not want to shell out a lot of money, my new PC was about $400, and it did not come with speakers or a monitor, but I already had a 19inch monitor and subwoofer speaker system. It's an AMD processor. 2.7 Ghz. (My old Dell was only 1.6 Ghz)

I guess I have a 64 as well, It's pretty fast for about 2 0r 3 months until it gets all the crap on it that slows most computers down. I wouldn't go back to anything but Dell though, great bedside service if something goes wrong. Just run defrag and spyware programs as well as anti-virus programs often. Especially the defrag if you have a large hard drive.

IMO personas need to do research, the multi core proccessors will help with complex programs like rendering graphics,, IMO it does not = "power" and their are other things like memory speed like 1066 and 1333MHZ and the system bus. More memory = less pagefile/virtual memory so it is "faster" but ......aarrg!

this link is a little old and could clarify some xp questions and how imporntant it is.. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-9968449-56.html?hhTest

IMO it comes down to people being able to afford the newer systems. (building your own is cheaper, but you have RMA'S instead of customer service)

maybe I am wrong in understanding the issue...[?]

One advantage of 64 bit is less viruses ....

P.S.
XP has a 64 bit version and vista comes in both 64 and 32 bit

Yeah, I mean if I had a use for 64 bit, I'd want to have it. I know it's the future of all, because 16 bit was the norm, I think.

My take on Vista:

1. It's not necessary.

2. It's different. That's what makes it exciting

3. It's missing Pinball, but you can download it off of the internet

4. It has some annoyances, in the name of security.

I am now copying files to a new external HD, from XP, so I can copy it over to Vista, so all my files will be organized in place I am familiar with.

That way, it can be like my old computer, but Vista.

It will take many hours to copy my files from my XP machine, because it's USB 1.1.

But at least my new computer is 2.0, so copying to my new computer will be faster.

Hi Mark, sorry to be absent when asked a question. I'm out on the west coast visiting family and friends. I'll be back home before next week. I see most questions have already been answered already. One thing about 64 bit is that you can add a lot more ram if you need it. Another thing I've been told is that it is easier to find drivers for old software for 64 bit. One issue is that some servers are not very vista compatible and people putty has no plans to become more vista friendly although for the most part works quite well. Permissions for another user and shareing are something I havn't got down pat yet but have found work arounds.[:)][:)][:)]
